Hey guys! It's time for a travel report again, because last weekend I had a new adventure in Mexico on my agenda. Grutas de Tolantongo is the name of the fascinating place that my girlfriend and I visited on a day trip. The name itself is a bit confusing, because the grutas (caves) are probably the least spectacular sight you can find there. In this post, I want to tell you what are the spectacular attractions that pull thousands of visitors to this spot and how we experienced our stay.
Hallo Leute! Es ist wieder einmal Zeit für einen Reisebericht, denn letztes Wochenende stand bei mir wieder ein neues Abenteuer in Mexiko auf dem Programm. Grutas de Tolantongo heißt der faszinierende Ort, den meine Freundin und ich im Rahmen eines Tagesausflugs besuchten. Dabei ist schon der Name etwas verwirrend, denn die Grutas (Höhlen) sind die wohl am wenigsten spektakuläre Sehenswürdigkeit, die man dort finden kann. In diesem Beitrag möchte ich euch erzählen, was die spektakulären Attraktionen sind, die tausende Besucher anziehen und wie wir unseren Aufenthalt erlebten.
Once again, we chose a bus trip, which cost the equivalent of about US$40 per person, including entrance fees. So we could relax a bit during the five-hour ride. But the trip itself was already a highlight, especially the last half hour. Tolantongo is located in a canyon and to get there you have to drive down the 500m deep gorge over numerous serpentines. The views of the semi-desert landscape were truly spectacular. Once we reached the bottom, some stairs were waiting for us before we finally reached the Tolantongo River.
Wir entschieden uns wieder für eine Busreise, die inklusive Eintritt umgerechnet ca. 40€ pro Person kostete. So konnten wir während der fünfstündigen Fahrt etwas entspannen. Doch die Fahrt selbst war bereits ein Highlight, insbesondere was die letzte halbe Stunde betraf. Tolantongo befindet sich nämlich in einem tiefen Canyon und um dort anzukommen, muss man erst einmal die 500m tiefe Schlucht über zahlreiche Serpentinen hinunterfahren. Die Ausblicke auf die Halbwüsten-Landschaft waren wirklich spektakulär. Unten angekommen, warteten einige Treppen auf uns, bevor wir schließlich den Tolantongo-Fluss erreichten.
Once we arrived downstairs, we were overwhelmed by the rush of visitors. Already in the morning hours hundreds of visitors bathed in the milky turquoise water. The river is dammed up here in a cascade-like manner, which softens the current and makes bathing much easier. Nevertheless, you should definitely bring bathing shoes, because the bottom of the river is very rocky and uneven. We were particularly surprised by the water temperature. So far, bathing in rivers always cost me quite a bit of overcoming because of the cold water. The Tolantongo River however feels like a huge bathtub. I estimated the water temperature to at least 25°C on the day of our visit. But of course we did not only want to swim, but also to visit the waterfalls and caves. So we went over many steps uphill again.
Unten angekommen waren wir erstmal vom Besucher-Ansturm überwältigt. Bereits in den Vormittagsstunden badeten hunderte Besucher im milchig türkisen Wasser des Flusses. Dieses wird hier kaskadenartig aufgestaut, was die Strömung mildert und das Baden somit sehr viel einfacher macht. Trotzdem solltet ihr unbedingt Badeschuhe mitbringen, denn der Grund des Flusses ist sehr felsig und uneben. Besonders überrascht hat uns die Wassertemperatur. Bisher kostete mich das Baden in Flüssen, aufgrund des kalten Wassers, immer einiges an Überwindung. Der Tolantongo-Fluss fühlt sich hingegen wie eine riesige Badewanne an. Die Wassertemperatur betrug am Tag unseres Besuchs geschätzt mindestens 25°C. Doch natürlich wollten wir nicht nur baden, sondern auch die Wasserfälle und Höhlen besuchen. Also ging es über viele Stufen wieder bergauf.
Unfortunately you are not allowed to take any luggage to the waterfalls. So we had to pay another 100 pesos + 50 pesos deposit for a locker. On the further footpath, the mass of visitors became more and more unpleasant. This resulted in long queues at the entrance to the caves. I therefore only looked at the lower cave, which consisted of a crowded pool behind the waterfall. The upper cave is also not much bigger or more spectacular, as I was told by my girlfriend, who had visited Tolantongo before. So we focused on the really fascinating stuff. These include the many waterfalls and the semi-tropical vegetation along the river. I could hardly get out of my amazement. It was like a paradise!
Leider darf man keinerlei Gepäck zu den Wasserfällen mitnehmen. Somit mussten wir nochmals 100 Pesos + 50 Pesos Pfand für einen Spind bezahlen. Auf dem weiteren Fußweg wurde auch die Masse an Besuchern immer unangenehmer. Dies gipfelte darin, dass sich am Eingang zu den Höhlen lange Schlangen bildeten. Ich sah mir deshalb nur die untere Höhle an, die aus einem überfüllten Becken hinter dem Wassserfall bestand. Auch die obere Höhle ist nicht wesentlich größer oder spektakulärer, wie mir meine Freundin berichtete, die Tolantongo schon einmal zuvor besucht hatte. Also fokussierten wir uns auf die wirklich faszinierenden Dinge. Dazu zählen die vielen Wasserfälle und die halbtropische Vegetation entlang des Flusses. Ich kam kaum aus dem Staunen heraus. Es war wirklich paradiesisch!
