Seeing animals in their natural habitat is one of the things that interest me the most when I travel, nature is always a priority for me, and in this part of the world there are many options to enjoy it, so on our second day in Ushuaia, we went sailing to meet some of the local fauna.
Ver animales en su hábitat natural es una de las cosas que más me interesan cuando viajo, la naturaleza siempre es prioridad para mí, y en esta parte del mundo hay muchísimas opciones para disfrutarla, así que en nuestro segundo día en Ushuaia, nos fuimos a navegar para encontrarnos de cerca con algunas especies de la fauna local.
As there were many agencies offering the tours, the prices were affordable, so we decided on a package from the Tres Marías company that included three destinations: Sea Lion Island, Birds Island and H Island, with a duration of approximately 4 hours.
Como había muchas agencias que ofrecían los paseos, los precios eran asequibles, así que nos decidimos por un paquete de la empresa Tres Marías que incluía tres destinos: Isla de los Lobos, Isla de los Pájaros e Isla H, con una duración de aproximadamente 4 horas.
My mom and I arrived early at the pier, about 8:30 am, and while waiting for the stipulated time to leave, which was at 9:30, we walked a bit along the tourist pier. From there there are fabulous views of the city and besides, the day was perfect, with a radiant blue sky.
Mi mamá y yo llegamos temprano al muelle, como a las 8:30 am, y mientras esperábamos la hora estipulada para salir, que era a las 9:30, caminamos un poco por el muelle turístico. Desde allí hay unas vistas fabulosas de la ciudad y además el día estaba perfecto, con un cielo azul radiante.
It was time to sail and we got on the boat, it was a sailboat called IF, for a maximum of 10 passengers. As we left the coast behind, beautiful landscapes of the sea and snow-capped mountains appeared before us.
Llegó la hora de navegar y nos montamos en la embarcación, era un velero llamado IF, para máximo 10 pasajeros. Al ir dejando la costa atrás, aparecieron ante nosotros unos paisajes bellísimos del mar y las montañas nevadas.
We traveled through the wide bay to reach the Beagle Channel, a maritime passage that joins the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and has an extension of 240 km. Its eastern part is shared by Argentina and Chile, and its name is due to a British ship that between 1826 and 1830, made hydrographic studies in this part of South America. The Yámanas, primitive inhabitants of these coasts, called it Onashaga Channel, which means "hunters channel".
Recorrimos la amplia bahía para llegar al Canal Beagle, un paso marítimo que une al océano Atlántico con el Pacífico y que tiene una extensión de 240 km. Su zona oriental la comparten Argentina y Chile, y su nombre se debe a un buque británico que entre los años 1826 y 1830, hizo estudios hidrográficos en esta parte de América del Sur. Los yámanas, habitantes primitivos de estas costas, lo llamaban canal Onashaga, que significa “canal de cazadores”.
Although we had a sunny day, it was quite cold, apart from several sweaters, I wore my gloves and sunglasses so that my eyeballs wouldn't freeze 😂 it's a horrible feeling...
Aunque nos tocó un día soleado, hacía bastante frío, aparte de varios suéters, me puse mis guantes y mis lentes de sol para que no se me congelaran los globos oculares 😂, es una sensación horrible...
The first place where we stopped was the Birds Island, a small rocky area where several colonies of birds live.
El primer lugar donde nos detuvimos fue la Isla de los Pájaros, una pequeña superficie rocosa en donde hacen vida varias colonias de aves.
The sailboat was approaching little by little, thanks to its soundproof engine so as not to disturb the animals, they are not frightened. That is also the reason why these boats carry few passengers, if there are too many people on board, the noise can affect the wildlife.
El velero se fue acercando poco a poco, gracias a que cuenta con un motor insonorizado para no molestar a los animales, ellos no se asustan. Esa es también la razón por la que estos barcos llevan pocos pasajeros, si hay demasiada gente a bordo, el ruido puede afectar a la fauna.
When we got much closer to this island, we saw more than just birds, there were also sea lions! We were going to meet them later, but they showed up at once. I'm always too excited to see animals in their natural habitat, free and happy ❤️.
Cuando llegamos mucho más cerca de esta isla, vimos algo más que pájaros, ¡había también lobos marinos! Los íbamos a conocer más adelante, pero ellos aparecieron de una vez. Siempre me emociona demasiado ver a los animales en su hábitat natural, libres y felices ❤️.
We skirted the island and had the opportunity to see many birds, the ones that stand out the most are the imperial cormorants (Leucocarbo atriceps), and it is because from afar they look like penguins.
Bordeamos la isla y tuvimos la oportunidad de ver muchas aves, las que más destacan son los cormoranes imperiales (Leucocarbo atriceps), y es que desde lejos parecen pingüinos.
The guide was pointing out the different species perched on the rocks or flying around us, such as black-browed albatrosses, flying steamer-duck, upland goose and several types of gulls: southern, gray and kelp gulls.
El guía nos iba señalando las distintas especies posadas en las rocas o que volaban a nuestro alrededor, como los albatros de ceja negra, los patos vapor del Pacífico, cauquenes y varios tipos de gaviotas: australes, grises y cocineras.
Then we continued sailing to go to the Island of the Sea Lions, which is also a rocky surface, where there were large numbers of these marine mammals.
Luego seguimos navegando para ir a la Isla de los Lobos, que también es una superficie rocosa, allí había gran cantidad de estos mamíferos marinos.
I was delighted to meet them and I didn't stop taking pictures of them, even though the sailboat came very close to the island, they were super quiet sleeping or sunbathing, they didn't even pay attention to us.
Yo estaba encantada de conocerlos y no paré de tomarles fotos, a pesar de que el velero se acercó bastante a la isla, ellos estaban súper tranquilos durmiendo o tomando sol, ni nos prestaron atención.
In some parts of the tour here, there was a strong smell in the air, like decomposed fish, it's from the feces and urine of these cute animals hahaha.
En algunas partes del recorrido por aquí, había un fuerte olor en el ambiente, como de pescado descompuesto, es de las heces y orina de estos lindos animales jajaja.

