Plot

Jay, a lovely young woman, has a sexual relationship with her new partner, but she is unaware that she is the victim of a curse transmitted through sex. Following that night, a creature capable of taking on various identities begins to follow her at a gradual but relentless rate, wherever she goes. Before the evil creature approaches her, the girl will work with her pals to find a solution to break the curse.

Why you should watch it?

  • A constant presence : he's not the typical villain you expect from a horror movie. He's a demon that for some reason, at least for me, is plausible in real life. Imagine you are returning home from an evening with friends. You are alone and you enter a dark and narrow alley. As you walk down it you have this feeling of unease, which you don't quite understand where it comes from. You begin to have a strange feeling that someone or something is watching you. You start to get nervous. You are almost afraid to turn around and check if someone is actually watching you. Eventually, you gather your strength and find the courage to turn around, and discover that... there is no one there. You think this will calm you down, but as soon as you turn around and start walking again you discover that the fear is still there. Even though you don't see anyone with your own eyes, you can't be 100% sure that there isn't something behind you watching you with evil intentions. A slow-moving presence that you can't escape, that you can't escape from, and that will haunt you forever.
That's the feeling this movie gives you while watching it.

  • Originality: It's a film that while it doesn't have jumpscare and isn't splatter, it still manages to convey a sense of constant anxiety that makes it one of the scariest films of recent years. The film doesn't have many scenes that create a real sense of disgust, but those few that do, are truly disturbing.
This is one of the few films that manages to be scary even in the daytime scenes, as the "presence" is always there and it doesn't need to be nighttime for it to logically appear. This is a feature that is not very recurrent in horror movies (the only other one that comes to mind is Middsommar, where this feature is projected to the maximum terms), usually to create anxiety you need the dark, while here it is permanent.

  • The soundtrack: The sensitivity of It Follows' authors allowed them to return "to the origins," with a soundtrack designed to depict the boys' horror of the unknown. The soundtrack is the genuine "nervous system" of the picture, virtually a character, and was masterfully composed by the young Rich Vreeland, alias Disasterpeace. It's impossible to ignore the unease it causes.

Why it is not perfect?

  • The idea behind the film, is very original, but the main problem is that it is very easily beatable (at least from the information that we can extrapolate from the movie).
The demon in question travels at a very low speed, so it would be enough to move continuously and anticipate it, being able to escape from him (also because defeating him is impossible).

  • The other point of criticism that I feel to bring is that this film, like many others, falls into the usual taboo of horror movies: the protagonists are basically stupid teenagers (most of them at least). Some of the characters, even when confronted with the obvious, do not believe what they are told. The usual skeptical character, who doesn't believe in the paranormal, in a world where clearly all signs are pointing in the opposite direction and obviously ends up dying badly.

Conclusion

Overall this is a very good horror film, perhaps my favorite.

Rating

My personal vote, comparing it with other horror movies (and so not on a scale that takes into account also other movie genres), is:

9.5/10

I loved this film, very original and yet simple idea that can effortlessly create extremely creepy moments. I wish all horror films were as original as this one...

Yeah that would be amazing, but actually is the exact opposite, to find such a movie has become an almost impossible mission
