Hey, given at least half of my strips feature or talk about D&D in one way or another, it would be surprising if I did NOT do a special one-off strip to honor of the release of the movie "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves"!

Well to be honest, I had considered doing a strip like this two weeks earlier. But I wanted to see the movie first before I committed to it. Why, you ask? Let's just say seeing the first attempt at a Dungeons & Dragons movie more than two decades ago has left mental scars that persist to this day. We're talking a "3.6 out of 10 rating on IMDB" level of awful. The only way to TRY to heal the pain is to re-watch it and make a drinking game out of it in the hope that some new fun drunk memories can replace the original ones... 😏

Anyway, thankfully the new one was entertaining and not at all like the old one. I was pleasantly surprised that they used some practical animatronic effects instead going overboard with CGI for everything (one of the many terrible elements of the first D&D movie was the horrid quality CGI in many places). And it didn't hurt that they had some good actors for this one, either.

As for the strip, it was a nice bit of fortune that most of the movie characters ended up being fairly appropriate for our crew here, given the characters they play in their own game. Dan the bard, Pete the armored warrior, Jen the druid, and Ash the magician. Even Roscoe the alien is dressed as a halfling, one that plays a quirky little cameo part in the movie. Which leaves Cam as the odd one out. Yes, Cam could have played Forge the rogue, which would have better matched his D&D character. But he wanted to dress as the barbarian woman. Probably better not to ask... 😁

I have heard good things about the movie, so I may need to check it out. I've not been to the cinema in a while. Happy to hear you enjoyed it.

!LOLZ

I thought it was worth the price of the ticket, but it's not in 3D or anything so you wouldn't miss out too much if you waited until it was on streaming services or what not.

What do you call bad fruits and vegetables?

I think it is worth a night out.

Love the strip today.
The movie was good and this captures the fan base well.

The upside of watching movies in Mongolia is that it's much cheaper. The downside is that you don't see the same level of cosplay enthusiasm among moviegoers at the opening nights as you do in the US... 😏

I think the first two D&D movies are perfect... For watching with fellow players who all make fun of them the whole time. I don't know if I'll bother seeing the new one. I am basically boycotting WotC and GW due to both game companies treating their fans like garbage lately.

Exactly! The first D&D movies are mostly good only for alcohol-fueled mockery. 😏

I've heard a bit about certain plans by WotC on the future of D&D, and yeah I don't like what I've heard either (like their attempted change to the OGL, and doing away with the half-races). I'm hoping more sensible and less woke heads prevail there (though I'm not counting on it). But regardless, the movie seemed to be free of any woke nonsense... I suspect it's because the writers/directors are more 'old-school' gamers like ourselves. But I totally get balking at throwing any money towards WotC given their attitude.

I was lucky enough to see the movie on a preview night, and was soooo tempted to post to you all about it. The bard! It got me thinking of you. 😁

I laughed my ass off through the whole movie. My son tried to determine what everyone's stats were. I laughed even harder.

Yup, the bard gets even less respect than Rodney Dangerfield... as it should be! (j/k) 😉
