Saranda - A hidden Gem Destination for Travelers & Digital Nomads [EN/DE]

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you had a good start! Today I have a little secret travel tip for you. I would like to tell you about a place that is ideal for a vacation, but where you would certainly like to stay longer than a few days, if you are, for example, like me, a digital nomad. I' m talking about the city of Saranda on the Albanian Riviera, which I visited in September 2021.

Frohes Neues Jahr, Leute! Ich hoffe, ihr seid gut hineingestartet! Heute habe ich einen kleinen Reise-Geheimtipp für euch. Ich möchte euch von einem Ort erzählen, der sich ideal für einen Urlaub eignet, an dem es euch aber sicher auch länger als ein paar Tage gefallen würde, wenn ihr zum Beispiel, so wie ich, Digitale Nomaden seid. Es geht um die Stadt Saranda an der albanischen Riviera, die ich im September 2021 besuchte.

Saranda is located in the very south of the Albanian coast, just a few kilometers from the Greek border. The city does not have its own airport, but you can reach it quite easily by taking a flight to the Greek island of Corfu and a ferry directly to Saranda from there. Personally, I arrived by bus, however, because I visited the Albanian capital Tirana beforehand.

Saranda befindet sich ganz im Süden der albanischen Küste, nur wenige Kilometer von der griechischen Grenze entfernt. Die Stadt verfügt über keinen eigenen Flughafen, aber man kann sie ganz einfach erreichen, indem man auf die griechische Insel Korfu fliegt und von dort eine Fähre direkt nach Saranda nimmt. Ich persönlich kam aber mit dem Bus an, da ich zuvor die albanische Hauptstadt Tirana besuchte.

I had booked an apartment and my friendly host even picked me up from the bus stop for free. My accommodation itself, was comfortably furnished, very clean and had a fast, stable WiFi connection, which is of course essential for me to be able to work. But the highlight was undoubtedly the large balcony with its spectacular view, of the city, the beach, the sea, the mountains and even Corfu. I was totally fascinated, but have a look for yourself.

Ich hatte ein Apartment gebucht und mein freundlicher Gastgeber holte mich sogar kostenlos von der Bushaltestelle ab. Meine Unterkunft an sich war gemütlich eingerichtet, sehr sauber und hatte eine schnelle, stabile WiFi-Verbindung, was für mich natürlich essentiell ist, um arbeiten zu können. Das Highlight war aber zweifellos der große Balkon mit seiner spektakulären Aussicht, auf die Stadt, den Strand, das Meer, die Berge und sogar Korfu. Ich war total fasziniert, aber seht selbst.

Of course, I enjoyed using the balcony as an office every day, and with the excellent view I found enough inspiration to work on my latest book, which I published a few weeks after this trip. But Saranda also impressed me with its beach. It was only a few meters away from my apartment, so during my breaks from work I decided to cool off in the crystal-clear water and enjoy the sun.

Natürlich genoss ich es jeden Tag, den Balkon als Büro zu nutzen und bei dem hervorragenden Ausblick fand ich genug Inspiration, um an meinem neusten Buch zu arbeiten, das ich wenige Wochen nach dieser Reise veröffentlichte. Doch auch mit seinem Strand konnte Saranda bei mir punkten. Dieser lag nur wenige Meter von meinem Apartment entfernt und so beschloss ich in meinen Arbeitspausen immer wieder, mich im glasklaren Wasser abkühlen und die Sonne zu genießen.

Saranda is a very vibrant city. It is still almost undiscovered by international tourism, but an extremely large number of Albanians spend their summer vacations here. So I would recommend you to avoid the time from June to August, unless you want to go on a party trip. In my opinion, September and October are the best months for a visit.

Saranda ist eine sehr belebte Stadt. Sie ist zwar vom internationalen Tourismus noch weitestgehend unentdeckt, aber extrem viele Albaner verbringen hier ihren Sommerurlaub. Ich würde euch also empfehlen, die Zeit von Juni bis August eher zu meiden, wenn ihr nicht gerade einen Party-Urlaub machen wollt. Meiner Meinung nach sind September und Oktober die besten Monate für einen Besuch.

Besides lots of beach bars and restaurants, Saranda is also a good base for some excursions. After a two-hour bus ride you will reach the fascinating old town of Gjirokastra. The ancient ruins of Butrint are only a half-hour bus ride away. Both Gjirokastra and Butrint are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and well worth a visit. The beautiful beach of Ksamil, which I will tell you about in a separate post, is also easily accessible by bus.

Neben jeder Menge Strandbars und Restaurants bietet sich Saranda auch als Basis für einige Ausflüge an. Nach einer zweistündigen Busfahrt erreicht ihr die faszinierende Altstadt von Gjirokastra. Die antike Ruinenstadt Butrint ist sogar nur eine halbstündige Busfahrt entfernt. Sowohl Gjirokastra, als auch Butrint gehören zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe und sind absolut sehenswert. Ebenfalls bequem mit dem Bus zu erreichen ist der paradiesisch schöne Strand von Ksamil, über den ich euch noch in einem eigenen Beitrag berichten werde.

A hike up the castle hill is also very worthwhile. Don't worry, it's not very steep and at a slow pace you'll be at the top after about an hour, if you start in the city center. Here you can enjoy an unforgettable view of the Albanian coast, the sea, the island of Corfu and, if you time it, the sunset. Directly in the ruins of the castle there is a restaurant where you can have a snack before walking back down.

Sehr lohnenswert ist auch ein Aufstieg auf den Burgberg. Keine Sorge, ihr müsst dafür nicht klettern und bei gemütlichem Tempo seid ihr schon nach ungefähr einer Stunde auf dem Gipfel, wenn ihr im Stadtzentrum startet. Hier erwartet euch ein unvergesslicher Ausblick auf die albanische Küste, das Meer, die Insel Korfu und, wenn ihr es zeitlich einplant, den Sonnenuntergang. Direkt in der Burgruine befindet sich ein Restaurant, in dem ihr euch stärken könnt, bevor ihr wieder nach unten spaziert.

I'm sure you can already tell that I'm a fan of Saranda. I felt very comfortable and safe in this gorgeous coastal town. It is also a real bargain compared to similar destinations in other European countries. I paid only 22€ per night for my apartment with the incredible view. For a meal in a restaurant you can plan about 5-8€. Even cheaper are the prices in the supermarkets. All the positive factors make Saranda a perfect vacation destination for me and also an ideal place to spend a few weeks or even months as a digital nomad.

Ihr merkt sicher schon, ich schwärme für Saranda. Ich fühlte mich sehr wohl und sicher in dieser traumhaften Küstenstadt. Außerdem ist sie ein wirkliches Schnäppchen im Vergleich mit ähnlichen Destinationen in anderen europäischen Ländern. Für mein Apartment mit dem unglaublichen Ausblick bezahlte ich nur 22€ pro Nacht. Für eine Mahlzeit im Restaurant könnt ihr ungefähr 5-8€ einplanen. Noch günstiger sind die Preise in den Supermärkten. All die positiven Faktoren machen Saranda für mich zu einer perfekten Urlaubsdestination und auch zu einem idealen Ort, um als Digitaler Nomade einige Wochen oder sogar Monate zu verbringen.
