Greetings, Hive!
After the grandiloquence that the Marvel Cinematic Universe became from the first Avengers movie onwards with its world-scale battles, gods, space travels, homicidal artificial intelligences, universal conflicts involving artifacts from creation itself, it was hard to bring it all back to a much smaller scale, and yet that was exactly what Marvel did... Literally. Debuting as the twelfth film and the last of the second phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, arrives Ant-Man, a film with a lot of heart that felt like a breath of fresh air and one that I particularly remember with a lot of fondness, however, will it have aged as well as I remember it? It's time to find out with this review.
So without any further ado, let's start!
The production of this film dates back to 2006 when Marvel Studios decided to hire Edgar Wright to be in charge of the script; however the movie wasn’t a so important project for Marvel due to the relatively low popularity of the character outside comics, so it was decided to work under a free agenda. After submitting 3 drafts of his script, Wright had to abandon the project in 2014 due to creative differences with Marvel executives, however much of his work remained in the final product. In June of that same year it was announced that Peyton Reed would direct the film.
The cast stars Paul Rudd (who incidentally also had a hand in writing the script) in the lead role of Scott Lang / Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross / Yellowjacket, Michael Peña as Luis, and finally Michael Douglas as Hank Pym / the original Ant-Man. The film's world premiere took place on June 25, 2015 while it was released in the United States on July 15, 2015. Critical reception was generally favorable from both specialists and general audiences, noting its humor, Paul Rudd's performance, special effects, and the much smaller scale it has in relation to the rest of the MCU.
The plot opens with a flashback to 1989, specifically during a meeting of the secret agency S.H.I.E.L.D involving Hank Pym, Howard Stark (Tony Stark's father), Peggy Carter and Mitchell Carson. This meeting is taking place due to the agency’s efforts to duplicate Hank Pym’s shrinking technology, who by then was working under the alias of Ant-Man using a suit and subatomic particles that allowed him to shrink to the size of an ant, however Hank thought this technology was too dangerous to be shared with the world, so after realizing S.H.I.E.L.D’s attempts to replicate it he decides to quit from the agency. Back in the present (specifically after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron) we meet Scott Lang, a recently released from prison thief who is trying to rebuild his life with all the complications that come with being in prison; he can't get a job, he hasn't been able to pay child support or have custody to spend time with his daughter, and everyone remembers him as a thief.
Despite this, his former cellmate Luis offers him one last chance for a robbery that promises to fix all his problems: robbing the abandoned house of an eccentric old millionaire, an easy job, and although Lang doesn't accept at first, he eventually decides to do it. Upon arriving at the house and managing to break down the door to the main vault, all Lang finds is what he describes as "an old biker suit," with no idea that it's Ant-Man's suit or that the robbery was a test set up by Hank Pym himself to gauge his abilities to eventually inherit the Ant-Man mantle from him.
As I've said a couple of times, one of the great successes of this film is to return the focus to something much more "casual" so to speak, leaving a little aside the global/spatial conflicts because while the plot revolves around a possible threat on a global scale, we know it's not even close to what we see in the Avengers movies. This, and its humor, makes Ant-Man sometimes feel like a point and apart from the UCM which to be honest is quite nice as it moves away from pretentious approaches that can become tiresome, and speaking about its humor.... By this point we are already more than used to the humor led by Tony Stark’s flamboyant personality or something much more American when the character played by Robert Downey Jr doesn’t appears.
However in Ant-Man’s case the humor feels a little different, it doesn’t get to be visceral or crude but it is definitely more satirical, which is quite appreciated because apart from giving a break from the usual it also gives it an identity of its own. By freeing itself from the weight of an overly complex plot it can allow itself to move very well between moments of comedy, seriousness, tension, or action, although of course we must remember that we are talking about a Marvel movie (and also one with a strong load of humor), so it is more than logical not to expect a spy thriller or something, despite that, the moments in which the film takes itself seriously doesn’t feel forced or coming out of nowhere and are congruent with the overall tone. I also think the pacing is just right, at no point did I find it tedious or feel like anything was happening too fast. Honorable mention to Luis, Scott Lang's friend, he steals the scene every time he appears.

