Family visit to the Philippines is a time to travel together, either locally or abroad which is our form of bonding. We have heard a lot about the beautiful lakes of Coron Island so Coron here we come!
Coron Island is the site of a scrapped Nickelodeon plan to build an underwater theme park. The conservation groups opposed the project and launched an online petition, as this will destroy the world-famous marine ecosystem. Coron island is listed in the natural category of the UNESCO world heritage tentative list. Impressive!
How We Got There
From Manila we took a one-hour flight to Busuanga Airport (the airport in Coron, Palawan) From the airport we rented 2 vans that took us to the hotel where we stayed for 3 days and 2 nights.
This is Asia Grand View Hotel. We chose this because of its proximity to the town proper and where the boats for the tour are moored, the free breakfast buffet (Yey!). Last but not the least, the magnificent views!
Solitude at night, getting good sleep for tomorrow’s activities.
The Island Hopping Tour
For the island hopping, we chartered a motorized outrigger big enough for a party of 18. As per the captain’s suggestion, he accompanied us to the market to buy the meat and seafood and grilled them for us for a fee.
Our first stop is Banul beach where the foods were grilled for our lunch. Seafood galore!
Banul Beach is a stretch of white sand and crystal clear waters, with greeneries and beautiful, dark-colored karst formations. While there are no standard tourist amenities, the kids, oh they had fun playing in the powdery sand and clear waters. Kayaking and climbed up and went around the limestone cliffs for us adults.
Twin Lagoon
The Twin Lagoon is a pair of dazzling blue lagoons set between a backdrop of vertical, dark-colored, jagged limestone walls on Coron Island.
The dividing rocks also create two entrances to the lagoons, and the boat will be docked on one side. To go between the lagoons, you have to go into the water and then climb over a wooden staircase built over the rocks or swim under the natural archway that was formed in the rock. If it’s high tide, this connecting archway is completely submerged. When it’s completely submerged, you can swim underwater for a few meters to reach the other side. This wasn’t for us so we climb the stairs instead. We swam for about 20 minutes, cannot stay long as we have to move on to the next lake.
Kayangan Lake
Kayangan Lake for us, is the most popular spot on Coron Island. It is said to be the cleanest lake in the Philippines. To get there we took a hike up the stairs (about 300 steps) to the viewpoint. From up there, we see the crystal clear water, jagged but beautiful limestone cliffs, and Coron Bay. Then went down to the other side to reach the lake.
The lake has crystal clear water, incredible underwater rock formations, and very relaxing greenery in the surroundings. We truly, unabashedly, enjoyed the swim!
Will we come to Coron again? Well, two of my nieces have! As for the rest of us, only time will tell but we'll keep our fingers crossed.
