Hey guys! Another exciting short trip in Mexico lies behind me. I was able to experience three days and three fascinating as well as very different destinations and would like to tell you about the first stop of our little road trip today. Just a two-hour drive from Mexico City you can find a fascinating place with extremely high cultural significance for the Mexican population. Despite this, Chalma is still completely untouched by international tourism. So today I'm going to introduce you to a real hidden gem for a day trip from Mexico City.
Hallo Leute! Wieder einmal liegt ein aufregender Kurztrip in Mexiko hinter mir. Drei Tage und drei faszinierende sowie sehr unterschiedliche Destinationen durfte ich erleben und möchte euch heute von der ersten Station unseres kleinen Roadtrips berichten. Nur eine zweistündige Autofahrt von Mexico City entfernt, liegt ein faszinierender Ort mit extrem hoher kultureller Bedeutung für die mexikanische Bevölkerung. Trotzdem ist Chalma vom internationalen Tourismus noch gänzlich unberührt. Ich stelle euch also heute einen wirklichen Geheimtipp für einen Tagesausflug von Mexiko Stadt aus vor.
It was only by my Mexican girlfriend and her parents that I learnt about Chalma and its sights. After a little research, I found out that it is no less than the second most visited pilgrimage site in the whole country. A few weeks later, we started our trip and even the journey was somehow special. After a short section of motorway, we took an idyllic country road through the Mexican nature. There is a 30 kilometre stretch of forest on the way, during which you don't see a single house. This reminded me of the "Road to Hana", which I had driven on Maui (Hawaii) many years ago. However, the arrival in Chalma was in total contrast to this. There was a festival atmosphere going on. We started our walk and treated ourselves to some delicious barbacoa tacos.
Erst von meiner mexikanische Partnerin und ihren Eltern erfuhr ich überhaupt von Chalma und seinen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Nach kurzer Recherche fand ich heraus, dass es sich dabei um nicht weniger als den zweitmeistbesuchten Pilgerort des Landes handelt. Wenige Wochen später starteten wir unseren Trip und schon die Anreise war irgendwie besonders. Nach einem kurzen Autobahn-Abschnitt, ging es über eine idyllische Landstraße durch die mexikanische Natur. Unterwegs gibt es einen 30km langen Wald-Abschnitt, während dem man kein einiges Haus sieht. Dies erinnerte mich an die "Road to Hana", die ich vor vielen Jahren auf Maui (Hawaii) befahren hatte. Die Ankunft in Chalma stand jedoch in krassem Gegensatz dazu. Hier herrschte Volksfest-Stimmung. Wir starteten unseren Spaziergang und gönnten uns erstmal ein paar leckere Barbacoa-Tacos.
A dessert was also quickly found. Crocodile-shaped bread with a chocolate flavour? Whenever I think I've tried all the crazy dishes in Mexico, I'm proven wrong. That was the case this time too. Nevertheless, it was very tasty. We walked past the many market stalls and small restaurants towards the main attraction of Chalma. You may be surprised when I tell you that it is a tree that attracts such large crowds every day, but this tree has a very special meaning.
Auch eine Nachspeise war schnell gefunden. Brot in Krokodil-Form mit Schokoladen-Geschmack? Immer wenn ich denke, ich hätte alle verrückten Speisen in Mexiko bereits probiert, werde ich eines besseren belehrt. So war es auch diesmal der Fall. Nichtsdestotrotz war es sehr lecker. Vorbei an den vielen Marktständen und kleinen Restaurants spazierten wir in Richtung der Hauptsehenswürdigkeit von Chalma. Vielleicht seid ihr überrascht, wenn ich euch erzähle, dass es sich um einen Baum handelt, der täglich so große Menschenmassen anzieht, doch dieser Baum hat eine besondere Bedeutung.
The Ahuehuete of Chalma, also known as the "Montezuma cypress", is a truly majestic and impressive specimen of this evergreen tree, whose origins date back to pre-Columbian times. The Ahuehuete is closely linked to Mexican mythology and is often regarded as a sacred tree. However, the people of Mexico value the ahuehuete not only for its imposing appearance, but also for the cultural and religious significance attributed to it. The water from the stream that flows along the roots is highly valued. We also queued up to wash our hands with it. Some visitors even bathed in it or took it home in canisters or bottles.
