At a point during my first pregnancy, licking sand became more sweet than eating food for me. Can you imagine this weird behavior? Ordinarily, I can't imagine licking sand, but I couldn't just control the craving for those periods. I could dig the ground just to get clean sand, lick it, and be happy! You know, yesterday, something happened, and my mind flashed back to those days while I was pregnant and how I stressed this young man called my husband. Hahaha, I really need some beating in my life. It takes a patient man to tolerate some weird behaviors most pregnant women exhibit while on the joinery. To be frank, some of them are just so annoying, but you get to wear patience like a garment until the journey is over!
The pregnant me
No two pregnancies are actually the same! Most of my weird behaviors were more pronounced in my first pregnancy, and reflecting on that just made me laugh at myself. One of the days, I remember perceiving a nice aroma of food from my neighbor. Oh boy, can you believe that I couldn't control the urge to eat whatever it was that my neighbor was preparing? I tried anyway, but my longer throat looks uncontrollable those days. Please don't look at me with one kind of eye, lolz. I am never like this; pregnancy caused it for sure 😃 I am that nkem that has self-control, a, very disciplined being , hahaha.. until pregnancy put me in a condition of lack of self-control. Guess what I did? Hmmmm, With a smiling face, I knocked at my neighbor's door and greeted her verryyy well, then inquired aboutn what she was preparing that couldn't allow my nose to receive some breathing space. This neighbor of mine is also a funny being;, she said, "This pregnant woman, what's your trouble with your unborn baby this afternoon?lolz, I know what you want because I was once in your shoes.,Just sit in the living room and I will help to quench your cravings". Lolz, that settles it; I didn't need to explain more.,Shortly, she served me hot fried rice.,Awwwwww. This was the same food I prepared the previous day in my home but hated to eat it. Then, whatever is being prepared by another person becomes my favorite! I'm glad my neighbor saved the day!
Most times, I will just crave a particular meal and then call on my husband to buy the ingredients in the market for me to prepare and eat. After preparing the meal, it's either I see it as a smelling meal or a bitter meal, I will abandon it and plead with him to take me to an eatery. Now, this is weird and annoying. My husband got pissed off with my behavior those days. I was just giving him some doses of trouble, but it wasn't intentional, please.
There's also this native apple that I loved so much to eat those days.
I can wake up at midnight to look for some I kept in the freezer. One night, I needed to eat this apple so badly, but it was nowhere to be found around the house. Hmmmm, another trouble was calling on this young dude called my husband. I pity him, Shaa, lolz. It was already 7:30 p.m., and the possibility of getting this native apple in the market is too low, yet I was shedding crocodile tears, dragging my husband to go to the market with me using a torch light so we could do an ultimate search for those market sellers selling the native apple. Oh no! Hahaha, my husband said that this is the height of it. How do I expect him to start going to the market by that time of the night just for apples? Nkem here doesn't want to hear from his side. My body system had already adjusted to eating that apple, and I didn't stop making trouble until he accepted my plea and we headed to the market. Oh God, I can't believe that I did all of this now that I am writing about it. At last, we succeeded that night in getting the apple, and I felt satisfied.
On one of my antenatal visits, I had a chi-chat with other pregnant women, and I found out that I wasn't alone in this weird behavior. Most women were literally like me. So when you watch some Nigerian movies showing some of this funny behavior from some pregnant women, they are not far from the truth. It actually happens, and I am a typical example in this case.
Finally craving a roasted catfish that cost a lot, then getting it, all to abandon it because I feel it smells bad, was another weird thing I did, and now I am wishing that one good Samaritan could present such a delicacy for me right now to devour without those hilarious excuses anymore, lolz!

It's normal to crave certain foods if you are pregnant.
Pregnancy makes one smell and taste way better too. The result: food and drinks taste better or awful.
Each pregnancy, except for the first two, I craved for something. One child spaghetti bolgnaise (I don't like this food) but it rarely tasted good only at one restaurant (and it left unannounced). Interesting is that the child I gave birth to is fond of spaghetti, pizza and lasagne while I don't eat them.
While you are sand? It's interesting. Perhaps the feeling of clean sand in your mouth (like others have with sugar) or to get rid of a "dirty taste" in your mouth, or perhaps it is trying tastes. I know it is what I did and still do today. I miss a certain kind of taste. Most food does not taste great at all.
Btw little children frequently eat sand, ask a toddler why.
