Russia on Tuesday slapped sanctions against a broad range of American officials, including President Joe Biden. The move comes amid escalating tensions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the West over Ukraine.
Russia's Foreign Ministry announced the sanctions, which include sanctions against 17 American officials, including Biden and other former U.S. officials with close ties to President Barack Obama.
In a statement on Wednesday. The sanctions are "in response to the latest U.S. sanctions against Russia," the ministry said, adding that it was because of Washington's "confrontational policies." It added that the measures are intended to "ensure restrictions on activity by these individuals in Russian territory."
The U.S. Treasury Department issued fresh sanctions on Wednesday against six Russian individuals and five entities, including the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency, which has been indicted by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller for allegedly interfering in the 2016 U.S. election through fake social media accounts and advertisements.
