On May 26, 2014, information about the cancellation of all flights appeared on the board of Donetsk International Airport. On the same day, at 07:24 am, a similar message appeared on their official Twitter account. That day saw the protracted defence of the building, which lasted 242 days. Just think of a term. For example, the average duration of pregnancy in women is 268 days. And here, for almost the same period, people defended the airport and repulsed separatist attacks. It is not for nothing that Russian propaganda has begun to spread the myth that it is not people but cyborgs who are fighting on the territory of the Donetsk International Airport. The cyborgs survived - the concrete did not survive.
26 травня 2014 року на табло міжнародного аеропорту "Донецьк" з'явилась інформація про скасування всіх рейсів. Того ж дня, о 07:24 ранку подібне повідомлення з'явилось на їхньому офіцйному твіттер акаунті. Того дня розпочалась затяжна оборона цієї будівлі, котра протривала 242 дні. Просто вдумайтесь який це термін. Для прикладу, середня тривалість вагітності в жінки триває 268 днів. А тут практично такий же термін люди обороняли аеропорт та відбивали напади сепаратистів. Не дарма в російській пропаганді почали розповсюджувати міф, що на території ДАП воюють не люди, а кіборги. Кіборги витримали - не витримав бетон.
Today, on the anniversary of the beginning of this story, I will briefly talk about the airport itself, as well as the key moments of this battle lasting almost an eternity.
Сьогодні, в річницю початку цієї історії я коротко розповім про сам аеропорт, а також про ключові моменти цієї битви тривалістю практично у вічність.
Історія аеропорту / History of the airport
Sergei Prokofiev Donetsk International Airport is an airport located northwest of Donetsk. The construction of the Donetsk airport was approved by a resolution of the Stalin City Council of July 27, 1931. In 1933 the Donetsk airport was opened.
Міжнародний аеропорт «Донецьк» імені Сергія Прокоф'єва — аеропорт, розташований на північному заході міста Донецьк. Будівництво Донецького аеропорту затверджено постановою Сталінської міської ради від 27 липня 1931 року. 1933 року відбулося відкриття аеропорту «Донецьк».
In 1973, the airport was significantly rebuilt according to the project of architect B.3. Spusanyuk, and in 1975 a new building of the airport was put into operation. This allowed us to accept aircraft of almost all existing types of aircraft at the time, significantly increasing the volume of passenger and cargo traffic. Then, for many years, the airport underwent various reconstructions and reorganizations.
1973 року аеропорт значно перебудований за проектом архітектора В.3. Спусканюка, а 1975 року здана в експлуатацію нова споруда аеровокзалу. Це дозволило приймати літаки практично всіх існуючих на той час типів літаків, значно збільшивши обсяги пасажирських і вантажних перевезень. Потім, впродовж багатьох років аеропорт піддавався різним реконструкціям та реорганізацям.
And when it became known that Ukraine will host Euro 2012, the airport was practically rebuilt and modernized according to the latest standards. Sergei Prokofiev International Airport in Donetsk was perhaps the most expensive facility built for this football event. The Ukrainian government had plans to turn Donetsk airport into a "hub" for flights from Europe to Asia with a capacity of 10 million passengers a year.
А, коли стало відомо, що Україна буде приймати на своїй території Євро-2012 аеропорт практично перебудували та модернізували за найсучаснішими стандартами. Міжнародний аеропорт імені Сергія Прокоф'єва у Донецьку був чи не найдорожчим об’єктом, зведеним до цієї футбольної події. Український уряд мав плани перетворити аеропорт Донецька у "хаб" для рейсів із Європи до Азії з пропускною потужністю 10 млн пасажирів на рік.

And this is what the information board of the airport looked like on the same day. This is the work of Ukrainian illustrator Oleksandr Grekhov, who is able to convey a lot of information in fairly simple illustrations. And from year to year, this illustration spreads on the same day.

After the clash on May 26, there were no fierce fighting all summer, and in September, russian forces resumed heavy offensive operations on the WAR territory. Forces that supported the russian war on the territory of Ukraine carried out systematic assaults on terminals, took new positions, then lost them and again prepared assaults.
Після зіткнення 26 травня все літо не відбувалось запеклих боїв, а з вересня російські сили знов розпочали важкі наступальні дії на територію ДАП. Сили, котрі підтримували війну росії на території України здійснювали систематичні штурми терміналів, займали нові позиції, потім втрачали їх та знову готували штурми.
As a result of the fighting, the airport's infrastructure was destroyed - in December 2014, the old terminal was severely damaged, and on January 13, 2015, the control tower held by Ukrainian soldiers finally collapsed.
Внаслідок боїв руйнувалася інфраструктура аеропорту — у грудні 2014 року значних руйнувань зазнав старий термінал, 13 січня 2015 року остаточно впала диспетчерська вежа, яку утримували українські бійці.
And on January 20, 2015, pro-Russian forces blew up a new terminal, concrete floors and the ceiling in many sections collapsed, hiding Ukrainian defenders. On January 22, 2015, the surviving defenders left the terminal, but many wounded and injured Ukrainian soldiers were taken prisoner.
А 20 січня 2015 року проросійські сили підірвали новий термінал, бетонні перекриття і стеля у багатьох секціях обвалилася, ховаючи під собою українських захисників. 22 січня 2015 року вцілілі захисники вийшли з термінала, проте багато поранених і контужених українських бійців потрапила до полону.
