TBT: TAIWAN LANTERN FESTIVAL /

in Pinmapple3 years ago (edited)

There is a reason I prefer Taiwan more so than Hong Kong. The customs officers are way easygoing in Taiwan. At the very least, I can escape from endless intrusive interrogations. From the perspective of a female Southeast Asian, there are three possible explanations. Taiwanese have a healthier sense of self-esteem than most East Asians. Since all males of qualified ages in Taiwan are required to join the military conscription, they are very confident at retaining their jobs. Moreover, due to the availability of countless beautiful Taiwanese women, it was unnecessary for them to worry about competition or female foreigners resorting to prostitution.

One of the annual festivals I had the pleasure of attending is the Taiwan Lantern Festival. As it tends to change location every year so it's best to confirm with the tourism board before going there. Lantern Festival celebrations exist since the Tang dynasty, the golden age of the Chinese civilization. The official language during the Tang dynasty was neither Mandarin nor Cantonese but the Hokkien dialect.

Taiwan Lantern Festival began since the year 1990. Many lantern artisans showcase their artworks at this festival. It will be interesting to learn more about lantern making from them one day. Aside from observing lanterns, there were numerous participating food vendors for visitors to try out different varieties of Taiwanese snacks during the festival. Hunger was simply inconceivable. A truly wonderful experience of the five senses.

Some of my favorite lantern artworks were Peking Opera, Journey to the West, and Dragon Gate. I love the fine details put into creating all the masks in Peking opera. Too bad I was unable to obtain a good picture of "Journey to the West" lantern but that was one of the greatest literary classics published during the Ming dynasty. Dragon Gate was the lantern with a golden carp turning into a dragon. In the past, the dragon gate used to be a very auspicious symbol for scholars attempting to sit for the imperial exams. If the carp was able to successfully leaped over a waterfall, it will be transformed into a powerful dragon. The hidden meaning is if a scholar manages to overcome obstacles, he will become a high-ranking official.

Some lantern artworks were inspired by Japanese animation characters such as Hello Kitty and Totoro. China and Japan used to be on good diplomatic terms during the Tang dynasty. In fact, the well-known Japanese literary masterpiece, "The Tale of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu was inspired by noble consort Yang Guifei. I was rather amused by the minion lantern and some Line emojis lanterns on display. A festival with an interesting blend of contemporaries and classics. Hopefully, I will get to return to this festival one day to spot as well as to record the differences or interpretations in artwork selections. The thoughts of lanterns that will be popular in the future make me excited.

This was in Taichung? When did you go? I was living out there since 2016 since I returned to UK last year. Still waiting to go back whenever they open up the border.

These pictures were taken in 2015. Hopefully, the borders will open up soon!
