Some time ago my wife and I had decided that it was time for our son to start preschool. Quite an important step for our son and for both of us as parents, given our experiences on the first day of preschool, though. Having to face the problems and now that our son was four years old, it was time, it also gave way for him to further develop his social skills, since they were greatly affected by the social distancing caused by COVID. Although COVID affected the entire population in more than one way, it was time to continue with our lives and take that important step.
They called us for an interview to see how developed the child was in terms of his abilities and interactions and his level of development (being 4 years old) that impressed me since I thought it was done in another way, although I must say that it makes perfect sense of the world thinking about it more carefully.
We arrived at school, with umbrellas in hands and feet wet from the heavy rain that morning, they immediately attended us and made me go with my son to a room where there were about 3 teachers and about 4 children who played with the figures I identified the colors (here I will make a parenthesis because I must explain something. Due to COVID and social distancing, my son is not the most sociable person in the world and sometimes he throws tantrums, especially when he does not understand a situation) the teachers They took my son in such a natural way that I was surprised, but at the same time I was filled with joy, and very secretly I left the classroom so that my son would have his own space, leaving him in the care of the teachers.
30 minutes passed and I still didn't hear a single cry of desperation, or a tantrum from my son, nor any cry of: MOM, DAD! WHERE ARE YOU?
Just silence, which filled me with joy and at the same time brought back memories of the past. My first day of preschool was painful, just to call it something nice. My mom had left me at school while I was crying sitting on the floor with other children and a teacher next to me telling me that she would come later, after crying which I consider quite a long time (for sure it was not like that) I decided to join to the group and sing with all my classmates and start my new adventure in preschool. As a child, being so introverted, I would have NEVER thought of entering a classroom for just an interview and playing with some teachers without having my parents by my side. Which filled me with happiness to see how my son sat down and began to be the same in such a natural way that I myself could not believe it.
After my wife and I spent about an hour and a half outside, they would usher us in to fill out some paperwork with the typical information the school asks for. The next step would be to speak with a psychopedagogue who would test the child's social level and how he or she functions... In this way, having a profile of the child, decide if he or she was ready for preschool. Interestingly, my wife and I were worried about any tantrums or awkward situations that might arise with our son due to the little social interaction we have had. However, sooner rather than later we realized that the boy did not want to leave. HE LOVED SCHOOL! the next day he told us he wanted to come back. We ended the visit to the Preschool letting him play for a while in a nearby park, our son was amazed and soon we saw him climbing and throwing himself down the slide, enjoying that moment.
