Октант - кутомірний інструмент, основною частиною якого є дуга, що дорівнює 1/8 кола, розділена на градуси і на частини градуса. По своєму устрою октант нагадує секстант. За допомогою октанта можна вимірювати кути завбільшки до 90°, а в деяких більш нових конструкціях — і значно більші кути (115—130°). У минулому цей інструмент широко використовувався в морехідній астрономії і при океанографічних дослідженнях, але зараз уже застарів і не застосовується. За ту допомогу, яку прилад надавав мореплавцям та мандрівникам, він і потрапив на небо.
