Tito the toucan - Tito el tucán
One of the things I most enjoyed during my trip in the jungle of Venezuela was the encounter with the fauna, I was able to touch, hold and hug animals that for me are exotic and for the Waraos Indians are their pets.
My first encounter was with Tito, the toucan, this little animal lives in the camp where we spent the nights, it is an adolescent not yet reached adulthood, that was what the locals told me and it was the first time I touched this beautiful bird species.
De las cosas que más disfrute de mi viaje en la selva de Venezuela fue el encuentro con la fauna, pude tocar, cargar y abrazar animales que para mí son exóticos y para los indígenas Waraos son sus mascotas.
Mi primer encuentro fue con Tito, el tucán, este animalito vive en el campamento donde pasamos las noches, es un adolescente todavía no llega a su edad adulta, eso fue lo que me dijeron los lugareños y era la primera vez que tocaba esta especie de ave tan hermosa.
He is not afraid of humans because he is used to their presence, I had a little problem with this little animal that wanted to eat me right away, it was love at first sight, he pecked me and wanted to tear my earlobe, guess what the reason was; stop and think for a moment.
Tito, apart from wanting to eat me also marked his territory, he left me a nice souvenir on my pants and shoes, a little poop to take with him. Have you guessed what Tito wanted with my ears? I was wearing some handmade earrings that were painted with the colors of my flag and they were made of seed, that's what they eat, they feed on seeds.
No les teme a los humanos porque está acostumbrado a su presencia, tuve un pequeño problema con este animalito que me quiso comer de inmediato, lo nuestro fue un amor a primera vista, me lleno de picotazos y quería arrancarme el lóbulo de la oreja, ¿Adivina cuál fue la razón?; detente y piensa por un momento.
Tito, aparte de querer comerme también marco su territorio, me dejo un lindo recuerdo en mis pantalones y zapatos, un poco de caca para llevar. ¿Ya adivinaste que quería Tito con mis orejas? yo estaba usando unos zarcillos artesanales que estaban pintados con los colores de mi bandera y eran hechos de semilla, eso es lo que ellos comen, se alimentan de semillas.
Capuchin Monkey - Mono capuchino
Another animal that stole my heart is the capuchin monkey that also lives in the camp, he was rescued from a family that had him chained and set free, now he is free to walk in the jungle, he comes and goes as he pleases, he is very mischievous like all of his kind, he is used to humans and approaches them, but he does not let himself be grabbed easily.
His name is Tomas, and he feeds on fruits, seeds, insects and other animals smaller than him, in the jungle there are another variety of monkeys like the araguatos, these are bigger and impossible to tame, they make a loud noise at night that gave me insomnia that was part of the adventure.
Otro animal que se robó mi corazón es el mono capuchino que también vive en el campamento, fue rescatado de una familia que lo tenían encadenado y puesto en libertad, ahora es libre de andar en la selva, va y viene a su antojo, es muy travieso como todos los de su especia, está acostumbrado a los humanos y se les acerca, pero no se deja agarrar con facilidad.
Él se llama Tomás, y se alimenta de frutas, semillas, insectos y de otros animales más pequeños que él, en la selva existen otra variedad de mono como los araguatos, estos son más grandes e imposibles de domesticar, hacen un ruido bastante fuerte por las noches que me produjeron insomnio eso formo parte de la aventura.
To Tomás' surprise, while we were visiting an indigenous family we met another smaller capuchin monkey, a baby and he was taken away from that house to keep him safe and to keep Tomás company, he was named Tomy and although we were afraid of the reaction between them they loved each other from the first moment, after a while they were playing together and spurring each other on.
Para sorpresa de Tomás, mientras visitábamos a una familia indígena nos encontramos con otro mono capuchino más pequeño, un bebe y fue retirado de esa casa para ponerlo a salvo y que le hiciera compañía a Tomás, se le llamó Tomy y aunque teníamos miedo de la reacción que pudiera haber entre ellos se amaron desde el primer instante, al rato ya andaban jugando juntos y espulgándose uno al otro.