Ant-Man’s technical and production section is another one of its bests parts or even dare I say the best one; special effects when Scott is reduced to insect size are simply spectacular and sublimely convey the impact this has on his body and perspective of the world, apart from being perfect material to create great scenes of both action and comedy and even a combination of these two. Performances on the lead roles are full of the charisma that a movie like this needs, nothing is lacking but nothing is too much and without a doubt Paul Rudd stands out a lot as Scott Lang / Ant-Man and is a welcome addition to the MCU.

Another detail I really enjoyed is how this movie makes constant references to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like at the beginning when they are in the S.H.I.E.L.D meeting with Howard Stark and Peggy Carter, when Scott mentions The Avengers in a conversation with Hank Pym, and of course, the fight between Falcon and Ant-Man in the Avengers facility, I have to confess that I love this kind of details and they make me feel that everything really coexists in the same universe, as obvious as it may be. One of my recurring complaints about Marvel is that their soundtracks are usually quite forgettable and well... Unfortunately Ant-Man is no exception to this, the soundtrack passes without a single musical motif that stayed in my mind or that even motivated me to listen to the soundtrack on Youtube, nothing new, but it's still a bit disappointing.

Following the same order of ideas regarding my complaints with Marvel, once again I have to say that Darren Cross / Yellowjacket is a pretty forgettable villain and feels like nothing more than a device to move the plot along, I mean even his character's conflict as a villian has nothing to do with the main character, Scott Lang, instead his conflict revolves around Hank Pym; Scott and Darren don't cross paths until THE END of the movie. While this might be "justifiable" by arguing something like Darren Cross' conflict is with who carries Ant-Man's identity, I'm just not sold on it... But anyway, maybe I'm getting too pretentious with a Marvel movie, but come on! Give me a memorable villain, one that earns to be hated, and that and the end it feels satisfying when the hero of the day beats him.

Ant-Man is a film that from the simplicity of its approach it opens a quite particular space for itself among the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because while it is true that it’s not perfect and that in fact its formula is the typical "introduction of a new superhero", what makes it stand out is the execution of the formula; Ant-Man knows how to balance very well when to be entirely a comedy and when to dedicate space to move its plot in favor not only of itself, but of what it cements for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, incredibly creative and well executed action scenes, a comedy different enough to stand out, and some top notch special effects, all together makes for me, Scott Lang's first adventure in this universe a really memorable one.

