Hey guys! Today I would like to present you my travel report about the second big city I visited in Georgia. Batumi is the second largest city in Georgia after the capital Tbilisi and is located directly on the Black Sea, only 18km from the border with Turkey. Despite numerous luxury hotels, a kilometer-long beach and many sights, you can still hardly find any western tourists here. So is the capital of the Ajarian region still a real insider's tip? Just read on if you are interested in the answer to this question.
Hallo Leute! Heute möchte ich euch meinen Reisebericht über die zweite große Stadt, die ich in Georgien besucht habe, präsentieren. Batumi ist nach der Hauptstadt Tiflis die zweitgrößte Stadt Georgiens und liegt direkt am schwarzen Meer, nur 18km von der Grenze zur Türkei entfernt. Trotz zahlreicher Luxushotels, einem kilometerlangen Strand und vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten, findet man hier noch so gut gut wie keine westlichen Touristen. Ist die Hauptstadt der Region Adscharien also noch ein wahrer Geheimtipp? Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr euch für die Antwort auf diese Frage interessiert.
Batumi has its own international airport, but can best be reached from the EU via the airline Wizz Air and Kutaisi Airport, which is only a two-hour bus ride away. However, since I previously visited the capital of Georgia, my arrival was by train from Tbilisi. This train runs up to three times a day, is cheap and surprisingly modern - almost futuristic by Georgian standards. Unfortunately, the average speed is only 60km/h. It feels a bit like driving a Lamborghini on a gravel road. Nevertheless, after six hours the destination was finally reached and I could start my exploration of the city.
Batumi verfügt über einen eigenen internationalen Flughafen, kann aber von der EU am besten über die Fluglinie Wizz Air und den Flughafen Kutaissi erreicht werden, der nur eine zweistündige Busfahrt entfernt liegt. Da ich zuvor die Hauptstadt Georgiens besuchte, erfolgte meine Anreise jedoch von Tiflis aus mit dem Zug. Dieser verkehrt bis zu dreimal täglich, ist günstig und überraschend modern - fast schon futuristisch für georgische Verhältnisse. Leider beträgt die Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit nur 60km/h. Es fühlt sich ein bisschen so an, als würde man mit einem Lamborghini auf einer Schotterstraße fahren. Nach sechs Stunden war das Ziel aber endlich erreicht und ich konnte mit meiner Stadterkundung beginnen.
My first way led me directly to the beach. This as well as the 7km long beach promenade stretch along the entire city center. So you are never far from the sea, no matter where you are. If you expect a fine white sandy beach, you will be disappointed though. Here you will find only stones, which vary in size depending on the beach section. Visually, the beach is not very inviting, but once you get used to it, you can enjoy the clear water and the sun rays on your skin.
Mein erster Weg führte mich direkt an den Strand. Dieser sowie die 7km lange Strandpromenade ziehen sich das gesamte Stadtzentrum entlang. Man ist also nie weit vom Meer entfernt, egal wo man sich gerade befindet. Wer einen feinen weißen Sandstrand erwartet, wird jedoch enttäuscht sein. Hier findet man nur Steine, die je nach Strandabschnitt in ihrer Größe variieren. Optisch wirkt der Strand dadurch nicht sehr einladend, hat man sich aber erstmal daran gewöhnt, kann man das klare Wasser und die Sonnenstrahlen auf der Haut genießen.
Dubai, Las Vegas, ...Batumi is often compared with very famous modern cities. The reason for this is a real construction boom that has been going on here for several years. It is fascinating how many apartment blocks and luxury hotels are currently under construction here. But many of the futuristic projects have already been completed. I was particularly impressed by the Orbi Towers - one of the largest hotel complexes in the world. But also smaller architectural highlights, such as the unique wedding hall or a hyper-modern Mc Donalds show how much the focus is on the future here.
Dubai, Las Vegas, …es sind klingende Städtenamen, mit denen Batumi oft verglichen wird. Der Grund dafür ist ein wahrer Bauboom der hier seit einigen Jahren herrscht. Es ist faszinierend, wie viele Apartment-Blöcke und Luxushotels sich hier gerade im Bau befinden. Doch viele der futuristischen Projekte sind bereits fertiggestellt. Besonders beeindruckt haben mich z.B. die Orbi-Towers - einer der größten Hotelkomplexe weltweit. Aber auch kleinere architektonische Highlights, wie das einzigartige Standesamt oder eine hyper-moderne Mc Donalds-Filiale zeigen, wie sehr man hier den Blick in die Zukunft richtet.
Another highlight is the well-kept old town, which impresses with various architectural styles from different eras. Architecturally, one notices the geographical proximity to Turkey here. The Batumi Piazza, on the other hand, was designed in Italian style and forms a nice contrast to Europe Square, which could be described as the city's main square.
Ein weiteres Highlight ist die gepflegte Altstadt, die mit verschiedenen Baustilen aus den unterschiedlichsten Epochen überzeugt. Architektonisch merkt man hier teilweise auch die geografische Nähe zur Türkei. Die Batumi-Piazza hingegen wurde nach italienischem Vorbild gestaltet und bildet einen schönen Kontrast zum Europaplatz, den man als Hauptplatz der Stadt bezeichnen könnte.
The sunsets in Batumi are especially beautiful. Since the beach faces west, you can watch the sun sink into the sea here. There is also no shortage of evening activities. In this regard, I especially recommend the area around the ferris wheel and the unique Alphabet Tower. There is a festival atmosphere here every evening. Sometimes there are even concerts.
Die Sonnenuntergänge in Batumi sind besonders schön. Da der Strand nach Westen ausgerichtet ist, kann man hier die Sonne im Meer versinken sehen. Auch an Abendaktivitäten mangelt es nicht. Hier empfehle ich besonders den Bereich um das Riesenrad und den einzigartigen Alphabet-Tower. Hier herrscht jeden Abend Jahrmarkt-Atmosphäre. Teilweise finden auch Konzerte statt.
It would go far beyond the scope of this article to mention the many many other attractions of the city. My seven days were also far from enough to explore all the highlights. In any case, I can only warmly recommend you Batumi for a wonderful summer vacation. You will certainly not get bored here, I can guarantee that. As a last aspect I would like to mention the unbelievably affordable price level. A summer vacation in Batumi costs currently about a third of a comparable trip to Spain, Greece or Italy. So is Batumi an insider tip? My answer is definitely "Yes!"
Es würde den Rahmen dieses Beitrags bei weitem sprengen, die vielen vielen weiteren Attraktionen der Stadt hier zu nennen. Meine sieben Tage reichten auch bei weitem nicht aus, um alle Highlights zu erkunden. Jedenfalls kann ich euch Batumi für einen traumhaften Sommerurlaub nur wärmstens empfehlen. Langweilig wird euch hier sicher nicht, das kann ich euch garantieren. Als letzten Aspekt möchte ich noch das unglaublich günstige Preisniveau erwähnen. Ein Sommerurlaub in Batumi kostet zur Zeit ungefähr ein Drittel einer vergleichbaren Reise nach Spanien, Griechenland oder Italien. Ist Batumi also ein Geheimtipp? Meine Antwort lautet eindeutig „Ja!“
