Tunnel Warfare: An Illustrated Story of Resistance

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the invading Japanese forces faced fierce resistance, not only from the regular Chinese army but also from guerrilla forces operating behind enemy lines. These groups, often composed of local villagers, developed innovative tactics to fight a technologically superior enemy. This story is set in the central Hebei province, a crucial resistance base, and highlights one of the most famous of these tactics: tunnel warfare.

During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Japanese invaders launched the brutal "May First Grand Sweep" against our anti-Japanese base in central Hebei. They intended to extinguish the flames of resistance with the inhumane "Three Alls Policy" (kill all, burn all, loot all). To crush this aggressive plot, the soldiers and civilians of our base area, under the leadership of the Party and Chairman Mao, fought for themselves and their villages. Using a network of tunnels that connected every house and every village, they engaged in a clever struggle against the Japanese invaders. Everywhere, there were vengeful traps, broadswords, spears, and guns. Under the elusive and powerful attacks of our soldiers and civilians, the Japanese invaders were finally drowned in the vast ocean of a people's war.