Después de la grandilocuencia en la que se convirtió el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel a partir de la primera película de Los Vengadores con sus batallas a escala mundial, dioses, viajes por el espacio, inteligencias artificiales homicidas, conflictos universales relacionados con artefactos provenientes de la creación misma, era difícil llevar todo de nuevo a una escala mucho más pequeña, sin embargo eso hicieron… Literalmente. Debutando como la doceava película y la última de la segunda fase del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, llega Ant-Man, una película con mucho corazón que se sintió como una bocanada de aire fresco y que particularmente yo, recuerdo con mucho cariño, sin embargo, ¿habrá envejecido tan bien como la recuerdo? Es hora de averiguarlo con esta reseña.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!
La producción de esta película se remonta al año 2006 cuándo Marvel Studios decidió contratar a Edgar Wright para que se encargara del guión, sin embargo al tratarse de un proyecto no tan importante para Marvel debido a la relativa baja popularidad del personaje fuera del mundo de los comics, se decidió trabajar bajo una agenda libre. Después de presentar 3 borradores de su guión, Wright tuvo que abandonar el proyecto en el 2014 debido a diferencias creativas con los ejecutivos de Marvel, no obstante gran parte de su trabajo se mantuvo en el producto final. En junio de ese mismo año se anunció que Peyton Reed dirigiría la película
En el elenco tenemos a Paul Rudd (quién por cierto también participo en la escritura del guión) en el papel protagónico de Scott Lang / Ant-Man, a Evangeline Lilly como Hope Van Dyne, a Corey Stoll como Darren Cross / Yellowjacket, a Michael Peña como Luis, y finalmente a Michael Douglas como Hank Pym / el Ant-Man original. El estreno mundial de la película tuvo lugar el 25 de junio del 2015 mientras que en Estados Unidos se estrenó el 15 de julio del mismo año. La recepción de la crítica fue generalmente favorable tanto por parte de especialistas como del público general, destacando su humor, la actuación de Paul Rudd, los efectos especiales, y la escala mucho más pequeña que tiene en relación al resto del UCM.
La trama inicia con un flashback del año 1989, concretamente durante una reunión de la agencia secreta S.H.I.E.L.D donde participan Hank Pym, Howard Stark (padre de Tony Stark), Peggy Carter y Mitchell Carson. Dicha reunión se está llevando a cabo debido que la agencia está tratando de duplicar la tecnología de reducción de Hank Pym, quién para ese entonces trabajaba bajo el alias de Ant-Man haciendo uso de un traje y partículas subatómicas que le permitían reducirse al tamaño de una hormiga, sin embargo Hank pensaba que esta tecnología era muy peligrosa para compartirla con el mundo, por lo que luego de enterarse del intento por parte de S.H.I.E.L.D de replicarla decide renunciar a la agencia. De vuelta al presente (concretamente después de los acontecimientos de Avengers: Age of Ultron) conocemos a Scott Lang, un ladrón recién salido de prisión que está tratando de rehacer su vida con todas las complicaciones que conllevan el haber estado preso; no consigue trabajo, no ha podido cumplir con la pensión alimenticia de su hija ni tiene la custodia para compartir tiempo con ella, y además, todo el mundo lo recuerda como un ladrón.
A pesar de esto, su ex compañero de celda Luis le ofrece una última oportunidad de robo que promete arreglar todos sus problemas: asaltar la casa abandonada de un viejo millonario y excéntrico, un trabajo fácil, y aunque al principio Lang no acepta, eventualmente decide hacerlo. Al llegar a la casa y lograr derribar la puerta de la bóveda principal, lo único que Lang encuentra es lo que el describe como “un viejo traje de motorizado”, sin tener idea de que se trata del traje de Ant-Man ni de que el robo fue una prueba puesta por el mismo Hank Pym para medir sus capacidades para, eventualmente, heredarle el manto de Ant-Man.
Como he dicho un par de veces, uno de los grandes aciertos de esta película es devolver el enfoque a algo mucho más “casual” por decirlo de alguna manera, dejando un poco de lado los conflictos globales/espaciales ya que si bien la trama gira entorno a una posible amenaza a escala global, sabemos que no es ni de chiste algo parecido a lo que vemos en las películas de Los Vengadores. Esto, y su humor, hacen que en ocasiones Ant-Man se sienta como un punto y aparte del UCM lo que para ser sincero resulta bastante agradable ya que se aleja de planteamientos pretenciosos que pueden llegar a cansar, y hablando de su humor… Para este punto ya estamos más que acostumbrados al humor liderado por la extravagante personalidad de Tony Stark o a algo mucho más americano cuándo no aparece el personaje interpretado por Robert Downey Jr.
Sin embargo, en el caso de Ant-Man el humor se siente un poco distinto, no llega a ser visceral o crudo pero definitivamente es más satírico, cosa que se agradece bastante porque aparte de darle un respiro a lo habitual también le da un identidad propia. Al liberarse del peso de una trama en exceso compleja esta misma puede permitirse moverse muy bien entre los momentos de comedia, seriedad, tensión, o acción, aunque claro hay que recordar que estamos hablando de una película de Marvel (y además de una con una fuerte carga de humor), por lo que es más que lógico no esperar un thriller de espionaje o algo por el estilo, pero a pesar de eso se agradece mucho los momentos en los que la película se toma en serio a sí misma, no se sienten forzados ni salidos de la nada y son congruentes con el tono general. Igualmente el ritmo me parece correcto, en ningún momento se me hizo tediosa o sentí que algo pasaba demasiado rápido. Mención honorífica para Luis, el amigo de Scott Lang, se roba la escena cada vez que aparece.

El apartado técnico de Ant-Man es otro de sus puntos fuertes o incluso me atrevería a decir que el mejor, los efectos especiales cuándo Scott se reduce al tamaño de un insecto son sencillamente espectaculares y transmiten de manera sublime el impacto que esto tiene en su cuerpo y en la perspectiva del mundo, aparte de ser material perfecto para crear escenas geniales tanto de acción como de comedia e incluso, una combinación de ambas. Las actuaciones de los roles protagónicos están llenas del carisma que una película como esta necesita, no falta pero tampoco sobra nada y sin lugar a dudas Paul Rudd destaca muchísimo como Scott Lang / Ant-Man y es un más que bienvenido agregado al UCM.

