We love Greece

in Pinmapple7 months ago

Yesterday we rented a car for a little drive around the second leg of Chalkidiki. The weather seemed to be a bit cloudy so it was a good moment for a bit of seightseeing.

the car rental company gave a few tips to definitely take a look, so we followed them :). What struck us is that we saw many small chapels on a pedestal along the roads. Considering the places where these were often located (in dangerous bends), we thought that these might be places where someone had had an accident, when we looked it up this turned out to be true.

It's unbelievable how many accidents apparently happen on that road. the chapels are used by family as a place of remembrance. If it was a fatal accident, there is a cross on it. Often people also burn a candle or an oil lamp in it.
At the resort I asked the bartender whether it is such a dangerous road or whether there are other reasons why so many accidents happen. He indicated that it is often a combination of alcohol in traffic and reckless driving... bizarre...
it was an adventurous ride. steep and sharp bends that, apparently, are not illuminated in the evening, many of the chapels are also located at sharp bends with precipices. You can imagine how that must have gone, very bad.

Besides all that bad, there were also very beautiful views.

it is a great area where you can see many islands in the distance. I once read that Greece consists of more than 6,000 islands, each larger than the other. too bizarre from a Dutch perspective :) we have 5 islands.

what we also noticed were the large amounts of beehives along the road, it turns out they have great local honey here. We will definitely taste it again.

Have a great day,

Cheers,
Peter

Despite the risks and tragic accidents, it's good to hear that you also found some beautiful views during your drive. Nature often offers a mix of beauty and danger, and it's essential to appreciate both aspects while being cautious and respectful of the environment

Oh wow, that is a bit scary. We have stuff like that along the highway's here. None of the roads in my area are quite that exciting though. Northern Michigan does though and the west side of the state as well. It looks like you are having a great time. That local honey sounds awesome. My friend keeps bees and he often gives me a jar.
