Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about one of my biggest adventures this year. Ever since my first trip to Mexico in January last year, I wanted to visit the Nevado de Toluca and now the time had finally come. Never before had I been at an altitude of more than 4,000 meters. So I have to admit that I was a little nervous. But my curiosity and thirst for adventure were stronger and so my girlfriend and I set off early in the morning from Mexico City by car in the direction of the country's fourth highest mountain.
Hallo zusammen! Heute möchte ich euch von einem meiner größten Abenteuer in diesem Jahr berichten. Bereits seit meinem ersten Mexiko-Trip im Jänner letzten Jahres wollte ich den Nevado de Toluca besuchen und nun war es endlich soweit. Niemals zuvor war ich auf auf einer Seehöhe von mehr als 4.000 Metern gewesen. Dementsprechend muss ich zugeben, dass ich ein bisschen nervös war. Doch die Neugier und Abenteuerlust siegten und so starteten meine Freundin und ich früh morgens von Mexico City aus mit dem Auto in Richtung des vierthöchsten Berges des Landes.
We took the motorway, a winding country road and finally a narrow gravel path to the first checkpoint. Here we had to park our car in a car park and pay 50 pesos for the entrance fee and the parking fee for two people. We continued our journey on the back of a pick-up truck. Up to eleven people have to share the limited space before continuing upwards on a dusty, unpaved road. The journey costs another 50 pesos per person and takes about half an hour. We reached the car park on the summit region quite dusty.
Über die Autobahn, eine kurvenreiche Landstraße und letztendlich einen engen Schotterweg ging es zum ersten Checkpoint. Hier mussten wir unser Auto auf einem Parkplatz abstellen und 50 Pesos für den Eintritt und die Parkgebühr für zwei Personen bezahlen. Weiter ging es nur auf der Ladefläche eines Pickup-Trucks. Bis zu elf Personen müssen sich den knapp bemessenen Platz teilen, bevor es Auf einer staubigen, unasphaltierten Straße weiter nach oben geht. Die Fahrt kostet nochmals 50 Pesos pro Person und dauert ungefähr eine halbe Stunde. Ziemlich eingestaubt erreichten wir den Parkplatz auf der Gipfel-Region.
From this point, we could already enjoy incredible views of the surrounding area. Fortunately, there was also a toilet in one of the buildings. We were already at an altitude of around 4,000 meters and immediately felt the thin mountain air. When I crouched down to take a photo of a flower and stood up again, I immediately felt dizzy. The lack of oxygen was worse than I had imagined and I feared that I wouldn't make it to the crater. However, we decided to start the walk up very slowly and carefully to see how far we would get.
Von diesem Punkt aus konnten wir bereits unglaubliche Ausblicke auf die umliegende Umgebung genießen. Zum Glück befand sich in einem der Gebäude auch ein WC. Wir befanden uns bereits auf ungefähr 4.000 Metern und bekamen direkt die dünne Höhenluft zu spüren. Als ich mich niederhockte, um eine Blume zu fotografieren und wieder aufstand, wurde mir sofort schwindelig. Der Sauerstoffmangel war schlimmer, als ich ihn mir vorgestellt hatte und ich befürchtete schon, dass ich den Weg zum Krater nicht schaffen würde. Wir entschlossen und aber, den Fußmarsch nach oben ganz langsam und behutsam zu starten, um zu sehen, wie weit wir kommen würden.
I have to be honest, I've never experienced anything like it. On the one hand, I was overwhelmed by the views, the vegetation and the landscape, but on the other, I could hardly walk more than 20 meters at a time without stopping to catch my breath. The path to the crater was less than a kilometer long and never particularly steep, but it took all our strength. However, after what felt like an eternity, we finally arrived at the edge of the volcanic crater.
Ich muss euch ehrlich sagen, ich hatte soetwas noch nie erlebt. Einerseits war ich überwältigt von den Ausblicken, der Vegetation und der Landschaft, aber andererseits konnte ich kaum mehr als 20 Meter auf einmal zurücklegen, ohne stehenzubleiben und zu verschnaufen. Der Weg zum Krater war weniger als einen Kilometer lang und nie besonders steil, doch er kostete uns all unsere Kräfte. Nach einer gefühlten Ewigkeit kamen wir aber endlich am Rand des Vulkankraters an.
What a great feeling! We were proud and thrilled by the view of the huge crater of the inactive volcano. There are also two lakes in it, which we could admire from our position on the edge of the crater. We were now at 4,200 metres above sea level and tried to relax a little at this brilliant vantage point. Fortunately, we had some snacks and sugary drinks with us, which helped us to recharge our batteries.
Was für ein tolles Gefühl! Wir waren stolz und begeistert von der Aussicht auf den riesigen Krater des inaktiven Vulkans. Darin befinden sich auch zwei Seen, die wir von unserer Position am Kraterrand bewundern konnten. Wir befanden uns nun auf 4.200 Metern Seehöhe und versuchten uns an diesem genialen Aussichtspunkt etwas zu entspannen. Zum Glück hatten wir kleine Snacks und zuckerhaltige Getränke dabei, die uns wieder etwas aufbauten.
Nevertheless, we didn't have enough energy for the rest of the hike to the highest point or to one of the two lakes. Unfortunately, we are both anything but experienced mountain hikers. In addition, a huge, dark cloud was approaching and the wind was getting stronger. So we made our way back to the car park, which we managed with surprising ease. There we treated ourselves to a few crisps before taking the pick-up truck back to the lower car park and our car. Exhausted, but happy and proud, we finally set off on our journey home.
Für die weitere Wanderung auf den höchsten Punkt oder zu einem der beiden Seen reichten unsere Kräfte trotzdem nicht. Wir sind leider beide alles andere, als erfahrene Bergwanderer. Außerdem zog eine riesige, dunkle Wolke auf und der Wind wurde stärker. Also machten wir uns auf den Rückweg zum Parkplatz, den wir überraschend mühelos bewältigten. Dort gönnten wir uns noch paar Kartoffelchips, bevor es mit dem Pick-Up Truck wieder zurück zum unteren Parkplatz und unserem Auto ging. Erschöpft, aber glücklich und stolz traten wir schlussendlich die Heimreise an.
What a unique experience that was. We were still feeling the strain the next day, but the incredible landscape and breathtaking views were definitely worth it. If you're not a mountaineer either, but really want to get a taste of the real mountain air beyond 4,000 metres, then Nevado de Toluca is ideal for you. For me personally, this amazing place is definitely one of the top 3 day trips from Mexico City.
Was war das nur für ein einzigartiges Erlebnis. Wir fühlten die Strapazen noch am nächsten Tag, doch diese unglaubliche Landschaft und diese atemberaubenden Ausblicke waren es auf jeden Fall wert. Wenn ihr ebenfalls keine Bergsteiger seid, aber unbedingt mal wirkliche Höhenluft jenseits der 4.000 Meter schnuppern wollt, dann ist Nevado de Toluca ideal für euch. Für mich persönlich, ist dieser einzigartige Ort einer der Top3 Tagesausflüge von Mexiko City.