Otro detalle que disfruté muchísimo es como esta película hace constantes referencias al resto del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, como al principio cuándo están en la reunión de S.H.I.E.L.D con Howard Stark y Peggy Carter, cuándo Scott hace mención de Los Vengadores en una conversación con Hank Pym, y por supuesto, la pelea de Falcon y Ant-Man en las instalaciones de Los Vengadores, tengo que confesar que este tipo de detalles me encantan y me hacen sentir que de verdad todo coexiste en un mismo universo, por más evidente que sea. Una de mis quejas recurrentes con respecto a Marvel es que sus bandas sonoras suelen ser bastante olvidables y pues… Desafortunadamente Ant-Man no es excepción a esto, la banda sonora pasa sin pena ni gloria y nuevamente, al terminar la película no hubo ni un solo motivo musical que se quedara en mi mente o que si quiera me motivara a escuchar el soundtrack en Youtube, nada nuevo, pero igual es un poco decepcionante.

Siguiendo el mismo orden de ideas con respecto a mis quejas con Marvel, nuevamente tengo que decir que Darren Cross / Yellowjacket es un villano bastante olvidable y no se siente como más que un recurso para mover la trama, porque es que incluso el conflicto de su personaje no tiene nada que ver con el protagonista, Scott Lang, sino que es directamente con Hank Pym, Scott y Darren no cruzan caminos sino hasta EL FINAL de la película. Si bien esto podría ser “justificable” argumentando algo como que el conflicto de Darren Cross es con quién porte la identidad de Ant-Man, a mí simplemente no me convence… Quizás me estoy poniendo demasiado pretencioso con una película de Marvel, ¡pero vamos! Dame un villano que sea memorable, que se gane ser odiado y que se sienta satisfactorio cuando el héroe de turno le gane

Ant-Man es una película que desde la sencillez de su planteamiento se abre un espacio bastante particular dentro del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, porque si bien es cierto que no es perfecta y que de hecho su fórmula es la típica “introducción de un nuevo superhéroe”, lo que la hace destacar es la ejecución de la fórmula; Ant-Man sabe equilibrar muy bien cuándo ser enteramente una comedia y cuándo dedicar espacio a mover su trama en pro no solo de sí misma, sino de lo que cimenta para el futuro del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, escenas de acción increíblemente creativas y bien ejecutadas, una comedia lo suficientemente diferente como para destacar, y unos efectos especiales de primera, todo en conjunto hace que para mí, la primera aventura de Scott Lang en este universo sea una de las más memorables.

Now, to answer the question from beginning of the post: did Ant-Man age as well as I remember? Well, for me yes, watching it again was just as exciting and fun as the first time, I think it's a movie with quite a bit of heart and identity and a perfect introduction to the character, and while it may not be pivotal within the MCU I highly recommend giving it a chance if you haven't, I assure you it will be worth it.
Ahora, respondiendo a la pregunta del inicio de este post: ¿Ant-Man envejeció tan bien como recordaba? Pues, para mí sí, verla de nuevo fue igual de emocionante y divertido que la primera vez, pienso que es una película con bastante corazón e identidad y una introducción perfecta para el personaje, y aunque puede que no sea fundamental dentro del UCM recomiendo ampliamente darle una oportunidad si es que no lo han hecho, les aseguro que valdrá la pena.

Ant-man es una película que disfrute mucho, realmente no he visto tanto de Marvel, pero con esta si la pasé bien, como tú dices, tiene gran identidad propia, la comedia está muy buena y el protagonista Scott Lang hace un gran trabajo.
Igual concuerdo contigo que el villano si no fue lo mejor, la verdad no lo recordaba, también quiero de los malos que uno termina odiando, pero que causan mayor impacto con ello.

Sí, de hecho considero que Ant-man está bsstante infravalorada, usualmente es una película de la que no se habla mucho o cuándo se menciona, se habla como si fuese una especie de refrito de Ironman, cuándo la realidad es que está bastante lejos de serlo.

I really liked Ant Man when I saw it years ago. What made me enjoy it so much was the comedy. Paul Rudd is funny enough but Michael Pena's character is one I can never ever forget. The guy was so funny to watch making serious scenes feel so subtle. I really wish he starred in many more marvel movies but oh well.

Esta película hizo que empezara a admirar al héroe que es Ant-Man, fue una muy buena introducción de este personaje al MCU y la verdad que sí, fue definitivamente un descanso de ver las típicas peleas de Marvel a escalas inimaginables, la verdad es una gran película. Saludos