The morrocoyes - Los morrocoyes
The morrocoyes can not miss in the jungle, in the place where we stayed they had some big ones of many years, some were 11, 13, 20, 25 and more, these data were given to me by a Warao boy who calls himself the owner of the camp since his father is the owner, He gave me a lesson about these animals and told me that they can tell the age of the morrocoyes by the wrinkles that surround the hexagons of their carapace, there you can also see their sex, the males are sunken to mount the female, while hers is flat.
They keep them at night in wooden corrals so they don't get lost and in the mornings they take them out to eat, they are not one of my favorite pets, but they look so cute that they make you kiss them, this animal is edible, they prepare them in various dishes, I have not tried them nor do I feel like them, although they say they are very rich in flavor and protein.
Los morrocoyes no pueden faltar en la selva, en el lugar donde nos hospedamos tenían unas grandes de muchos años, unas tenían 11, 13, 20, 25 y más, esos datos me los dio un niño Warao que se hace llamar el dueño del campamento, ya que su papá es el propietario, él me dio una lección sobre estos animales y me dijo que sacan los años de los morrocoyes por las arrugas que rodean los hexágonos de su caparazón, allí también se puede ver su sexo, el del macho es hundido para montar a la hembra, mientras que el de ella es plano.
Los resguardan en las noches dentro de unos corrales de madera para que no se pierdan y en las mañanas los sacan a comer, no son de mis mascotas favoritas, pero chiquitas se ven tan lindas que provocan besarlas, este animal es comestible los preparan en varios platos, no los he probado ni tampoco me apetecen, aunque dicen que son muy ricos en sabor y en proteínas.
Cachicamo
The next animal is the cachicamo as it is known in Venezuela or armadillo in Colombia, it has several names depending on the region, it is also food for humans, but it is not on my menu, the one that appears in the photos, a baby was very nervous to be among so many hands and with noise around him, he was trembling and some little hairs were standing up all over his shell. He is very scared, it was strange to touch him, I felt a soft skin to the touch, their shell is soft while they are babies, I guess they harden as they grow and age.
El siguiente animal es el cachicamo como se conoce en Venezuela o armadillo en Colombia, tiene varios nombres según la región, también es alimento de los humanos, pero no entran en mi menú, el que aparece en las fotos, un bebe estaba muy nervioso de estar entre tantas manos y con ruido en su entorno, temblaba y se le paraban unos pelitos por todo su caparazón. Está muy asustado, fue extraño tocarlo, sentí al tacto una piel suave, su caparazón es blando mientras están bebe, supongo que se endurecen a media que crecen y envejecen.
Parrot - Loro
The parrot is the only bird that can imitate the human voice and repeat everything we say, this parrot is a baby because it still lacks many feathers and does not know how to fly, another beautiful bird that abounds in the jungle. These birds for a long time were trafficked to other states of the country and even to neighboring countries of Venezuela.
El loro es la única ave que es capaz de imitar la voz humana y de repetir todo lo que decimos, este loro es pichón porque aún le faltan muchas plumas y no sabe volar, otro pájaro hermoso que abunda en la selva. Estas aves por mucho tiempo fueron producto de tráfico a otros estados del país e inclusive a países vecinos de Venezuela.
This animal is known to everyone and needs no introduction, I did not want to leave it out of this publication because apart from being beautiful and unique with its different colored eyes, it is also a dog that lives in the jungle on the banks of the Orinoco River.
Este animal todo el mundo lo conoce no necesita presentación, no quise dejarlo fuera de esta publicación porque aparte de ser bello y singular con sus ojos de diferente color también es un perro que vive en la selva a orillas del rio Orinoco.
Animal slime - Baba animal
It is a reptile of the same family as the crocodile, they grow the same and I find no differences, I asked several times for the mother and no one gave me an answer, they just laughed and looked at each other's faces, I guess it was food from the natives.
