В першу чергу - згадую те всенародне захоплення 31 рік тому, коли під час референдуму народ України проголосував за нашу незалежність. Більш ніж 90% голосів із усієї держави сказали 'ТАК'! До речі, - населення Криму дали 54,19% голосів; Севастопіль - 57,07%! Луганська, Донецька, а також Одеська та Харківська області свою волю до власної держави виявили більше ніж 80% голосами. Більш як 95% громадян в інших областях проголосували 'за'. Адже кожен в ті часи зрозумів: не підтримати незалежність означає підтримати залежність.

Сьогодні особливо важливо пам'ятати про вибір українського народу, зроблений 1 грудня 1991 року. Не забути, не затерти у підручниках історії. Щоб ніякому неадекватному тирану не прийшло в голову перекроїти наші території і встановити свої вигадані кордони. Як і намагатися змінити історію нашої держави. А тим більше, розгортати криваву агресію на нашій території, перекрутивши історичні рішення нашого незламного народу.

Буквально через тиждень після референдуму, 8 грудня 1991 року, припинив своє існування СРСР. Представниками держав - засновниць СРСР (України, Білорусії та росії) була підписана Біловезька угода. Констатація факту припинення існування Союзу РСР як суб'єкту міжнародного права і як геополітичної одиниці відбулася.
Ратифікована 10 грудня 1991 року Біловезька угода натомість проголосила утворення Співдружності Незалежних Держав. Однак, вже 20 грудня того ж року Верховній Раді України прийшлося знову відстоювати свої права незалежної держави. Бо тлумачення окремих положень Біловезької угоди її учасниками було неоднозначним. У «Заяві Верховної Ради України з приводу укладення Україною Угоди про Співдружність Незалежних Держав» були поставлені акценти, що підтверджували правовий статус незалежної держави, а саме:
а) заперечує проти перетворення СНД на державне утворення, яке мало б статус суб’єкта міжнародного права;
б) виступає за недоторканість та незмінність кордонів між Україною — з одного боку та Росією і Білорусією — з іншого, незалежно від того, чи є Україна стороною Угоди, чи ні. quote

In the "Statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Ukraine's conclusion of the Agreement on the Commonwealth of Independent States" emphasis was placed confirming the legal status of an independent state, namely:
"a) objects to the transformation of the CIS into a state entity that would have the status of a subject of international law;
b) advocates the inviolability and immutability of borders between Ukraine — on the one hand, and Russia and Belarus — on the other, regardless of whether Ukraine is a party to the Agreement or not." quote
