Hello travellers,
When a man seems harsh to you, always remember that a strong fortress is not necessarily an enemy fortress. Nicolae Iorga
Many tourists visit the ruins of this fortress especially on weekends, as the access road to the fortress is almost entirely paved.
You guessed it, today we will make a trip together to the Fortress of Siria in the commune of Siria, Arad county, it was built on the Fortress Hill, at 496 m altitude, the ruins of the Fortress of Siria dominate the entire region today. The style of the fortress is Romanesque.
The fortress remained almost intact until 1784, when it was destroyed by Habsburg troops, today only ruins remain.
History of the fortress:
The Fortress of Siria dates back to the 13th century, with the oldest part of the fortress considered to be the keep, and the rest of the walls being added gradually until the 16th century.
Roman bricks, stamped with the sign of the 13th Geminian Legion, were also used to build the old parts of the fortress.
The fortress is also known thanks to the Roman lords and masters who played an important role in it.
A document from 1440 speaks of a certain Stefan Voda from Siria.
The ruins of these medieval fortresses and fortifications with a strategic role still exist today in several places in Arad county.
The documents of the time show that in 1331 the fortress already had a garrison led by a castellan. Roman bricks, stamped with the sign of the 13th Geminian Legion, were also used to build the old parts of the fortress.
In the years 1450-1500, the fortress of Șiria was under the rule of Prince Matei Corvin, where his uncle Mihail Sălăjanul was imprisoned.
In 1514 the Fortress of Siria was conquered by the rebellious peasants of Gheorghe Doja, and by the middle of the 16th century it was under Ottoman rule, being liberated only in 1595.
The fortress had a military securing role for the region, but also an economic one, as it was under the control of 110 villages.
The Outdoor Court, 36-38 m in size, has its walls almost intact. The thickness of each the wall is 130 cm, and they are 3.5 m high. To the north there is an opening that used to be one of the gates. Over the ditch at the front of the citadel there used to be a drawbridge.
The tower and surrounding wall are the oldest parts of the city. The tower with its ruined tip is 109 m long and 18 m wide. In front of the central body there is a protective wall at a distance of 2.5 m, enclosing a small courtyard . The surrounding wall has a length of 28 m, with input only from the west.
The moat located in front of the outer court used to have a depth of 10m and a width of 14m in some areas, but others were less steep.
Where can we find her?
The ruins of the medieval Fortress of Siria are located at a distance of 30 km from Arad county and 2 km east of the commune of Siria, at the top of the hill overlooking the road to the TV relay. The old fortress dates back to the 13th century.
Place legend,
There is another legend about the city of Siria, about a giant who had three daughters. Because of their height, no son would take them as wives. The giant had a dream that when the daughters built a fortress, suitors would come.
The giant immediately orders the construction of a three-towered fortress, just as the fortress of Siria actually had. When the construction was finished, an eagle sat on the ramparts and said, "Three knights will come to ask for the girl's hand.
But take care, if tonight someone asks you to open the gate of the fortress, do not let him in because he is a bad man."
Awakened from sleep by the beating at the fortress gate, the giant woke up to a band of thieves looting the fortress. The next day the three knights in shining armour arrived.
The virgins opened the gate for them and left with them. The giant woke up alone, and his tears of grief softened the walls of the city that had fallen into the abyss.

I have known this place for a very long time, but never managed to visit it and take many pictures here, two days ago being spring temperature I decided to go again to these ruins of the fortress and research very well about the fortress so I can put everything in a post that more people will enjoy.
Not being lucky enough to meet some paragliding enthusiasts was amazing, maybe next time.
Definitely next time :) So often the most interesting places are the ones you don't visit first (at least that was very often the case for me), I didn't have the places directly on my radar, but when I visited them, I found them I especially love them:)

That's a vast valley down there, almost endless!
Really interesting hike and the history of the place as well!
From the top of the hill you can see amazingly everything, as if it is endless.
Looks like an awesome spot. Great view from up there as well 👍

Thanks for your appreciation!
I love photos of this old fortress! Truly amazing!
One thing I miss in Canada are old castles and ruins. The city Trencin I am from back in Slovakia has an old Castel/fortress. And there is many more in my country just like the one you photographed.
Thank you so much for the kind words.
My pleasure @triplug!
I see what you meant, this reminds me of the one I climbed up to earlier here in Wales but this is more intact. Nice views though.
Thanks for stopping by!
