La ganadora del Festival de Cannes
The Cannes International Film Festival is one of the most important events in the film industry worldwide. Perhaps because it is located in Europe, it has always had a slightly more globalized vision than that of the Oscars (although these have improved in recent years) and the fact that it's held before other festivals makes it a good opportunity to know which could be the nominations and awards at the following galas such as the SAG's, the Golden Globes and of course the Academy Awards.
El Festival Internacional de Cine de Cannes es uno de los eventos más importantes de la industria cinematográfica a nivel mundial. Quizás por situarse en Europa siempre ha tenido una visión un poco más globalizada que la de los Premios Oscars (aunque estos han mejorado en los últimos años) y el hecho de que se celebre antes que otros festivales hace que sea una buena instancia para calibrar lo que podrían ser las nominaciones y las premiaciones en las siguientes galas como los SAG, los Globos de Oro y por supuesto los Premios de la Academia.
For that reason - and of course, for their quality - it's good to see the films that premiere at the Cannes Festival, those that enter competition and those that win the different awards. Films such as Triangle of Sadness, Parasites, Amour, 4 Months 3 Weeks & 2 Days and other great productions have been awarded at this festival with the Palme D'Or, the highest award given and this year the winning film was the French film Anatomie d'une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet, a story that combines judicial drama with psychological thriller, family issues, crime and many feelings.
Sandra (Sandra Hüller) lives with her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and their son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) in a cabin in the middle of the French Alps with no other company than Daniel's dog. In the first minutes of the film we can see the cabin, Sandra, Daniel, her dog, but we don't see Samuel, and the first time he appears on screen is lying in the snow, in the middle of a pool of blood, dead. To add a little more drama to the story, the one who finds Samuel is his son, Daniel, and to add even more drama and mystery to the matter, it turns out that Daniel is blind. So, since the only other person who was around was Sandra, she becomes the prime suspect in her husband's murder.
Por esa razón - y por supuesto, por su calidad - es bueno revisar las películas que se estrenan en el Festival de Cannes, las que entran en competencia y las que obtienen los diferentes premios. Películas como Triangle of Sadness, Parasites, Amour, 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days y otras grandes producciones han sido premiadas en este festival con la Palme D'Or, máximo galardón que se entrega y este año la película ganadora fue la cinta francesa Anatomie d'une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) de Justine Triet, una historia que mezcla drama judicial con thriller psicológico, asuntos familiares, crimen y muchísimos sentimientos.
Sandra (Sandra Hüller) vive con su marido Samuel (Samuel Theis) y el hijo de ambos, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) en una cabaña en medio de los alpes franceses sin más compañía que el perro de Daniel. En los primeros minutos de la cinta podemos ver la cabaña, a Sandra, a Daniel, su perro, pero no vemos a Samuel, y la primera vez que aparece en pantalla lo hace tirado en la nieve, en medio de un charco de sangre, muerto. Para agregarle un poco más de drama a la historia, quien encuentra a Samuel es su hijo, Daniel, y para agregarle aún más drama y misterio al asunto, resulta que Daniel es ciego. Entonces, dado que la única otra persona que estaba cerca era Sandra, ella se convierte en la principal sospechosa del asesinato de su marido.
The facts are confusing, the testimonies shed partial light on some things, but obscure others, and clarifying what really happened becomes increasingly difficult, both for the trial prosecutor and for the defense attorney. On the other hand, Sandra's character doesn't help to generate sympathy. It's not that she's a bad or rude person, but sometimes she comes across as cold, as if she were too objective about some things. Sandra doesn't want to tarnish her husband's memory, but she wants to prove her innocence and to do so she will have to expose some very personal issues of both of them in front of the jury and her own son.

Now, regardless of whether Sandra is guilty or not, there are several things that I really like about how Anatomy of a Fall is made. The first is that we don't see what happened to Samuel and that is why, while we follow the trial, sometimes we believe that Sandra could have killed him, other times we think it was an accident and we even contemplate the possibility of suicide, without being able to take sides. And the other thing that stands out is the emotional burden that the situation represents for Sandra and her son Daniel and therefore the challenging performance of those who play them. Sandra must, in the midst of her recent widowhood, defend herself against accusations - some of them absurd - move forward, take care of her son, console him knowing that at his young age he's discovering things that he didn't know about his parents in the midst of a judicial process of which He is the main witness (if you can call him that) and she is the main suspect. As often happens in legal disputes - at least on the big screen - things come to light that seem insignificant until you look for a way to relate them to the alleged crime because many times in these situations it's not about telling the truth but demonstrate, with evidence, facts and solid arguments what could have happened. A domestic argument between a husband and wife may be the most everyday thing in the world, but when one of the two is found dead the next day, that fight becomes the motive for a possible homicide; Just like an infidelity, some grudge, a phrase said two months ago, or actions taken years ago, the accusing party seeks to relate everything to the crime that the accused is accused of. And all of this affects the psychology of the characters, which are very well developed, especially Sandra's, they have a lot of depth and we discover them layer by layer as the minutes progress.
