Y es del Virus del Papiloma Humano (VPH) el causante de la infección de transmisión sexual (ITS) más común a nivel mundial.
Es bueno saber amigos que de este virus existen más de 200 tipos diferentes y aproximadamente 40 de ellos afectan la región anogenital.
La transmisión se produce predominantemente a través del contacto sexual piel con piel, y es importante destacar que el uso correcto del preservativo reduce, pero no elimina por completo, el riesgo de contagio, ya que el virus puede estar en áreas no cubiertas por el condón.
Las infecciones por VPH se clasifican en dos grandes grupos según su potencial de causar cáncer y estas son:
VPH de bajo riesgo (no oncogénicos): son 6 cepas que no causan cáncer pero son responsables de las verrugas genitales (condilomas acuminados) y de alteraciones benignas en el cuello uterino.
VPH de alto riesgo (oncogénicos): este grupo incluye al menos 14 tipos de VPH, siendo los tipos 16 y 18 los de mayor riesgo, responsables de aproximadamente el 70% de todos los casos de cáncer de cuello uterino. Estos virus tienen la capacidad de interferir con el ciclo celular normal y, si la infección persiste durante años, puede conducir a cambios precancerosos que, sin tratamiento, pueden evolucionar a cáncer.
La relación causal entre la infección persistente por VPH de alto riesgo y el cáncer de cuello uterino está absolutamente establecida por la ciencia. De hecho, este cáncer es casi en un 100% prevenible. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), el cáncer de cuello uterino es el cuarto cáncer más frecuente en las mujeres a nivel mundial. Se estima que cada año se diagnostican más de 600,000 nuevos casos y fallecen alrededor de 350,000 mujeres por esta enfermedad, siendo la incidencia y mortalidad desproporcionadamente más altas en países de ingresos bajos y medios. Estas cifras subrayan la importancia crítica de las estrategias de prevención y diagnóstico precoz.

Es necesario que tengan conocimiento que la mayoría de las personas sexualmente activas se infectarán con al menos un tipo de VPH en algún momento de su vida. En la gran mayoría de los casos, el sistema inmunológico eliminará la infección de forma natural en un plazo de uno o dos años sin causar ningún problema de salud.
Todos sabemos que la verdadera medicina es la preventiva, y esta prevención se basa en dos pilares fundamentales:
Vacunación: Las vacunas contra el VPH son seguras, eficaces y representan la herramienta principal para prevenir las infecciones por los tipos de VPH más comunes incluidos en las vacunas. Se recomienda administrarla antes del inicio de la vida sexual.
Detección Temprana: Para las mujeres, la realización periódica de pruebas de cribado es esencial, ya que permite identificar las lesiones precancerosas antes de que se conviertan en cáncer.
Y aquí mujeres la prevención que por programa se realiza a nivel mundial en los sistemas de salud pública.
La citología vaginal, conocida comúnmente como prueba de Papanicolau, es un procedimiento sencillo y rápido que permite examinar las células del cuello uterino en busca de anomalías. Es la piedra angular del diagnóstico citológico y ha sido fundamental en la reducción de la mortalidad por cáncer de cuello uterino en las últimas décadas. Cuando el Papanicolau detecta cambios anormales, el médico puede recomendar pruebas más específicas, como la prueba de VPH o una colposcopia, para obtener una visión ampliada del cuello uterino y, si es necesario, tomar una biopsia.
Casi nos vamos despidiendo no sin antes tocar el tema clave en cada publicación y es recordar que es crucial comprender que solo un médico está capacitado para interpretar los resultados de estas pruebas, realizar un diagnóstico preciso y, en caso de ser necesario, determinar el plan de seguimiento o tratamiento más adecuado para cada situación. Ante cualquier duda, resultado anormal o la presencia de síntomas, es imperativo acudir al médico. La automedicación o seguir consejos no profesionales puede tener consecuencias graves para la salud. When a Pap smear detects abnormal changes, the doctor may recommend more specific tests, such as an HPV test or a colposcopy, to get a magnified view of the cervix and, if necessary, take a biopsy.

Self-medication or following non-professional advice can have serious consequences for your health. Regular gynecological check-ups are not a luxury; they are a necessity.