Two types of sea lions can be observed here: single fur sea lions (Otaria flavescens) and double fur sea lions (Arctophoca australis). The former are known as such because they have only one coat of fur and it is light in color, while the others have double fur and it is dark. Other differences are that single-furred sea lions can reach up to 2.5 meters in length and weigh 350 kg, while double-furred sea lions are smaller, measuring up to 1.60 meters in length and weighing about 70 kg.
Aquí se pueden observar dos tipos de lobos marinos: lobos de un pelo (Otaria flavescens) y lobos de dos pelos (Arctophoca australis). Los primeros son conocidos así porque tienen sólo una capa de pelo y es de color claro, mientras que los otros tienen doble pelaje y es oscuro. Otras diferencias son que los lobos de un pelo pueden alcanzar a medir hasta 2 metros y medio y a pesar 350 kg y los de dos pelos son más pequeños, llegan a medir 1.60 metros y unos 70 kg.
As this is a marine reserve, it is not allowed to get off the boat or swim, however the water is freezing cold.
Como esta es una reserva marina, no está permitido bajar de la embarcación ni nadar, de todos modos el agua es helada.
We said goodbye to the sea lions and headed to the last point of this sea excursion, H Island.
Nos despedimos de los lobos marinos y nos dirigimos al último punto de esta excursión marítima, la Isla H.
A while later we saw a piece of land with some elevations and we had arrived, here we would finally go down for a hike. H Island is the southernmost island of Argentina.
Un rato después vimos un pedazo de tierra con algunas elevaciones y habíamos llegado, aquí por fin bajaríamos para hacer una caminata. La Isla H es la isla más al sur de Argentina.
I love hiking, I was very excited and although it was a short hike, about an hour, I found the place spectacular. This island is also a guarded nature reserve and there is fauna, flora, lichens and remains of indigenous settlements.
Amo el senderismo, estaba muy emocionada y aunque era una caminata corta, como de una hora, el lugar me pareció espectacular. Esta isla también es una reserva natural custodiada y en ella hay fauna, flora, líquenes y restos de asentamientos indígenas.
My mom also enjoys nature walks and was impressed with the scenery around us.
Mi mamá también disfruta las caminatas en la naturaleza y estaba impresionada con el paisaje que nos rodeaba.
The guide explained to us that on this H-shaped island, about 1,100 m long and 500 m wide, the Yámanas, indigenous people who inhabited this region for thousands of years, had their shelters and hunted. You can still see traces of that human activity, such as the remains of their meals, shells, sea lion bones, among other things.
El guía nos explicó que en esta isla con forma de H, de unos 1.100 m de largo y 500 de ancho, los yámanas, indígenas que habitaron esta región durante miles de años, tenían sus refugios y cazaban. Aún se pueden ver las huellas de esa actividad humana, como los restos de sus comidas, conchas, huesos de lobos marinos, entre otras cosas.
We walk uphill to continue seeing the unparalleled geography of this place and its breathtaking views, without a doubt the end of the world is mind-blowing!
Caminamos en ascenso para seguir viendo la inigualable geografía de este lugar y sus impresionantes vistas, ¡sin duda el fin del mundo es alucinante!

It was time to return to the city of Ushuaia, as we were sailing, we were served some delicious triple alfajores (a kind of cookie filled with caramel spread and covered with chocolate) accompanied by hot tea, and as I savored this, I took a few more pictures.
Ya era hora de regresar a la ciudad de Ushuaia, mientras íbamos navegando, nos sirvieron unos deliciosos alfajores triples acompañados de té caliente, y mientras saboreaba esto, hice unas fotos más.

As a bird watcher I was keen to know what birds were seen on your trip. Having a bird’s island 🏝️ must have been a good stopover experience. The cormorants and the gulls are often seen here too. But I’m sure they are still very different. The breathtaking view at the end was just wow. 🤩