Ahora bien, más allá de si Sandra es culpable o no, hay varias cosas que me gustan mucho de cómo esta hecha Anatomy of a Fall. La primera es que no vemos lo que le sucedió a Samuel y por eso, mientras seguimos el juicio, algunas veces creemos que Sandra pudo haberlo matado, otras veces pensamos que fue un accidente e incluso contemplamos la posibilidad de un suicidio, sin poder tomar partido definitivamente por una opción u otra. Y lo otro que destaca es la carga emocional que representa la situación para Sandra y para su hijo Daniel y por ende lo desafiante de la actuación de quienes los interpretan. Sandra debe, en medio de su reciente viudez, defenderse de acusaciones - algunas de ellas absurdas - seguir adelante, cuidar a su hijo, consolarlo sabiendo que a su corta edad está descubriendo cosas que ignoraba de sus padres en medio de un proceso judicial del cual él es el testigo principal (si es que puede llamarse de esa forma) y ella la principal sospechosa. Como suele suceder en los pleitos legales - al menos en la gran pantalla - salen a la luz cosas que parecen insignificantes hasta que se busca la forma de relacionarlas con el supuesto crimen porque muchas veces en esas situaciones no se trata de contar la verdad sino de demostrar, con pruebas, hechos y argumentos sólidos lo que pudo haber ocurrido. Una discusión doméstica entre marido y mujer puede ser lo más cotidiano del mundo, pero cuando uno de los dos aparece muerto al día siguiente, esa pelea se convierte en el móvil de un posible homicidio; igual que una infidelidad, algún rencor, una frase dicha hace dos meses, o acciones realizadas años atrás, la parte acusadora busca relacionar todo con el crimen que se le imputa al acusado. Y todo eso afecta la psicología de los personajes, las cuales están muy bien desarrolladas, especialmente la de Sandra, tienen mucha profundidad y las vamos descubriendo capa a capa a medida que avanzan los minutos.
The film is very well directed, it has a very good script (co-written by the director) and a rhythm that makes it flow. Despite lasting approximately 150 minutes and being a drama, it doesn't feel heavy because it manages to involve you in the plot emotionally. Furthermore, Sandra Hüller's lead performance is magnificent. As the film progressed I had the impression that I had seen it in another movie, but I couldn't remember which one. After finishing the film I was sure that I knew her from before, but I had to check the internet to find that she starred in another very emotional film that I also really liked, the moving Toni Erdmann, a German film nominated for the Oscar for Best International Film. In both that and this, Hüller gives a brilliant performance. So, in my opinion, I think Anatomy of a Fall could be nominated for important awards at other film festivals, European and international, and possibly compete for the Best International Film award at the next Oscars, not only because of its triumph at Cannes but because it is truly an excellent film, with great psychological depth and strong emotionality. La película está muy bien dirigida, tiene un muy buen guión (co escrito por la directora) y un ritmo que la hace fluir. A pesar de durar aproximadamente 150 minutos y de ser un drama, no se siente pesada porque logra involucrarte en la trama desde lo emocional. Además, la actuación protagonista de Sandra Hüller es magnífica. Mientras la cinta avanzaba tenía la impresión de haberla visto en otra película, pero no recordaba en cual. Al terminar la película estuve seguro de que la conocía de antes, pero tuve que revisar internet para encontrar que protagonizó otra película muy emotiva que también me gustó mucho, la conmovedora Toni Erdmann, film alemán nominado al Oscar a Mejor Película Extranjera. Tanto en aquella como en esta, Hüller brinda una actuación brillante. Así que, en mi opinión, creo que Anatomy of a Fall podría ser nominada a premios importantes en otros festivales de cine, europeos e internacionales, y posiblemente compita por el premio a Mejor Película Internacional en los próximos Oscars, no sólo por el aval de su triunfo en Cannes sino porque en verdad es una excelente película, de mucha profundidad psicológica y una fuerte emotividad, ¿alguno de ustedes la ha visto? Suena como una película interesante, el que haya ganado la Palma de Oro sin duda hace que destaque mucho más.
