I've always thought that if you like to travel, you don't necessarily have to go far to see incredible places, just keep your thirst for adventure alive and they will appear everywhere to surprise you. At the end of October, my sister and I signed up to go on a hike to a place that although we knew the name, we had never visited, El Pao de Zárate. The participants met at 6:00 am in Soco, in the center of La Victoria, Aragua state, and from there buses took us to the Patalante climb in the Guacamaya sector, where the 13 km route began.
Siempre he pensado que si te gusta viajar, no necesariamente tienes que irte lejos para conocer lugares increíbles, basta con que tu sed de aventura se mantenga latente y ellos aparecerán en cualquier parte para sorprenderte. A finales de octubre, mi hermana y yo nos anotamos para ir a una caminata hacia un lugar que aunque conocíamos de nombre, jamás habíamos visitado, El Pao de Zárate. Los participantes nos encontramos a las 6:00 am en Soco, centro de La Victoria, estado Aragua y desde allí unos autobuses nos llevaron hasta la subida Patalante del sector Guacamaya, donde comenzaba la ruta de 13 Km.
The scheduled departure time was 7:00 am, but we started about 10 minutes later because the organizers of the activity were waiting for some logistics people.
La hora pautada para salir era 7:00 am, pero comenzamos unos 10 minutos después porque los organizadores de la actividad estaban esperando a unas personas de la logística.
The weather felt cool at that time, I estimate that there were more than 100 participants in total.

We had barely walked a few meters when the beautiful mountain scenery began to delight us.

On the sides of this road there is a lot of vegetation, tall trees and also bamboo, thanks to them and the mountains we had shade during most of the route.

When we had been walking for about an hour, we came across a hydration point on the road, where they handed out fruit and water to those who passed by. I had brought my water, as usual, but no fruit, so I grabbed it. It is vital to hydrate well in this type of activity, especially with the high temperatures that have hit Venezuela in recent months.
Cuando teníamos como una hora caminando, nos topamos con un punto de hidratación en la vía, allí repartieron frutas y agua a los que pasábamos. Yo había llevado mi agua, como siempre, pero frutas no, así que agarré. After that, the mountains continued to captivate me. In every excursion I have made to remote places in Aragua state, the mountains always stand out.

The wildflowers also made me stop along the way.

Around here there are both small plots of land and farms, according to what we were told, what is most produced in these lands is corn, tomatoes, eggplants, caribbean peppers, and as for animal husbandry, what I saw were cows and chickens, but there are also pigs.

At 9:30 I reached the finish line, so I did this 13 km in a couple of hours. I sat down to rest and eat a sandwich I had brought while waiting for my sister and a friend to arrive as well.

I went to the back of the parador, and look at the structure of the bridge, I loved that big circle where the water passes through.

My sister and I went down from the other side of the bridge, where there is no deep pool, to relax for a while by the river and take pictures. It looks like an enchanted forest, I was fascinated with this place, as I hadn't brought change of clothes and the water was very cold, I didn't bathe.

When I later did some research on the history of this sector of the Ribas municipality, I found that before the arrival of the Spanish colonization, this area, as well as others nearby, were populated by indigenous people. Then this was part of a hacienda, and one of the owners was named Zárate, so the place was named after him, they said "Zárate, from El Pao", and eventually it became Pao de Zárate.
Cuando luego investigué un poco sobre la historia de este sector del municipio Ribas, encontré que antes de la llegada de la colonización española, esta zona, así como otras cercanas, estaban pobladas por indígenas. Luego esto fue parte de una hacienda, y uno de los propietarios que tuvo era de apellido Zárate, entonces el lugar fue nombrado así por él, decían “Zárate, el de El Pao”, y con el tiempo quedó como Pao de Zárate.
Other interesting information I found was that the famous European travelers and naturalists Humboldt and Bonpland passed through here. In the book Humboldt and Bonpland in Venezuela, by Jesús Tortoza Acevedo, this area of Aragua is mentioned and it is detailed that on the recommendation of the matron of the house where they stayed in Villa de Cura (another town in Aragua state), they went to visit El Pao de Zárate in March 1800, and in their writings it is recorded how impressed they were by the beauty of the place.
Otros datos interesantes que encontré fue que por aquí pasaron los famosos viajeros y naturalistas europeos Humboldt y Bonpland. En el libro Humboldt y Bonpland en Venezuela, de Jesús Tortoza Acevedo, se menciona esta zona aragüeña y se detalla que por recomendación de la matrona de la casa donde se hospedaron en Villa de Cura (otro pueblo del estado Aragua), ellos fueron a visitar El Pao de Zárate en marzo del año 1800, y en sus escritos quedó registrado lo impresionados que quedaron por la belleza del lugar.
The Montilla brothers, Mariano and Tomás, heroes of Venezuela's independence, also lived in this area.
En esta zona también vivieron los hermanos Montilla, Mariano y Tomás, héroes de la independencia de Venezuela.
Although this time we didn't get to the center of El Pao de Zárate, which is a little further on, this little part that I got to know left me wanting more, it has so many places to explore. We were told that there are many natural attractions here, such as rivers, pools, mountains, small waterfalls and even some quartz caves. I definitely want to come back!
Aunque en esta ocasión no llegamos al centro de El Pao de Zárate, que se encuentra un poco más allá, esta pequeña parte que conocí me dejó con ganas de más, tiene tantos lugares para explorar. Nos contaron que hay muchas atracciones naturales por aquí, como ríos, pozas, montañas, pequeñas cascadas y hasta unas cuevas de cuarzo. ¡Sin duda quiero volver!