They are dangerous since they are small, they have many teeth and there he looks calm in the picture, but I had to make a slight pressure between his head and neck to immobilize him, his skin is with relief and looks like plastic, he has strength and gave us a scare when a girl almost escaped and struggled for several seconds between his hands, I remember the face of terror of the woman and the screams of the whole group ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. I see my pictures and I can't believe I have touched them, I am overcoming my fears, I still have to touch a snake and amphibians which are my biggest phobia.
Es un reptil de la misma familia que el cocodrilo, crecen igual y yo no les encuentro diferencias, pregunte varias veces por la madre y nadie me dio respuesta, solo se reían y se miraban los rostros entre sí, supongo que fue el plato de los indígenas.
Son peligrosos desde pequeños, tienen muchos dientes y allí se ve tranquilo en la fotografía, pero tuve que hacer una leve presión entre su cabeza y el cuello para inmovilizarlo, su piel es con relieve y parece plástica, tiene fuerza y nos dio un susto cuando a una chica casi se le escapa y forcejeó por varios segundos entre sus manos, recuerdo la cara de terror de la mujer y los gritos de todo el grupo ja, ja, ja. Observo mis fotos y no puedo creer que los toque, ando superando miedos, me falta tocar una serpiente y los anfibios que son mi mayor fobia.
The rabipelado or Zarigüeya - El rabipelado o Zarigüeya
Why would they call it that? Jajaja is a rodent mammal found in all parts of the country, both in the jungle and the plains and in the center where I live. They grow as big as a dog and can eat chickens, they are agile to climb trees and if you are scared of rats, the rhabipelados are like giant rats when they grow up, I had never touched one, they look cute as all the babies of the world, I was nervous and the best of all is that he was the pet of an old lady of the Warao ethnic group, Mrs. Maria, she was kind enough to lend him so that we all had contact with him, the lady feeds him with fruits and seeds and keeps him free, she says that this way he will grow and it is a question that he will want to stay and live in her palafito.
¿Por qué le dirán así? Jajaja es un mamífero roedor que se encuentra en todas partes del país, tanto en la selva como en los llanos y en el centro donde vivo. Crecen grandes del tamaño de un perro y pueden llegar a comerse las gallinas son ágiles para subirse a los árboles y si te asustan las ratas los rabopelados son como ratas gigantes cuando crecen, nunca había tocado uno, se ven tiernos como todos los bebes del mundo, estaba nervioso y lo mejor de todo es que era la mascota de una anciana de la etnia Warao la señora Maria, ella tuvo la amabilidad de prestarlo para que todos tuviéramos contacto con él, la señora lo alimenta con frutas y semillas y lo tiene libre, ella dice que así crecerá y es cuestión que se quiera quedar a vivir en su palafito.
Buffaloes - Búfalas
We visited a palafito that was like the high stratum of all the indigenous, they had shared rooms, and the kitchen and cabins were protected with wire mesh for the plague, they also had a gas cylinder, that is a tremendous luxury, but what most caught the attention of the group was to see a cattle and not identify what kind of animal they were.
Many of us said they were oxen, which are the tame bulls, others said they were cows, but in the end, we were all wrong, these cattle are buffaloes, I had never seen this animal, it looked like a tame animal and these were females, they had them for their milk, that is to say, they have small buffaloes. In fact, in my country, they sell buffalo cheese, but I thought it was a brand of cheese, not that it came from this animal. So apart from cows, bulls, and oxen, there are also buffaloes.
Visitamos un palafito que era como del estrato alto de todos los indígenas, tenían cuartos compartidos y la cocina y cabañas protegidas con tela metálica para la plaga, también tenían una bombona a gas, eso es un tremendo lujo, pero lo que más nos llamó la atención al grupo fue ver un ganado y no identificar que tipo de animal eran.
Muchos dijimos que eran bueyes, que son los toros mansos, otros que eran vacas, pero al final todos nos equivocamos, ese ganado es búfala, nunca había visto ese animal se ve manzo y estas eran hembras, las tenían para su leche, es decir tienen pequeños búfalos. De hecho en mi país venden el queso de bufala, pero yo pensaba que era una marca de queso, no que provenía de este animal. Así que aparte de las vacas, toros, bueyes, también existen los búfalos.