Afterwards we visited the nearby suspension bridge and walked a wide, stone-paved trail back to the parking lot where we had arrived. Here too, we could enjoy beautiful views of the river and the surrounding mountains. Once we arrived at the parking lot, we boarded a minibus that cost only 10 pesos per ride, which took us to another highlight. I'm talking about a place that I had already seen and admired many times on Instagram. The pools of Tolantongo are located directly on the cliffs and are an absolutely unique sight.
Anschließend besuchten wir die nahegelegene Hängebrücke und spazierten einen breiten, mit Steinen gepflasterten Wanderweg zurück zum Parkplatz, an dem wir angekommen waren. Auch hier konnten wir wunderschöne Aussichten auf den Fluss und die umgebenden Berge genießen. Am Parkplatz angekommen, stiegen wir in einen Kleinbus, der nur 10 Pesos pro Fahrt und Person kostete und uns zu einem weiteren Highlight bringen sollte. Ich spreche von einem Ort, den ich schon unzählige Male auf Instagram gesehen und bewundert hatte. Die Pools von Tolantongo befinden sich direkt an den Felsklippen und sind ein absolut einzigartiger Anblick.
Unfortunately, the crowds of visitors clouded the impression a bit here as well. Nevertheless, it was an incredible experience to swim in the pools with these breathtaking views. By the way, the water here was even warmer than in the river. What surprised me personally very much: There were almost exclusively Mexicans among the visitors. I would have expected much more international tourists. After the bathing fun, we treated ourselves to a small snack before starting the six-hour journey back to Mexico City.
Leider trübten auch hier die Besuchermassen den Eindruck etwas. Trotzdem war es ein unglaubliches Erlebnis, mit diesen atemberaubenden Ausblicken in den Pools zu baden. Das Wasser hier war übrigens noch wesentlich wärmer, als im Fluss. Was mich persönlich sehr überraschte: Es befanden sich sich fast ausschließlich Mexikaner unter den Besuchern. Ich hätte viel mehr internationale Touristen erwartet. Nach dem Badespass gönnten wir uns einen kleinen Snack, bevor wir die sechsstündige Rückreise nach Mexico City antraten.
What a day! We enjoyed our seven hours in Tolantongo very much. Nevertheless, I have two important tips for you, if you want to visit this fascinating place. First, you should definitely plan at least one overnight stay in one of the numerous hotels that are located directly on site. This way you will have more time to swim, explore and enjoy. In addition, you will avoid having to drive more than ten hours in a single day to get there and back. Second, if possible, schedule your visit on weekdays to avoid large crowds. Especially if you keep these two tips in mind, I am sure you will love this miracle of nature!
Was für ein Tag! Wir genossen unsere sieben Stunden in Tolantongo sehr. Trotzdem habe ich zwei wichtige Tipps für euch, wenn ihr diesen faszinierenden Ort besuchten wollt. Zum einen solltet ihr unbedingt zumindest eine Übernachtung in einem der zahlreichen Hotels, die sich direkt vor Ort befinden, einplanen. So habt ihr mehr Zeit zum Baden, Erkunden und Genießen. Außerdem vermeidet ihr es, für die An- und Abreise über zehn Stunden an einem einzigen Tag fahren zu müssen. Zweitens solltet ihr euren Besuch, wenn möglich, an Wochentagen einplanen, um große Menschenmassen zu vermeiden. Vor allem wenn ihr diese zwei Tipps berücksichtigt, bin ich mir sicher, dass ihr dieses Wunder der Natur lieben werdet!

I loved this place! How incredible how they built all those pools with such great views. It must be amazing to swim there. And it's good that there is also a place to walk a bit and see waterfalls. It was surely worth going there, although the recommendation to spend the night is also very good. And sorry for the amount of tourists, but it's the consequences of visiting a cool place like this.
Here in Argentina I visited a similar place, the Termas de Cacheuta in the province of Mendoza. It reminded me a bit of this place, although there are not so many hot spring pools in the place you showed us.

Das ist ja alles total ausgebaut!!! Selbst die Straße war nur eine Schotterpiste als ich das erste Mal da war. Und klar, bei meinem zweiten Besuch dachte ich es gäbe viele Besucher, aber vor den Höhlen Schlange stehen? Ne, das hätte ich mir gar nicht denken können.
Ja, ich denke, wenn das so weitergeht, wird's bald eine maximale Tageskapazität geben und man muss die Tickets im Voraus buchen. Wäre vielleicht eh sinnvoller.
Ja das wäre es... allerdings kann ich mir sowas in Mexiko weniger vorstellen. Stattdessen bauen sie die Wege noch mehr aus, und setzten noch ein paar weitere Hotels dazu.
Da hast du wahrscheinlich recht. Hab gestern auch mit den Eltern meiner Freundin (beide Mexikaner) drüber geredet und sie haben die gleiche Einschätzung.
