The trip started at 5 in the morning in Ljubljana. We had picked out the road beforehand and found that even in Slovenia it is sometimes not easy to find the right bus or train connections. After a long search, we found the right connection at moderate prices. From Ljubljana to Kamnik and from there to Stahovica for a total of around 7 euro.
In the morning, after the alarm clock rang, we went to the kitchen to prepare the pancakes. At 5:30 we left the house with the complete equipment, in order to spend the night in the mountains. Food for two days, cooking station, tent, sleeping equipment, and warm clothes. We had also reckoned on the rain, and it could be cold in Velika Planina at around 1600 meters.
Arrived in the morning in time at the bus stop in Ljubljana, we started already towards the Alps.
After about one-hour drive and one change, we were already there.
The bus driver was kind enough to let us off directly in Stahovica, where the hiking trail was already waiting for us.
After a slight ascent, we found our first place to eat our breakfast prepared at home. The chocolate sauce could not be missing.
Strengthened for the climb, we continued, and our second break was at the church in Sv Primoz. We wanted to enjoy the day and take our time, so we deliberately planned many breaks.
It was a beautiful Monday morning and the break at the church was very relaxing in Sv Primoz. Switching off from everyday life, work and sitting in front of the screen was successful.
Half an hour later, we continued our trip. We met a lot of beautiful plants and hardly any people on the way, except for a group of Israelis, who immediately spoke to us in English and greeted us in a friendly manner, actually no one. After two thirds of the ascent we made another break and after lunch which was leftover from the day before (Indian Dall, rice and a hot chocolate) we fell asleep for 2 hours in the middle of the forest.
Our latest acquisition, the foldable mattresses, came were very helpful to us for this.
They are recommended because we had bad experiences in the past with mattresses to inflate. In addition, these foldable mattresses can also be easily put anywhere, and you have something to sit or lie down.
It was a good feeling when we crossed the 1000 meter mark. But it was something else to see the valley of Velika Planina. Impressive to see these 100 or more houses high up in the mountains built of wood on a kind of plateau. People traditionally keep cows here to produce cheese and butter. Unfortunately, everything was already sold out. However, an old man showed us his house. Here, people live with the cows under one roof. It was very interesting because the houses appear very large from the outside. However, the living space such as kitchen, bedroom and dining room are all in one room.
The houses are also for rent, as not all are still used for cheese production.
On a hut, which was developed as a bar, there was then nevertheless still some cheese in a traditional cake. Sirovi struklji with caramel was super tasty and worth recommending.
As the day was drawing to a close and somewhere in the middle of nowhere, we found a suitable place to camp. After dinner, we were then discovered by the cows, who were very curious and wanted to taste what a hiking backpack tastes like.
A few moments after the sunset it went for us, already off in the tent. Comfortable and warm, we fell asleep after the beautiful and also exhausting day.
The next morning we started already at 4:30, because we wanted to see the sunrise. A short time later we started the descent and after 3 hours we were already in the bus on the way back to Ljubljana.
Mega tour for one night with a great view in nature.
Easy ascent and also good connection if you want to go by public transport.
Here we still link the websites to make it easier and also the hiking map we found on the net.