Tarantula - Tarántula
This spider is a tarantula. We were arriving at the camp at about 8 p.m. We were in a boat and everything was dark, the only light was the one guiding the captain. At one of those moments, one of the boys got up and almost hit a log that was sticking out. We all warned him to be careful because he was going to hit his head when he wanted to put his hand on the log and we shone our light on him, Our scream was worse, for a second he almost put his hand on the tarantula, but thank goodness it didn't happen, because it would have been the end of the trip.
Esta araña es una tarántula, estábamos llegando como a las 8 de la noche al campamento íbamos en lancha de motor y todo estaba oscuro la única luz era la que guiaba al capitán, en una de esa uno de los chicos se levantó y casi es golpeado con un tronco que sobresalía todos le advertimos que tuviera cuidado porque se iba a golpear la cabeza cuando quiso apoyar la mano en el tronco y lo alumbramos nuestro grito fue peor, por un segundo casi puso la mano sobre la tarántula, menos mal no ocurrió porque hubiese sido el fin del viaje.
Picure
This is another rodent mammal that was baby, when they grow up they look like the chigüire, I have a special affection for this species because an acure became my mother's pet and she always tells me that when she was a child and lived in the countryside she had an acure that was lost in the day in the bush of the field and returned at night to sleep with her in the same chinchorro (hammock) until one day my mom fell in love with a fine hen and made a deal with the owner changing the hen for her pet the picure, Many decades have passed since then, but my mom keeps the feeling of having exchanged her pet for that hen and the worst of all is that the bird became wild and joined the guacharacas which are another type of birds, in the end, she was left without a hen and the picure. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, poor my mom, but I laugh at this action of a little girl who is still repentant and with feelings.
Este es otro mamífero roedor que estaba bebe, al crecer se parecen al chigüire, le tengo un cariño especial a esta especie porque un acure llego a ser la mascota de mi madre y ella siempre me cuenta que cuando era niña y vivía en el campo tenía un acure que se perdida en el día en el monte del campo y volvía en las noches para dormir con ella en el mismo chinchorro (hamaca) hasta que un día mi mamá se enamoró de una gallina fina y realizo un truque con la dueña cambiando la gallina por su mascota el picure, han pasado muchas décadas de eso, pero mi mamá conserva el sentimiento de haber cambiado a su mascota por esa gallina y lo peor de todo es que el ave se volvió salvaje y se unió a las guacharacas que son otro tipo de aves, al final se quedó sin gallina y sin el picure. Ja, ja, ja, ja, pobre de mi mamá, pero me da risa esa acción de niña que aún está arrepentida y con sentimiento.

This bird is one of the pets that a Warao family has, to be able to pose with it we were warned to be careful with our eyes and not to see it from the front because it could feel threatened and attack us in the eyes, a group of the riskiest ones took pictures but with terrifying faces.
Esta ave es una de las mascotas que tiene una familia Warao, para poder posar con ella se nos advirtió que tuviéramos cuidado con los ojos y que no la viéramos de frente porque podía sentirse amenazada y atacarnos en los ojos, un grupo de los más arriesgados nos sacamos fotos pero con unas caras de terror.
During my days in the jungle there is something that called my attention, the silence, I do not know if it only happened to me but I did not hear the number of animals that I thought, nor were seen free in the jungle without taming as I expected. Making the comparison with the plains of Venezuela there you can hear many birds and the noise of all the animals. In the jungle, they are more cautious, silent, and dangerous.
Durante mis días por la selva hay algo que llamo mi atención, el silencio, no sé si solo me paso a mí, pero no se escuchaba la cantidad de animales que pensaba, ni tampoco se veían en libres en la selva sin domesticar como esperaba. Haciendo la comparación con los llanos de Venezuela, allí si se escuchan muchos pájaros y el ruido de todos los animales. En la selva son más cautelosos, silenciosos y peligrosos.
