My first contact with this genre was star wars. The Jedi aesthetic, lightsabers, ships firing lasers, mind powers, darkness, light.
Star Wars had everything a kid dreams of! As if that wasn't enough, the merchandising was excellent and varied.
But as much as I loved Star Wars, I lived my adolescence in an ecstasy of Tolkien and role-playing games. I think it was BattleStar Galactica that knocked fantasy off the podium. But there is something about genre fiction that in my opinion makes it vastly superior. Then Star Trek ended up stomping definitively on any aspirations of it regaining its place.
I didn't miss it, though, because it didn't go anywhere. Science fiction often includes fantasy. Quoting Star Trek "sufficiently advanced technology can be perceived as magic"
Could you separate in Thor technology from mythology? The line is so subtle. This is perhaps the most accurate example there could be. Avatar comes to mind, where the awesomeness of nature is rivaled only by the power of technology.
Aliens
Perhaps the fantasy genre isn't your cup of tea? Want some fear? You've got the whole alien saga! Drama? Cloud Atlas 9 and I can go on and on. The science fiction genre is as malleable as it is exciting.
The Terminator
Terminator is one of the greatest iconic works of science fiction. In the future, the machines revolted and almost annihilated humanity. The story takes place in the 1990s.A soldier travels back in time to defend the would-be mother of humanity's savior. John Connor is the future leader of the resistance and the machines are ready to do anything to terminate him.
To do this they sent the relentless T-101 (or T-850). A robot disguised as a human, with synthetic skin and muscles. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. Both he and the film will be immortal.

The second film released 7 years ago is even better, now The resistance sent an old Terminator (the same model sent to kill him on the first movie) to defend John Connor against the T-1000 a liquid metal entity.
The Matrix Saga
Another example of iconic science fiction is the Matrix, a futuristic dystopia. It tells the story of humanity enslaved by an artificial intelligence. Sown and harvested on a farm to produce energy with their bodies. They grow in incubators and their minds are interconnected in the Matrix. A powerful virtual reality. Designed to be a faithful replica of earth in the early 2000s. The laws of physics in this world can be broken with will and faith.
Flying, dodging bullets, learning kung fu with a flash drive, everything is possible in this orgasmic production of the Wachowski sisters. Matrix is a movie of adventure, action, science fiction, fantasy and some gnostic mysticism.
