Town of Manteigas. Surrounded by grandiose landscapes and forests, and located in the Serra da Estrela mountain range, and in the middle of the Zêzere River glacier, this very quiet town, with its low houses and low population density, offers a pleasant surprise to anyone looking for it, whether for a stroll or just by chance.
Today, I'd like to share a set of photos I took on Sunday afternoon, December 3, 2024, after walking around Penhas Douradas all morning (you can see my post here).
Vila de Manteigas. Rodeada de grandiosas paisagens e florestações, e localizada na cadeia montanhosa da Serra da Estrela, e em pleno glaciar do rio Zêzere, esta localidade bem pacata, de casas baixas, e de reduzida densidade populacional, dá-se a conhecer, a quem a procura, quer por passeio, quer apenas por mero acaso, uma agradável surpresa.
Hoje, quer aqui partilhar um conjunto de fotos que eu tirei, na tarde de Domingo, dia 3 de Dezembro de 2024, após ter andado a passear a manhã toda pelas Penhas Douradas (podem ver a minha publicação aqui).
Arriving in the town via Rua de Santa Luzia, I parked very close to the Jardim do Valazedo, where we found a bronze bust erected in memory of the manteiguense Lieutenant Colonel Biscaia Rabaça.
Chegando à vila pela Rua de Santa Luzia, estacionei bem perto de do Jardim do Valazedo, onde encontramos um busto em bronze erguido em memória do manteiguense Tenente Coronel Biscaia Rabaça.
As I'd spent part of the morning discovering the wilder areas of the upper quotas, my hunger was already getting a bit strong... and even before I set out to discover this little village, I decided to sit down and eat an apple I'd kept in my backpack. Surprisingly, a sweet black kitten approached me and, without any shame or embarrassment, took hold of my backpack and just wanted me to pet her... Isn't she just adorable? I was completely surrendered. I love black cats!
Como tinha andado parte da manhã a descobrir as zonas mais selvagens das quotas superiores, a fome já apertava um pouco... e ainda antes de me colocar a descobrir esta pequena vila, decidi sentar-me para comer uma maçã que tinha guardada na minha mochila. Eis que surpreendentemente, uma doce gatinha negra se aproximou de mim, e sem qualquer pudor ou vergonha, se abeirou da minha mochila, e procurou apenas que eu lhe fizesse umas festas... Não é simplesmente adorável? Eu fiquei completamente rendido. Adoro gatos pretos!
Right next to where I left the car was a beautiful mural, painted with the Transhumance theme in mind. And the theme, the precision of the brushstrokes, and the details and colors used are simply fantastic! Anyone who passes by is not indifferent either to its size or to the elements used to color this wall! Bem perto de onde deixei o carro, estava um belo mural, pintado com o tema da Transumância em mente. E é simplesmente fantástico o tema, a precisão das pinceladas, e os pormenores e cores usadas! I decided to take the short route through the town, PR3 MTG, because it was Sunday and past lunchtime and there was hardly anyone to be seen, and with the Christmas festivities approaching, anyone who was passing through should be with their family or resting by a nice fireplace.
Decidi fazer a pequena rota da vila, PR3 MTG, pois como era Domingo, e já passava da hora de almoço, praticamente não se via vivalma, e com a proximidade das festividades do Natal, quem por estes lados estava de passagem, deveria estar junto da família, ou a descansar perto de uma agradável lareira.
The route passed through the central part of life, and as in any land in my Portugal, there can't fail to be a commercial establishment that adopts the same designation of "Central"! You can ask all the Portuguese you know... A reality! But I don't think it's unique, I believe that in other countries the same thing happens with the names of cafés and restaurants in the center of towns.
A rota passava pela parte central da vida, e como em qualquer terra do meu Portugal, não pode deixar de haver um estabelecimento comercial que adopte essa mesma designação de "Central"! Podem perguntar a todos os portugueses que conhecem... Uma realidade! Mas acho que não deve um caso único, acredito que nos outros países o mesmo aconteça com os nomes dos cafés e restaurantes que se encontram no centro das povoações.
And this is a place I recommend! I came here for lunch a day later, after doing one of the most beautiful hiking trails, the Faias de São Lourenço, and I had a very good lunch, at a very reasonable price for the quality and comfort of the food I had!
