Hello, my memories today will take us to Monserrate hill, a tourist destination that definitely could not be missed during our vacation!
Cuando la gente sabía que iría de vacaciones a la ciudad de Bogotá me decían muchas cosas, pero todas coincidían en una, debía ir a conocer Monserrate, así que mis expectativas estaban bastantes altas la verdad.
When people knew that I was going on vacation to the city of Bogota they told me many things, but they all agreed on one thing, I had to go to see Monserrate, so my expectations were quite high.
Decidimos visitar este destino turístico un día Domingo, ya que el costo de la entrada era menos a la habitual.
We decided to visit this tourist destination on a Sunday, since the entrance fee was less than usual.
Hay tres formas de visitar el lugar, la primera caminando (es mucho el trayecto, de aproximadamente dos horas o más y recordemos que es un cerro, así que la subida es significativa), luego tenemos el teleférico y por último el funicular, en estos dos últimos la tarifa de lunes a sábado y días feriados es de 13 mil pesos colombianos (aproximadamente 3,5 dólares americanos) para subir o para bajar, pero si se compran ambos pasajes salen en 22 mil pesos (6 dólares) por persona y el día domingo la tarifa es de 7.500 pesos colombianos (2 dólares americanos aproximadamente) para un total de 13 mil pesos o 3,5 dólares por persona, para subir y bajar.
There are three ways to visit the place, the first one walking (it is a long way, about two hours or more and remember that it is a hill, so the climb is significant), then we have the cable car and finally the funicular, in the latter two the rate from Monday to Saturday and holidays is 13 thousand Colombian pesos (approximately 3.5 U.S. dollars) to go up or down, but if you buy both tickets are 22 thousand pesos (6 dollars) per person and on Sunday the rate is 7. 500 Colombian pesos (2 U.S. dollars approximately) for a total of 13 thousand pesos or 3.5 dollars per person, to go up and down.
Como lo pueden notar, los días domingos el costo se reduce a la mitad, así que por esto escogimos ese día para nuestro paseo.
As you may notice, on Sundays the cost is reduced by half, so we chose that day for our tour.
Para nuestra sorpresa, a pesar de haber llegado bastante temprano, la fila era impresionante, claro tenía sentido, la entrada estaba a mitad de precio, estuvimos en la fila aproximadamente 2 horas para poder comprar las entradas y poder esperar luego el funicular y poder subir.
To our surprise, despite having arrived quite early, the line was impressive, of course it made sense, the entrance was half price, we were in line for about 2 hours to buy tickets and then wait for the funicular and go up.
Una vez que pasamos este proceso, llegar a la cima fue bastante rápido, cuestión como de cuatro minutos.
Once we got through this process, getting to the top was fairly quick, a matter of about four minutes.
Una vez que comenzamos nuestro recorrido, notamos que lo que guía el camino son las estaciones del viacrucis.
Once we begin our tour, we notice that what guides the way are the Stations of the Cross.

El lugar estaba repleto de gente y a pesar de esto nosotras estábamos felices de estar allí, de conocer y por fin entender toda esa grandeza de la que la gente nos hablaba.
The place was full of people and in spite of this we were happy to be there, to know and finally understand all the greatness people were telling us about.
Llegamos a un sitio donde una vez más tuvimos la dicha de ver a Bogotá en todo su esplendor, tan grande, tan amplia, tan imponente, tan llena de vida por encima de cualquier neblina.
We arrived at a place where once again we had the joy of seeing Bogota in all its splendor, so big, so wide, so imposing, so full of life above any fog.
Allí estábamos nosotros, a 3.200 metros sobre el nivel del mar, sonrientes y disfrutando cada segundo.
There we were, at 3,200 meters above sea level, smiling and enjoying every second.
Dejamos de descansar y continuamos con nuestro andar, fuimos a la parte comercial, donde venden todo tipo de souvenirs y comida, uno podría pensar facilmente (tal como nosotras lo hicimos) que los precios de las cosas por ser allí son más costosas y en el caso de las cosas artesanales son al mismo precio o inclusive se pueden llegar a encontrar algunas más económicas que en otra parte de la ciudad, de hecho nos pasó que no compramos nada allí pensando en eso y luego las encontramos más costosas en todas partes y terminamos por no comprarlas.
We stopped resting and continued with our walk, we went to the commercial part, where they sell all kinds of souvenirs and food, one could easily think (as we did) that the prices of things are more expensive there and in the case of handicrafts are the same price or you can even find some cheaper than elsewhere in the city, in fact we did not buy anything there thinking about it and then we found them more expensive everywhere and ended up not buying them.
Había una tiendita de cosas más elaboradas por decirlo así y estas sí eran un poco más costosas, en especial artículos religiosos como rosarios, imágenes católicas y demás.
There was a little shop with more elaborate items, so to speak, and these were a bit more expensive, especially religious items such as rosaries, Catholic images and so on.
Aprovechamos nuestro paseo y probamos un postre típico, que es Quajada (un tipo de queso artesanal), cubierto con arequipe (dulce de leche) y dulce de mora, que la verdad, sí estaba rico.
We took advantage of our walk and tried a typical dessert, which is Quajada (a type of artisan cheese), covered with arequipe (dulce de leche) and blackberry jam, which was really tasty.
No pudimos desaprovechar la oportunidad para probar también el tan nombrado té de coca, un té recomendado para diversas cosas entre ellas el mal de paramo (malestar que le da a las personas debido a la altura, puede presentar diversos sintomas tales como; mareo, nauseas, baja de tensión entre otros), lo pedimos para acompañar una arepita de queso y una almojábana. Los precios me parecieron económicos (en realidad la comida por lo general en Bogotá es más económica que en la ciudad donde vivo, o mejor dicho el país donde vivo).
We could not miss the opportunity to also try the so called coca tea, a tea recommended for various things including paramo sickness (discomfort that gives people due to the altitude, can present various symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, low blood pressure among others), we ordered it to accompany a cheese arepita and an almojábana. I found the prices to be economical (actually the food in Bogota is usually cheaper than in the city where I live, or rather the country where I live).
Lamentablemente a la iglesia no pudimos entrar por la cantidad excesiva de gente, era tanta que todo su interior estaba repleto de gente escuchando la misa.
Unfortunately we could not enter the church because of the excessive amount of people, it was so crowded that the whole interior was full of people listening to the mass.
Llegó la hora de irnos y nuestro plan desde el inicio era subir por funicular y bajar por teleférico, así que comenzamos a hacer la fila para bajar, pero era interminable y casi no avanzaba, a la hora de estar allí, decidimos bajar por funicular, donde nos llevó otra hora de fila poderlo tomar (pero al menos esta avanzaba más rapido que la del teleférico), en total estas fueron dos horas perdidas, por lo que si van a visitar el cerro Monserrate aconsejo que no sea un día domingo, ya sé que al principio les dije que se ahorraban la mitad del costo de los traslados para subir y para bajar, pero el tiempo perdido por la cantidad de gente vale el pago del boleto completo.
It was time to go and our plan from the beginning was to go up by funicular and down by cable car, so we started to make the line to go down, but it was endless and almost did not advance, at the time of being there, we decided to go down by funicular, where it took us another hour of line to take it (but at least this advanced faster than the cable car), In total these were two hours lost, so if you are going to visit the Monserrate hill I advise you not to go on a Sunday, I know that at the beginning I told you that you save half the cost of the transfers to go up and down, but the time lost due to the amount of people is worth paying the full ticket.
Por fin llegó nuestro turno de subirnos al funicular, y de esta manera nuestro paseo llegó a su fin!
Finally it was our turn to get on the funicular, and so our ride came to an end!
