IPF - Celtic princely seat / Keltischer Fürstensitz
Intro
In this article we will take a journey into the distant past. A very unusual mountain can be seen from afar, the Ipf, a Celtic princely residence from the Bronze Age around 1000 BC. Ch. The journey took place via Donauwörth and Harburg in the direction of Nördlingen. Mount Ipf is located near the town of Bopfingen in Baden Wuerttemberg, right on the border with Bavaria. I will report in detail about the special geography of this area in the future.
In diesem Artikel werden wir eine Reise in die weite Vergangenheit unternehmen. Schon von weitem ist ein sehr ungewöhnlicher Berg zu erkennen, der Ipf, ein keltischer Fürstensitz der Broncezeit um 1000 v. Ch. Die Anreise erfolgte über Donauwörth und Harburg in Richtung Nördlingen. Der Berg Ipf liegt in der Nähe der Stadt Bopfingen in Baden Wüttemberg, also direkt an der Grenze zu Bayern. Über die besondere Geographie dieser Gegend werde ich noch ausführlich berichten.
Alerheim Castle / Schloß Alerheim
Again and again such hilltop villages appear, which are surrounded by a protective wall, often house a castle or manor houses and are surrounded by a few houses.
Immer wieder tauchen solche Hügeldörfer auf, die von einem Schutzwall umgeben sind, oft ein Schloß oder Gutsherrenhäuser beherbergen und von einigen Häusern umgeben sind.
Goldberg und Langenberg
After Nördlingen, a group of mountains appear that also have a rich history. There are information boards with detailed explanations at the car parks. Marked hiking trails lead past the prominent places and faster than you can imagine you are immersed in the time of the Celts from 3000 years ago. The long history of the settlement of the Goldberg can then be explored in the nearby museum in Goldburghausen.
Nach Nördlingen taucht dann eine Gruppe von Bergen auf die ebenfalls eine reiche Geschichte in sich tragen. An den Parkplätzen stehen Informationstafeln mit ausführlichen Erklärungen. Markierte Wanderwege führen an den markanten Stellen vorbei und schneller als man sich versieht taucht man ein in die Zeit der Kelten von vor 3000 Jahren. Die lange Geschichte der Besiedelung des Goldberges kann dann im nahen Museum in Goldburghausen erforscht werden.
To the west you can see the entire crater here, we see 30 km to the rim of the crater.
In Richtung Westen kann man hier den gesamten Krater überblicken, wir sehen hier 30 km bis zum Kraterrand.
Museum Bopfingen
Because of the great heat of the day, I drove to the museum in Bobfingen before climbing the mountain. Finds and historical details of the excavations are exhibited there and are definitely worth a visit. The building alone is a feast for the eyes and the square in front of the museum also invites you to take a breather.
Aufgrund der goßen Hitze das Tages fuhr ich vor der Bergbesteigung noch ins Museum in Bobfingen. Dort sind Fundstücke und geschichtliche Details der Ausgrabungen ausgestellt und einen Besuch auf jeden Fall wert. Schon allein das Gebäude ist eine Augenweide und auch der Platz vor dem Museum läd zu einer Verschnaufpause ein.

Celtic world on the Ipf / Keltenwelt am Ipf
At the foot of the Ipf there is a large car park (no fees!) and the entire area can also be visited without admission. During excavations in the vicinity, some buildings were found and reconstructed and built here as an open-air facility by an association and the country. The size of the buildings surprised me a bit. All construction phases can be seen. It wasn't about erecting habitable houses here, but about researching and reviving long-forgotten technologies. Some are even picked up again today by some builders - natural building is in vogue.
Am Fuße des Ipf ist ein großer Parkplatz (ohne Gebühren!) und auch das gesamte Areal ist ohne Eintritt zu besichtigen. Bei Ausgrabungen in der Nähe wurden einige Gebäude festgestellt und durch einen Verein und das Land hier als Freilichtanlage rekonstruiert und aufgebaut. Die Größe der Gebäude hat mich dann doch etwas überrascht. Alle Bauphasen sind zu erkennen. Es ging ja nicht darum hier bewohnbare Häuser aufzustellen, sondern um Forschung und Wiederbelebung längst vergessener Techniken. Einige werden sogar heute wieder von manchen Bauherren aufgegriffen - natürliches Bauen ist im Trend.
Fences and ramparts / Zäune und Wälle
The reconstructions of the ramparts are particularly interesting. In the upper part of the mountain there is not much to see anymore because much of it has been weathered and removed by visitors and the long time. Here, at the foot, however, you can take a very close look at it and all phases of the construction are also well explained and visible here.
Besonders interessant sind die Rekonstruktionen der Wälle. Im oberen Bereich des Berges ist davon nicht mehr viel zu sehen da viel durch Besucher und die lange Zeit verwittert und abgetragen wurde. Hier, am Fuße allerdings kann man sich das ganz genau ansehen und auch hier sind alle Phasen der Konstruktion gut erklärt und sichtbar.
All in all, a very successful excursion so far, which will be continued in the next part with the ascent of the Ipf.
Alles in allem bisher ein sehr gelungener Ausflug, der im nächsten Teil mit der Besteigung des Ipf fortgesetzt wird.
