IS BEING BUSY A METRIC FOR SUCCESS?๐Ÿค”

in Self Improvement โ€ข 3 years ago

We burst into laughter when Maam J., my co-teacher got panicked about fixing her eyebrows before going home while we were on the street side waiting for the bus.

"I almost forgot to fix my eyebrow! I don't want to look stressed in front of my husband! Grr. I was so busy the whole day!", she uttered in panic while fixing her brows.

Sorry, I'm busy!

I'm so busy, I need to finish this and that,!

I forgot because I was so busy!

Busy, busy, busy,

These are the phrases we often hear from someone who spends his/her time working limitlessly. We often hear these phrases from someone who has a lot of things on his plate that he could no longer accept and do anything else other than his work.

Is being busy a metric for success?

I grew up in a setting where busy people are the successful ones. Many of my neighbors lounge around doing nothing most of the day on almost all days of the week, while only few are busy. My busy neighbors go to work, come home at five, and then do something else on the weekend. The former are poorer in economic status and the latter is average and middle average. From my observation, it is obvious as daylight that my busy neighbors are successful in their professional life and they acquire material things for convenient and comfortable living. So my young mind ended up asking a question, "If I learn how to be busy, will I be successful too in the future?"

Why do people love to be busy?

We oftentimes use "I am busy" as an excuse. But some people love the busyness of life. Research about Conspicuous consumption of time: When busyness and lack of leisure time become a status symbol by Bellezza S. and company indicates that an individual's perceived level of busyness may be heavily connected to their self-worth, as well as how others view their status. So being busy makes someone feel in demand, important, better, and capable than others.

This case is evident in my workplace, our Master Teachers(higher rank teachers) are so busy, aside from their teaching loads, a lot of paperwork is filed on their desks, and they always give more than what is asked, maybe they are just inspired to work harder because of course their salary is much bigger compared to other teachers, they even report at school on weekends bringing their family with them!

However, I, noticed, that the more they get busier, the more they become in demand and important -attending seminars here and there, representing our school in some events together with the school principal, and easily getting promotions. So I wonder again, do I need to be very busy to be promoted and become successful?

Is being busy better?

Because being busy implies a big worth in society and the working environment I am in, I tried to be very busy once, but it gives both negative and positive impacts on my well-being. I work hard, I work limitlessly, I didn't procrastinate, and I embrace work tasks as a challenge and an opportunity for me to show my capabilities and flexibility (packet ba). I said no to travels, dinners, and all other things that are not related to my work. I focus solely on my work and nothing else. Surprisingly I didn't get tired or bored, rather I feel a sense of accomplishment.

But it's true that Too much of everything will kill you, until such time that I became so overwhelmed and frantic. I didn't realize that I was slowly detaching myself from the people around me and even from my loved ones. I become anxious and moody. I got pimples and eye bags, and got skinnier! I wasn't taking care of myself well. There was even a time when I worked so hard but only accomplished so little which lead to my disappointment. Thankfully, I didn't reach the depression stage.

Busy versus Productive

I searched the signs how busy had I gotten and what should I do to solve it. From there I came across the word productive.

We often confuse these two.
Sometimes we think that we are too busy and we need to be very busy to accomplish tasks but the reality is we are overworked and slammed making us less effective.

Being productive is working and accomplishing things smartly using correct time management. We choose what needs to be done. We become selective with our time and energy. Being productive gives us a sense of fulfillment every time we achieve something.

You are only busy if you say so.

I remember before I joined Hive, I said "Oh, I'm busy, I might blog once a week only or once every two weeks for so many reasons". But when I started blogging and exploring Hive, I was surprised that I was able to blog 2-3 times a week.

"I thought I am busy?"

When the School Year/ Classes started I said again, O, I'm busy, I might not blog anymore or I'll be seldom active", but look! Here I am again!**

"I thought I am busy".

And just a month ago, I said, "Oh, I'm super busy, I have my blogging career and my work, and I can not continue my Thesis anymore", but here I am enrolled for my Thesis Seminar!

"I thought I'm busy!".

So I realized that I'm busy. is the phrase we often feed our mind as an excuse to do new things but in reality, we aren't, we just lack time management.

Busy? Or Productive?
But if you feel you are busy, take a rest, and have a break, there's nothing wrong to pause and breathe for awhile

Ways to stop busyness.

Working hard is good but working smart is better. Their e are several ways to stop busyness and be productive instead, they are time management, spending time with loved ones, knowing your priorities, and knowing your limits and capabilities. There is nothing wrong with admitting our limits and weakness. WORK SMART, NOT HARD.

Being busy won't determine our success. Well, it's good to be one. But let us be productive rather than busy. Choose what needs to be done. Work smart, not hard.๐Ÿฅฐ

That's it Hive! Remind yourself to be productive always.๐Ÿ˜Š

Busy vs. Productive. We often confuse these two.

TRUE THAT! I can totally relate to this. For many years past, I thought being so "busy" would give me the "success" society imposed but look at me now? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Taking my time, working smarter, resting more, and taking it easy. All those years of "being busy" caused my nervous system to be so tense and rigid!

I think these changing times require people to balance things out.

