The Type Of Posts We Expect And Curate

As many of you may know we curate Comedy Open Mic posts to @OCD and we have previously talked about word counts and uses of GIFS. As far as GIFs go, it seems that some people completely missed the point and decided to just replace them with funny pictures from Pixabay. That's not the point. The point was to put the focus on the text.

The same thing can be said about the use of emojis, and even adding "lol", "haha", and terms of that sort. There are posts where there are literally pictures of laughing people or emojis stuck in the middle. Once again, the main reason behind the GIF talk was to shift the focus on the written words or videos, not that there have been any of the latter lately.

Another thing we feel the need to bring up again is the word count debate as even some of the people who understood the issue with comedy posts in terms of word counts seem to have unlearned it slowly.

Comedyopenmic_divider.png

Having posts with 2 paragraphs serving as an introductory and 1 paragraph as a conclusion doesn't add anything to the word count when they don't have any punchlines and jokes. There are many posts that really come down to 50 words of comedy and the rest can easily be removed and it wouldn't affect the posts a bit.

Comedyopenmic_divider.png

To summarize this point, if you're doing an entire post just to have one or two jokes in the middle, then don't expect curation. And if you're aiming to add empty paragraphs in the middle just to meet the word count, don't be surprised if your post is muted even if it is technically 300 words long.

We mentioned in a post this before, but again, the rules in the community remain the same as @captaincryptic expressed his willingness to support funny posts on this community more than once if you use his community tag [HIVE-155986]. But, there are communities like LOLZ's Fun House and MemeHive that might be more suited for many of the posts that have been posted here lately as we are looking for comedy posts and not posts that are funny. The difference will be found below.

Funny and comedy don't mean the same thing despite what some might think.

In terms of movies, funny is The Hulk smashing around Loki in the 2012 Avengers movie like the video below

However, you would never describe the movie as a comedy. However, you might call The Hangover a comedy movie, because it is. The same thing applies to posts, including a funny instance in the middle doesn't make the post a comedic post. Just a post with a funny instance.

We assume it would be rude to highlight the bad examples, that's why we're going to highlight the good examples. Those would be:

Not only picked because of the length of the post but both provided enough jokes and punchlines in the middle to go along with the theme of what they're doing. Their posts weren't made up of dry explanation paragraphs, one joke, and then concluding paragraphs.

Comedyopenmic_divider.png

It would be beneficial for the posters to get straight to the point. A great example of that working out even in posts that are short are @diebitch's posts overall, but especially the latest one Mombie - The mommy Zombie.

She cut right into the post, created the parody scene, and created a comedic and smooth post.

The least that could happen is if a post is going to have long, dry paragraphs ahead of the funny, then at least it needs to have long funny parts. Otherwise, it feels like someone calling and inviting you over for a drink on their treat, and after your effort, it turns out that drink is water.

We will have more newsletters in the future aimed at helping people write comedy posts better, teach the basics, and maybe break down jokes. We also haven't forgotten about the comment contest, we're just sorting out the prizes.

That's it for today's newsletter. If you have any follow-ups or questions, feel free to comment below.

Thank you so much for the mention 🙌🏻
I'm very honored.
Here's to quality posts and growing this beautiful community 🥂

Better a slow growth with quality posts than a fast one with just rubbish

Well explained, I hope there would be improvements after... Looking forward to that.

Well done Sir for this, it's very much needed

Hello, I hope to catch all the suggestions, I think I will try to open the microphone and surely with my face I will have a good rating and finally I can buy a house for the old abandoned people. Thank you for bringing these recommendations

Well, they will not understand me anyway, I do not master the language, and when I say that I do not master it is not because of the language ha,ha,ha,ha, I really do not master it, I speak up to my elbows, so I do not answer. Well, I will still write everything and I will put deepL translator

Funny. Smooth moves structuring this newsletter @amirtheawesome1. A couple hundred word build-up for one punchline is a perfect example of what not to do.

..it feels like someone calling and inviting you over for a drink on their treat, and after your effort, it turns out that drink is water.

Thank you! Some people have been treating our community like a garbage dump for a while now. It seems like a fair minimum requirement to be respected enough to have relevant posts only shared here.

Thanks for the mention. Just read the simp post from @writermaximus 😂 😂

😂😂😂
I appreciate this
Thank you so much 💙

Was happy to. Too bad the people the post was intended for didn't even bother reading it 😅

Wow... It seems comedy is not just what we think it to be. You have explained it better the way it supposed to be.
I hope to change and write something just like what you just explained.

Thank a lot.

Thank you for the info, hey, I'm curious to know, are dark jokes allowed? I know they can seem offensive something, okay most times

Yes, they are allowed.

Sweet😅😅