E este é um sítio que recomendo! Vim cá almoçar um dia mais tarde, depois de fazer um dos trilhos pedestres mais bonitos, as Faias de São Lourenço, e almocei muito bem, a um preço muito razoável para a qualidade e conforto da comida que comi!
I then passed by the Bandstand of São Pedro de Manteigas, and the Church of São Pedro. Although the Eucharist had already taken place before lunch, I managed to get inside, and as there was still a faithful praying, I was able to take a photo of the interior, without using a flash. It didn't turn out very well, but it could have been worse, that's for sure.
Passei depois pelo Coreto de São Pedro de Manteigas, e pela Igreja de São Pedro. Apesar de Eucaristia já ter acontecido antes de almoço, consegui entrar, e como estava ainda um fiel a orar, consegui tirar uma fotografia do seu interior, sem usar flash. Não ficou muito bem, mas poderia ter ficado pior, é um facto.
Continuei o caminho e passei por algumas casas bem coloridas, com portadas vermelhas, e os intervalos das pedras caiado. A varanda de ferro pintada de branco dá um ar da sua graça a quem por ali passa.
I continued on my way and passed some very colorful houses, with red shutters and whitewashed stone recesses. The white-painted iron balcony is a sight to behold.
O Cemitério fica logo em baixo, e é possível ver que pela sua dimensão, esta localidade tem um baixo índice demográfico.
The cemetery is just below, and you can see that, given its size, this town has a low population index.
Convergi para a estrada logo a baixo, e tomei o caminho em direcção à Granja.
I turned onto the road just below and took the road towards Granja.
The holly trees were already showing their grace and giving off a very Christmassy air, accompanied by an almost magical mist that could be seen covering part of the town.
As pernadas bem aprumadas do azevinho, davam já um ar da sua graça e atribuíam um ar bem Natalício, acompanhadas por uma neblina quase mágica, que se fazia ver a cobrir parte da vila.
I passed by the Valentine's Fountain, where I was inspired... and dreamed that maybe one day something as simple and loving as what is described in the simple proza of this season might happen to me!
Passei pela fonte dos Namorados, onde me inspirei.. e sonhei que talvez um dia me possa acontecer algo tão simples e amoroso como o que é descrito na proza simples desta quadra!

We'll get married later

Bebemos, gostamos
Casamos depois
Along the way, I still had the chance to see a father and son happily walking their dog.
Ao longo do caminho ainda tive a oportunidade de ver pai e filho alegremente a passear o seu cão.
Among the houses furthest from the center, the isolation is better, and the beauty of the stone walls themselves... bare and exposed. All a splendor of simplicity and robustness.
The entrances to the houses are often decorated with pots of flowering plants, which at this time of year are not at their best...
Por entre as casas mais distantes do centro, melhor é o isolamento, e a beleza das paredes das próprias pedras... nuas, e expostas. Todo um esplendor de simplicidade e robustez.
As entradas das casas, comumente são ornamentadas com vasos com plantas floridas, que nesta altura do ano, não se apresentam nas suas melhores vestes...
The stone Roman roads flanked by walls covered in lush moss are such pleasant company for a Sunday afternoon, don't you agree?
Os caminhos romanos, de pedra, ladeados por muros cobertos de verdejante musgo são tão agradáveis companhia para uma tarde de Domingo, não concordam?
And the view of the town in the distance, shrouded in an almost magical, scenic mist, makes everything even better!
E a vista da vila, à distância, envolta numa neblina quase mágica, e cénica, torna tudo ainda melhor!
The olive trees, laden with fruit, are waiting to be picked and then crushed to produce the true yellow gold... excellent olive oil!
As oliveiras, carregadas, esperam para que sejam apanhadas seus precisos frutos, para depois serem esmagados para produzir o verdeiro ouro amarelo... o excelente azeite!
Back in the village, I'm greeted by a group of cats on a lawn chair, basking in the discreet and shy rays of the sun. Can you see the three cats? Once again, a black kitten was part of the “bouquet”, can you see it?
De volta a entrar na povoação, eis que sou recebido por um conjunto de gatos, que se dispõem numa cadeira de jardim, a apanhar os discretos e tímidos raios de sol. Conseguem ver os três gatos? Mais uma vez, um gatinho preto fazia parte do "bouquet", conseguem-no ver?
Passing the GNR post, we reached the town center, where I had parked the car.
Passando o posto da GNR chegamos ao centro da vila, onde eu deixei o carro estacionado.