But I love how you are able to balance your life now Miss, in spiritual, emotional, mental, and all other aspects. You have a very pleasing and strong personality, one could not tell that you tried to be very very busy and overworked. โ˜บ๏ธ

Thanks for the comment Miss and the reblog and the support.๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅบ

๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿค™ good luck on ur thesis! yes, remember to be productive! I am guilty of feeling sooooooooo lazy if i am not doing something every minute.. no, actually i'm pretty opposite.. I think a person can do more in 1 hr, if it's smart and very productive use of their time and effort.. compared to some people who just run around and stress out and might even do counter productive things.. or those who just spend useless hours on FB, Insta, etc.. :P

๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿค™ good luck with ur thesis!

Oh thanks, ๐Ÿฅฐ Hopefully I can do it this time! This is my second time enrolling because "I was busy last time". Haha. ๐Ÿค™

And your are right one can do so much in just 1 hour - effort and time-wise, others are good at multitasking too!

I am guilty of feeling sooooooooo lazy if i am not doing something every minute.

I think you're very diligent, but it's okay to feel lazy sometimes man oy. I sometimes do it, haha. As John Lennon said "The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time". ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿค™

luv that quote! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿค™

There are times that I said I'm busy but realized that I end up procrastinating. And yep! We are confused between busy and productive, I might choose the latter. But right now, I'm literally busy ๐Ÿ˜†

Haha. I think it has become our culture to say we are busy. But being busy is better than procrastinating I guess?

If you are busy doing something to improve your personality, character, and the person you want to be, then I think it's good to be busy sometimes. But if you are already working, naaaahhh I suggest choosing to be productive.โ˜บ๏ธ work smart not hard.

Busy with school works๐Ÿ˜†

an important lesson best taught early on , although this next generation of technology-assisted kids seem to already know this concept in their own way ๐Ÿ˜„ thank you for sharing your article on this!

Oh, I envy them. It took time for me to learn this. Haha!

This is great for the young generation to be wise and smart for their endeavor as early as their age. Mhm, I think this also depends on the culture because the GenZs in my community aren't busy because they procrastinate most of the time.๐Ÿ˜…

Thanks @ilovewintergem for precious words.๐Ÿ˜Š

Working hard is good but working smart is better.

Just what I was about typing here too until I read it.. I have also been in that category that I will always scream "I am busy" neglecting other things in my life, like not having time for my friends or families, just because I want to achieve a lot but in the end, it isn't always productive. So why am I busy then? A question I ask sometimes.

The truth is that we mixed busyness with being productive whereas, there are people who says they are busy but aren't productive or even successful.

Even with you being busy or not, the only way to make success is to learn how to manage time and work smart.

Being busy and not having time to relax, enjoy sweet moment with friends and families will never bring success to you. So, we have to balance both up and work smart while we are taking care of the important things in our lives. With this, we would be successful.

You said it right.! I couldn't agree more. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Sometimes we are carried away by the pressure of the society around us. I don't know if this happens to some too, but There were times I thought that "Oh I need to be busy too to be in demand", I mean I overworked myself, but only ended up me being so ineffective and inefficient. Good thing this happened way back when I was younger.

But now, I tried to always be productive, I try my best to balance everything. And ever since I have had my small family with me, I am now selective with my work, I arrange and check everything which should be done first so I may not drain my energy on working.๐Ÿ˜Š

Being busy and not having time to relax, or enjoy sweet moments with friends and family will never bring success to you.

So true, for some success is to have more finances, a high position in their job, and more, but as I started working smart, my success now are my day-by-day accomplishment, my time with my family and loved one, and my health.

Being busy is not a guarantee of success. One should work smart rather than be busy.๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks @princessbusayo for taking the time to read my post. I appreciate it so much.๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ™

We feel that if we are too busy just like others, they will see us as being hard working and doing fine, whereas, we are only deceiving ourselves if we aren't productive with being busy.

We need to understand that making success isn't all about having a fat account but to include your family's happiness and inculcating the right energy to fulfilling all requirements pertaining to your life. With this, we would be successful as we work smart and not drain our energy much.

It's my pleasure visiting your post and I do enjoyed it โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿคฉ

This is so true. We often use I am busy as an excuse to procrastinate on the most important things sometimes. I can truly relate to the anxiety and fatigue that comes after trying to do so much.

It is best to be productive than busy and hard working. Working smart means you manage your time well, have time for family and friends, do your hobbies and gain skills rather than being a junk of all and a master of none.

I can't be busy all the time. Avevah is life because I'm a loofingera. Hahahaha. Kidding aside, you are definitely true mam @callmesmile . Time management jud is really important especially if napa ta lain trabahuon aside sa trabahuon sa atong profession. Hehehe.

It's really the culture that we have in our place. The thought that only if you would be busy with your job and do another extra miles, and then you will be successful. I agree a lot with you. We should know how to manage our time well to be efficient and get the results that we wanted, not just being busy but just drowning ourselves with piled up works and detaching ourselves from others.

That's why, one should learn to work smart, not hard, especially you @ayane-chan that you are still young.๐Ÿ˜Š It would be stress-free if one mastered this art of being productive. It took me a couple of years in my job before I learned this one. And now that I am learning it, I slowly have this balance in life, my family, myself, and work.

We can also apply this "being productive in our life as a student".๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks @ayane-chan for dropping by. ๐Ÿค—