Die Ahuehuete von Chalma, auch als „Montezuma-Zypresse“ bekannt, ist ein wahrhaft majestätisches und eindrucksvolles Exemplar dieses immergrünen Baumes, dessen Ursprung auf präkolumbianische Zeiten zurückgeht. Die Ahuehuete ist eng mit der mexikanischen Mythologie verbunden und wird oft als heiliger Baum betrachtet. Doch die Menschen in Mexiko schätzen die Ahuehuete nicht nur wegen ihrer imposanten Erscheinung, sondern auch wegen der kulturellen und religiösen Bedeutung, die ihr zugeschrieben wird. Das Wasser des Baches, der an den Wurzeln entlangfließt, ist heiß begehrt. Auch wir stellten uns in die Warteschlange, um uns damit die Hände zu waschen. Einige Besucher badeten sogar darin oder nahmen es in Kanistern oder Flaschen mit nach Hause.
Immediately afterwards, we made our way to the second main attraction, which we reached via a seemingly endless staircase with around 700 steps. A 33-metre-high golden statue of the Virgin Mary stands there, which can be seen from afar. We were really impressed by the sight of this monumental sculpture. But I also had a funny experience here, as there is a really strange rule for visitors. At the entrance to the steps and later at the monument itself, we were told that we had to pray before we were allowed to take a photo. And indeed, when I reached for my mobile phone to take a photo, I was immediately admonished by a security guard. I can't tell you exactly what the prayer is supposed to look like, but silent prayers obviously don't count. Luckily the securities didn't have their eyes on me all the time ;-)
Gleich im Anschluss machten wir uns auf den Weg zur zweiten Hauptsehenswürdigkeit, die wir über eine schier endlose Treppe mit rund 700 Stufen erreichten. Dort erhebt sich eine 33m hohe, goldene Marienstatue, die man schon von weitem erkennen kann. Wir waren wirklich beeindruckt vom Anblick dieser monumentalen Skulptur. Doch hier hatte ich auch ein lustiges Erlebnis. Es gibt hier nämlich eine wirklich kuriose Regel für Besucher. Schon am Eingang zu den Stufen und auch später an der Staute selbst wurde uns gesagt, dass wir zuerst beten müssten, bevor wir ein Foto machen dürfen. Und tatsächlich, als ich zu meinem Handy griff, um zu fotografieren, wurde ich sofort von einem Security ermahnt. Ich kann euch nicht sagen, wie genau das Gebet aussehen soll, doch stille Gebete funktionieren offensichtlich nicht. Zum Glück hatten mich die Securities nicht ständig im Auge ;-)
Back in the valley, we visited the small church and treated ourselves to a large Michelada. We strolled through the lively markets before continuing our road trip. By the way, there is another curiosity here. You can have your car blessed and decorated with flowers. This is supposed to protect against accidents. I am always fascinated by the unusual Mexican traditions and the unique mix of pre-Columbian and Christian culture.
Wieder im Tal angekommen, besuchten wir noch die kleine Kirche und gönnten uns einen großen Michelada. Wir spazierten noch weiter durch die quirligen Märkte, bevor wir unseren Roadtrip fortsetzten. Übrigens gibt es hier ein weiteres Kuriosum. Man kann sein Auto segnen und mit Blumen schmücken lassen. Dies soll vor Unfällen schützen. Ich bin immer wieder fasziniert von den außergewöhnlichen mexikanischen Bräuchen und dem einzigartigen Mix aus präkolumbianischer und christlicher Kultur.
Finally, we drove through the town centre, which was also more than busy on this sunny Sunday afternoon. Chalma really excited me and I can tell you that I was probably the only foreign visitor there. It's just incredible how many unique places you can explore in the neighbourhood of the Mexican capital. In the next post, I will tell you about another example of this, as the next destination on our road trip was also exciting and highly interesting.
Schließlich fuhren wir noch durch das Ortszentrum, das ebenfalls mehr als gut besucht war an diesem sonnigen Sonntagnachmittag. Chalma hat mich wirklich begeisert und ich kann euch sagen, ich war wohl der einzige ausländische Besucher dort. Es ist einfach unglaublich, wie viele einzigartige Ort man in der Umgebung der mexikanischen Hauptstadt erkunden kann. Im nächsten Beitrag werde ich euch von einem weiteren Beispiel dafür berichten, denn auch das nächste Ziel auf unserem Roadtrip war spannend und hochinteressant.
