Lake Buhui an idyllic place in Banatul Montan in Caras-Severin county, Romania

Last weekend I had the opportunity to visit some amazing places in two towns Oravita and Anina in Caras-Severin county and in today's post I want to stop in an idyllic place in Banatul Montan and today we will hike together to Lake Buhui.

Let's see how we get to the oldest underground lake in Romania.

Lake Buhui is just a few kilometers away from the town of Anina, so we arrived here driving on the county road at a time we turned right near a cemetery and from there the GPS indicates a distance of 5km.

A few kilometers before reaching Lake Buhui we discovered another very interesting lake, Lake Minis, it seems that this area is rich in such artificial lakes.

Let's get back to our route to Lake Buhui.

These last few kilometres are on a forest road which is good enough for a normal car, but after about 4 km the road started to become a bit more impassable for our car, so we left it on the side of the road, here it seems someone else did the same.

We knew we had a bit to go, so we took the backpack (in the backpack we had the drone, a bottle of water and some food) and continued the trail through the forest.

A real relaxation the trail to the lake, from what I read here we will even find a dam.

I found a lot of informative panels about the fauna and flora here, another important thing for those who love fishing is to know that it is prohibited here.

Close to the town of Anina is the Buhui lake and dam covering an area of 1.6 square kilometres with a water depth of up to 27 metres. The dam is 8 metres thick at the top and about 15 metres thick at the bottom.
It is a colossus with a length of 60 m and accumulates a volume of 500,000 m3 of water and was built in 1908 in order to supply water to Anina.
The water flows underground for a length of 3217 m and then reaches the surface in the Buhui cave, from where a tunnel leads to Anina. Lake Buhui is the first underground reservoir and the oldest artificial lake in Romania.

Nearby and right on the lakeshore there are several places, seemingly created by nature for tourists, where they can revel in the natural beauty and feel as if time has stopped. If you follow the road that passes by the dam and the location of the Anina Forestry Office, you can discover a spring with cold, clear and pure water, such as can only exist in the mountains. Of course, the trails are varied, from here hikers can go on to visit several sites, the roads and trails are mostly marked. In the lake area you can find great scenery in all seasons, but especially in winter, when the mirror of water freezes partially or even completely.

Buhui Cottage, an ideal place for relaxation
On the lakeshore there is an Anina Forestry Office hut where tourists can stay overnight. Located at an altitude of 640 m, the Buhui hut offers accommodation and meals and is an ideal place for rest, fishing, sunbathing, water sports or hiking, children's playground, sports ground and many other recreational possibilities.
The surrounding forest is made up of various coniferous and deciduous species arranged in elevation zones. Since 1835, the local government has been developing the forest by creating conifer plantations: fir, spruce, larch, Douglas fir and black pine. The Douglas fir is a strong, evergreen tree that reaches a height of 100 m with a trunk thickness of 4 m.
Rich fauna
Numerous species of wildlife have thrived in this generous area, such as wolves, wild boar, foxes, deer, rabbits, squirrels, salamanders, and the horned adder lives on the limestone cliffs, and more recently the scorpion has been identified.

The route is very simple, you just have to follow the sign with white and blue stripes.

And yes, we had a few hours spent in the middle of nature and a few hours relaxing in the middle of the deciduous forest, so if you happen to be in the town of Anina, Caras-Severin county in Romania, don't forget this spectacular place.

I forgot to tell you a very important thing when you visit these places to be very careful because here lives one of the most dangerous species of snakes, the horned viper.

Always follow only marked routes.
