Hi Everyone,

When we travel domestically in Japan, we try to take the bullet train but for some destinations, it is not always possible due to location or distance so this is when we fly. We had to fly from Hakata back to Tokyo briefly so taking the plane for 1-2 hour flight is much better than taking the bullet train for 6+ hours. Flying domestically in Japan is very convenient, even more so than in Sydney. The check-in process was very easy especially since we booked our tickets online and with only two hand carry luggage (we are only away for a few days), there is no need to drop any luggage.

The airport wasn’t very big compared to Osaka or Tokyo domestic airports but enough to let us get a few things before we flew. I suggest that you get all the gifts that you want before security as there are lots of choices outside whereas when you pass security, you are limited to a few smaller stores. The airport overall was very basic but enough to make things interesting compared to back home. It was extremely clean and there was plenty of seating inside when waiting for our flight.

Gifts from different sweet and biscuit boxes to tea, snacks, soup packs, seaweed, etc can all be found at these stores. Many of them are local delicacies and people like to buy them to take home or give them to friends as gifts even though they all live in Japan. We bought a few things and quickly went through security. The store inside as I mentioned was very limited and even the bento boxes and rice balls were limited also. We were a little late so we didn’t eat outside we all got a small rice ball and took it onto the plane to keep our energy levels up as our domestic flight does not include food but does include a drink. It is standard now that most of these domestic flights don’t include food as they are normally short hauls even though we are paying full service like on JAL and ANA.

One thing to note is that Hakata airport is very close to the city so we didn’t have to stress about getting there much earlier than other airports. We took a cab from our hotel to the airport as it was so close and with the 4 of us, much easier than taking public transport.
