Today I finished watching the story of Ed Gain in the Netflix series Monster, which tells the experiences of one of the most famous serial killers of the 20th century, what his motivations were and above all his disturbances, but the most shocking thing is to discover that his actions not only shocked a country, and in fact the entire world, but that they motivated others, equally or more disturbed than Bundy and Speck, to carry out their crimes.
Hoy terminé de ver la historia de Ed Gain en la serie Monstruo de Netflix, la cuál cuenta las vivencias de uno de los asesinos en serie más famosos del siglo XX, cuales fueron sus motivaciones y sobre todo sus perturbaciones, pero lo más impactante es descubrir que sus acciones no solo conmocionaron a un país, y de hecho al mundo entero, sino que motivaron a otros, igual o más perturbados a como Bundy y Speck a llevar a cabo sus crímenes.
However, there is a difference between Ed Gain and the other murderers I mentioned, and that is that there was at least some purpose of amendment in him (at least as far as the series is concerned). Ed, in the midst of it all, was an innocent boy motivated by impulses, and these impulses were the product of restrictions and the sick censorship of his mother, it is obvious that Mrs. Gain also had a screw loose, but it was precisely her way of raising him that developed the enormous emotional attachment that Ed had with her, as well as the distorted idea that he had about sex and relationships with women. To top it all off, everything took place at a time when schizophrenia was not so well known, and in any case, when it was diagnosed, lobotomy was perhaps the best and only option, however Ed was lucky to have not only a good diagnosis, but adequate care.

But there's something shocking about all of this, something even more serious than Gain's own crimes, and that's the way the media handled the whole thing. They didn't do it with respect or subtlety, but rather they made a circus out of it all. It wasn't about judging him harshly because at the end of the day the guy wasn't right in the head, but neither was it about romanticizing his behavior, much less glorifying it. His image had a huge influence on pop culture and in fact inspired films and characters like Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" or Norman Bates from Psycho. This in turn influenced other people who in one way or another identified with him, unleashing a disaster. But all of this undoubtedly leaves us with several questions like: Why did they allow the other killers to send letters to Ed? Why didn't they monitor what was written in them? However, ironically, it was thanks to one of these letters that Ed was able to uncover one of the serial killers and prevent him from continuing his terrible compendium of death.
Pero hay algo impactante en todo esto, algo incluso más grave que los propios crímenes de Gain, y es la forma en la que los medios manejaron todo el asunto, no lo hicieron con respeto ni sutileza, sino que hicieron un circo de todo aquello, no se trataba de juzgarlo con rudeza porque al fin y al cabo el tipo no estaba bien de la cabeza, pero tampoco de romantizar su comportamiento y mucho menos glorificarlo, su imagen influyó muchísimo en la cultura pop y de hecho inspiró películas y personajes como Leatherface de "La masacre de Texas" o Norman Bates de Psycho, y esto a su vez influyó en otras personas que de alguna u otra manera se identificaban con él, desatando un desastre, pero todo esto sin duda nos deja con varias interrogantes como ¿Por qué permitían que los otros asesinos enviaran cartas a Ed? ¿Por qué no monitoreaban lo que estaba escrito allí?, sin embargo irónicamente fue gracias a una de estas cartas que Ed pudo descubrir a uno de los asesinos en serie y evitar que continuara su terrible compendio de muerte.
Another point I'd like to mention about the series is obviously Charlie Hunnam's performance, which is simply masterful. You can tell there's a total immersion in the character, he transforms completely, even achieving a certain darkness in his gaze when he brings out his most macabre side, that subtle tone of voice that even seems disturbing when he's actually meant to be kind, the stiffness of his movements or the way he loses control when he feels like he's lost his way in life, how his eyes fill with tears and he conveys fear. Wow! It's impressive, you can tell he studied his character thoroughly.
Otro punto que me gustaría mencionar de la serie es obviamente la actuación de Charlie Hunnam, la cuál es simplemente magistral, se nota que hay una inmersión total en el personaje, se transforma totalmente, logrando incluso cierta oscuridad en la mirada cuando saca de él su lado más macabro, ese tono de voz sutil que incluso se antoja hasta perturbador cuando en realidad pretende ser amable, la rigidez de sus movimientos o la manera en que se descontrola cuando siente que ha perdido el rumbo de su vida, como sus ojos se llenan de lágrimas y transmite miedo. Wow! es impresionante, se nota que estudió a fondo su personaje.

Esta serie fue buenísima, hermana, ¿Recuerdas la escena dónde Ed persigue a los dos hombres con la motosierra? definitivamente me heló la sangre, también estoy de acuerdo contigo en que la actuación del protagonista fue bestial, maravillosa, muy creíble, pero creo que también lo fue la de la actriz que interpretó a su madre. Ahh y la que considero la mejor escena, mi favorita de todas, es esa donde el médico le revela lo que pasa realmente con él, que tiene esquizofrenia. Me gustó la forma en que armaron toda la serie porque en ocasiones parecía que también querían jugar con la mente de la audiencia.
