Greetings dear travelers from all over the world

Last year I heard about a spectacular place here in western Romania because it had something I had never seen before.

Yes, today I want to take you with me and visit the village of 1000 cellars, yes, you read well 1000 cellars, that caught my attention too.

I visited this village just last weekend, the village is called Sălacea and is located in Bihor county.

On the county road 191F that connects Marghita to Valea lui Mihai is Sălacea, a very old settlement, with archaeological evidence from the Bronze Age. Now inhabited mostly by Hungarians (over 92% of the population), the commune is made up of two villages, each with something unique to show: Sălacea and Otomani.

A drop of history. Sălacea was first documented in 1067, and in 1215 it appears in the chronicles under the name of Zolos. When the Hungarians settled here, there was already a Slavic community involved in the salt trade, hence the name of the village. At that time, salt was a very important commodity in medieval trade. In 1217, Sălacea had an important salt store and had become a flourishing trade fair.
Over time the salt trade declined. In modern times, viticulture and wine production became the main economic activities in the area. Today the village is known as the 'Village of 1000 cellars'. Whether they are made of brick or dug directly into the soft earth of the hillside, the 970 cellars form the 'cellar street'. The oldest of them dates back to 1803. The cellars are at least 30 meters long. The good wines made from the grapes produced in the Ier Valley are kept here clear, aromatic and cold (especially in summer).

Come with me for a walk down cellar street.
