The indomitable Chernihiv city and the region raised real warriors of its land. And among them is my colleague Serhiy, who never thought that he would have to take up arms and fight against the hated russian occupiers.
Since 2013, Serhiy has been working in the construction hypermarket of Chernihiv as a leading specialist of the comprehensive sales department. On the morning of February 24, 2022, like all Ukrainians, he was going to work, but his plans changed when Chernihiv Oblast began to be shelled from the sky.
Незламна Чернігівщина виростила справжніх воїнів своєї землі. І серед них мій колега, Сергій, який ніколи не думав, що йому доведеться взяти в руки зброю і воювати з ненависними російськими окупантами.
З 2013 року Сергій працював в будівельно-господарському гіпермаркеті Чернігова провідним фахівцем відділу комплексних продажів. Зранку, 24 лютого 2022, як і всі українці, збирався на роботу, але плани змінились, коли Чернігівщину почали обстрілювати з неба.
Serhiy decided what he should do immediately — of course, to protect the Motherland from the enemy. On the same day, he joined the local territorial defense.
"You know, my wife, children, parents, sister with her family, my neighbors and friends — they all needed protection. And who should have protected them, if not us, their husbands, sons, brothers?", — Serhiy says.
Also, the defender began to actively help people and the military. For example, a group of border guards from Sumy Oblast was sent to the defense of Chernihiv. The boys arrived with only weapons, without any personal belongings. And, thanks to Serhiy's assistance, all servicemen of the unit were provided with essential items and hygiene products.
Сергій одразу визначився, чим має зайнятися – звичайно, захищати Вітчизну від ворога. Того ж дня він вступив у місцеву територіальну оборону.
"Ви розумієте, моя дружина, діти, батьки, сестра з сім’єю, мої сусіди і друзі – усі вони потребували захисту. А хто їх мав захистити, якщо не ми – їхні чоловіки, сини, брати?" — каже Сергій.
Також захисник став активно допомагати людям та військовим. Наприклад, на оборону Чернігова була перекинута рота прикордонників з Сумщини. Хлопці приїхали лише зі зброєю, без будь-яких особистих речей. І, дякуючи сприянню Сергія, всі військовослужбовці підрозділу були забезпечені предметами першої необхідності та засобами гігієни.
Ordinary people also needed help. 600 residents of Chernihiv found shelter in one of the city's Orthodox churches. When the air raids on the city became continuous, people came to the church. The abbot opened the gate and several hundred of residents settled in the lower rooms of the church. Children, women, elderly people. It was necessary to find food, water, medicine, and arrange sleeping places for them.
Serhiy's relatives came to help him and the abbot. The sister, a doctor by profession, treated people, especially old women who needed her help. She treated Serhiy's comrades who having visited frontline & returned from the trenches with colds and flu.
Потребували допомоги і звичайні люди. В одному з православних храмів міста знайшли прихисток 600 жителів Чернігова. Коли авіанальоти на місто стали безперервними, люди прийшли до церкви. Настоятель відчинив браму і в нижніх приміщеннях храму розмістились кількасот чернігівчан. Діти, жінки, люди похилого віку. Для них потрібно було знайти їжу, воду, ліки, облаштувати спальні місця. На допомогу Сергію та настоятелю прийшли його ж рідні. Сестра, лікар за фахом, лікувала людей, особливо її допомоги потребували старенькі. Лікувала побратимів Сергія, які, «побувавши на нулі», повертались з окопів з застудою і грипом.
It was very cold then. The defender's parents were cooking. And Serhiy, together with volunteers, often under heavy fire, helped to get food, medicine and other necessary things.
Тоді було дуже холодно. Батьки захисника готували їжу. А Сергій разом з волонтерами, часто під шквальними обстрілами, допомагав діставати продукти харчування, ліки та інші необхідні речі.
After the lifting of the siege of Chernihiv, Serhiy continues his service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"The enemy does not sleep," – says our defender. "Constant raids of by the diversionists, sweeps and other operations require maximum concentration and courage. Together with my colleague Dmytro, we are now carrying out combat missions on the border."
Після зняття облоги Чернігова Сергій продовжує свою службу в ЗСУ.
"Ворог не спить, — каже наш захисник. — Постійні вилазки ДРГ, зачистки та інші операції вимагають максимальної концентрації та зосередженості, відваги та сміливості. Разом з колегою Дмитром ми зараз виконуємо бойові завдання на кордоні".
"Is there fear?", – I asked Serhiy. The answer is expected: "Of course there is, as in every normal person. But fear must be managed and controlled. I have no moral right in front of children to be afraid and panic. After all, our confidence in Victory is the foundation of the Victory. And we must get it, we will get it."
"Чи є страх?", — запитую Сергія. Відповідь очікувана: "Звичайно є, як і в кожної нормальної людини. Але страх має бути керованим і контрольованим. Я не маю морального права перед дітьми боятися і панікувати. Адже наша впевненість у Перемозі є фундаментом цієї ж Перемоги. І ми її обов’язково здобудемо".
