I had lost internet connection for several days and Netflix had previously auto downloaded an episode of this title so I gave "Fate the Winx Saga" s1e1 a watch during that time.
I did not know at the time it was a live action adaptation of an animated series called "the winx club" So read off the bat the title was extremely unappealing to me. This signals the trend for the entire 1st episode of appealing to established fans while alienating all other viewers.
The exposition is fast and heavy, drowning out all other plot and character establishment. What little I was able to catch of the premise made it seem like Harry Potter except with fairies; this appears to be so on the nose that even the characters mention Harry Potter as a bit of lampshading.
The teen drama is heavy but also thankfully drown out by excessive exposition haha.
Even the magic is lacklustre, mostly elemental magic which as all fantasy fans know is the most basic , boring, and unimaginative type of magic.
I feel like the actors are trying the best with what they re given but it's such poor material to work with it's impossible to tell for sure.
I give the 1st episode of the 1st season a scathing 3 out of 10. I have one caveat: if you are a fan of the animated series it's entirely possible you would rate this 5 or higher and continue watching.
