The Battersea Power Station

In today's walk I will take you with me to a place that I am also visiting for the first time. So this will be a new experience for both of us. Spoiler alert, it was a really nice walk and I have enjoyed it a lot.

Already on the list of places that I will revisit, even not being as close as some of my other favourite places.

But first and before sharing some photos of the place. Let's all learn a little bit more about the history of the building, because there is a lot to know and that's why it is such an iconic area and place in London.

The Battersea Power Station is a famous and iconic landmark located on the south bank of the River Thames in London, England. Its history spans over a century and is closely tied to the growth and development of the city.

Here is a chronological overview of the Battersea Power Station's history:

Construction and Early Years (1929-1939):

The construction of Battersea Power Station began in 1929 and was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, a prominent architect known for his work on iconic structures like the red telephone box and Liverpool Cathedral.
The power station was built to meet the increasing electricity demands of London. It consisted of two identical coal-fired power stations, known as Battersea A and Battersea B, each with a distinctive chimney.
Battersea A was completed in 1933, followed by Battersea B in 1939. Together, they formed one of the largest brick buildings in the world, with a prominent Art Deco design.

Role in World War II (1939-1945):

During World War II, Battersea Power Station played a vital role in the war effort. Its tall chimneys were used as navigational landmarks by the German Luftwaffe, and as a result, the power station was protected from enemy bombings.
The power station continued to supply electricity to London throughout the war, helping to keep the city functioning.

Post-war Years and Decline (1945-1983):

After the war, Battersea Power Station continued to provide electricity to London for several decades. However, by the 1970s, the station's outdated coal-fired technology and the increasing costs of operation made it less economically viable.
In 1975, Battersea A power station was decommissioned, followed by Battersea B in 1983. The closure marked the end of the station's role as a functioning power generator.

Inside Battersea Power Station

But that's not the end of the history of this place. It is still going stronger and nowadays it is the house for a huge shopping centre in an area that is still growing and evolving.

But let's learn about it.

Cultural Icon and Redevelopment (1983-present):

Following its closure, Battersea Power Station faced a period of neglect and deterioration. However, its unique architectural design and iconic status made it a popular backdrop for films, music videos, and cultural events.
Over the years, there were various proposals and plans for the redevelopment of the power station site. However, progress was slow, and the building remained largely vacant.
In 2012, the Battersea Power Station Development Company acquired the site and initiated a major redevelopment project. The plans involved transforming the power station and its surrounding area into a vibrant mixed-use development, including residential, commercial, and leisure spaces.
The restoration and redevelopment of Battersea Power Station began in 2013, with a focus on preserving the station's historic façade and iconic chimneys while creating modern interior spaces.
The project has been ongoing, and as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the Battersea Power Station development is still underway, with residential apartments, office spaces, shops, restaurants, and cultural venues being constructed. The project aims to revitalize the area and create a new destination within London.

The Surrounding area

When you go to visit the area, get prepared to see how beautiful and amazing it looks the surroundings. All the new architecture that is still developing and growing looks beautiful.

There are a lot of choices of restaurants, coffee shops and bars around, what makes this area also a very attractive area for Londoners, specially in days when the sun is out, with many outside sitting areas.

Next time I will visit the area with a little bit more time and for sure will make sure to spend some of that time just sitting outside and enjoying the atmosphere of the area.
