Hi Everyone,

On our way to a train expo, we came across Osaka Gokoku Jinja 護国神社 when we were changing trains. I’ve sent his Jinja previously online during Sakura season, the whole Jinja will be filled with cheery blossoms so when we saw it, I was very keen to go in and pay a visit. Gokoku in Japanese is “protecting the country” therefore this Jinja is to pays tribute to the veterans from Osaka area who fought for their country in wars in the past. We first saw a huge Tori Gate before going into the grounds with a line of trees and also seeing statues of various people from past wars.

Visitors and locals will come here to pray for driving/road safety, personal safety etc to ensure the rest of the year will have good luck. Just like all the other shrines we have been to, this place was exceptionally quiet. Even with the large outdoor area, we could only hear the odd cars outside on the main road going by or some birds flying above.

The weather was fabulous on the day so we walked around the Jinja before heading to tour next stop. Most of the ground has gravel except for the path of the main building and the shop that sells the annual lucky charms. They also sell yearly fortunes for those who want to see their luck in 2024.

We were the only few visitors at that time. I believe that it does get pretty busy on the weekends and public holidays as people will come to make their prayers. After some exploring, we headed back to the station to get other our destination. I advise a visit to Gokoku Jinja on a fine day as there is no covering and would be pretty messy with the graves if it gets too crowded. Entry was free but we made a donation at the box in the main building. Such a lovely stop in between our change of train station.
