On several occasions I have mentioned that I enjoy unconventional cinema and that is one of the reasons why MUBI is my favorite streaming platform, but I never thought I would upload a review - if it can be called that - like the one I bring you today because it's not very similar to the type of stories that I usually comment on or find in the posts of the members of this community.

To start, Jill, Uncredited is not a movie, it is a short documentary. But neither is it a documentary in which a voice-over explains or guides the viewer about what they are seeing. The 18 minutes of Jill, Uncredited are a succession of scenes from dozens of films and television series one after the other without any apparent thematic connection. From a train station we go to a hospital and from there to a Victorian garden, all shown for a few seconds, so how are they related? what connects them? The error is in the question because it's not a what but a who: Jill Goldston appears in all those scenes and that is why the camera stops when she appears or takes a close-up to highlight her presence. And yes, I know what you're wondering: who is Jill Goldston? You could say that she is everyone and no one at the same time, but the concrete fact is that Jill is a supporting actress who for decades acted in multiple films and television series. There are a hundred titles in his filmography on IMDB, but although this may seem like a high number - and even though it is - the real number is much higher. There is talk of around two thousand film products in which she appears. Are we in the presence of the most prolific supporting actress in history? Possibly, we just don't know because in most cases her name doesn't appear in the credits.
Para empezar, Jill, Uncredited no es una película, es un cortometraje documental. Pero tampoco es un documental en el que una voz en off explique o guíe al espectador sobre lo que está viendo. Los 18 minutos de duración de Jill, Uncredited son una sucesión de escenas de decenas de películas y series de televisión una detrás de la otra sin que exista una conexión temática aparente. De una estación de tren pasamos a un hospital y de ahí a un jardín victoriano, todos mostrados durante pocos segundos, entonces ¿cuál es la relación? ¿qué las conecta? El error está en la pregunta porque no es un qué sino un quién porque en todas esas escenas aparece Jill Goldston y por eso la cámara se detiene cuando ella aparece o hace un close-up para resaltar su presencia. Y sí, sé lo que se están preguntando ¿quién es Jill Goldston? podría decir que es todos y nadie a la vez, pero el dato concreto es que Jill es una actriz de reparto que durante décadas actuó en múltiples películas y series de televisión. En IMDB aparecen un centenar de títulos en su filmografía, pero aunque este parezca un número alto - y aunque lo sea - el número real es mucho más alto. Se habla de unos dos mil productos cinematográficos en los que ella aparece, ¿estamos en presencia de la actriz de reparto más prolífica de la historia? Posiblemente, sólo que no lo sabemos porque en la mayoría de los casos su nombre no aparece en los créditos.
When we talk about actors and actresses in a film we normally classify them as main and secondary. In La La Land, for example, the biggest roles are those of Mia and Sebastian and that is why Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are the protagonists. But there are also other characters who have a minor participation, such as Keith (played by John Legend) or Mia's friends who perform a great musical number at the beginning of the film. Until then we are all clear with the protagonists and supporting actors.
Cuando hablamos de actores y actrices en una película normalmente los clasificamos en principales y secundarios. En La La Land, por ejemplo, los mayores papeles son los de Mia y Sebastian y por eso Emma Stone y Ryan Gosling son los protagonistas. Pero también existen otros personajes que tienen una participación menor, como el caso de Keith (interpretado por John Legend) o el de las amigas de Mia que ejecutan un gran número musical al inicio de la película. Hasta allí todos estamos claros con los protagonistas y los actores de reparto.
But there are also the extras, those background characters. These are the dancers in the Someone in the crowd scene in La La Land, the attendees at Sebastian's sister's wedding, the diners who do not pay attention to the carols that Sebastian performs on Christmas night. The extras are a lot and that's why we don't think about them, but they play a fundamental role: creating an illusion of reality. If Bill Murray chased Scarlett Johansson through empty streets we wouldn't believe it was Tokyo. If on board the Titanic we only saw Jack, Rose and a handful of minor characters, we would not appreciate the greatness of the ship. That is to say, for these scenes to be believable and for the story of the other characters to stand out from the rest, these background characters are needed, many of whom Jill Goldston played over several decades. In the scenes shown in the documentary we can see her near Meryl Streep, in the middle of a Hitchcock film or with Anthony Hopkins in The Elephant Man, the only film that I could recognize in the documentary. How did she manage to appear in more than two thousand movies and series? Don't know. Either she had an excellent manager or a lot of luck, but the truth is that after decades of not being credited, Jill Goldston finally appears as the protagonist - and the only name in the cast - of Jill, Uncredited.
Pero también están los extras, aquellos personajes de fondo. Se trata de los bailarines en la escena de Someone in the crowd en La La Land, los asistentes a la boda de la hermana de Sebastian, los comensales que no prestan atención a los villancicos que Sebastian interpreta la noche de Navidad. Los extras son el montón y por eso no pensamos en ellos, pero cumplen un rol fundamental: crear una ilusión de realidad. Si Bill Murray persiguiera a Scarlett Johansson por unas calles vacías no creeríamos que es Tokio. Si a bordo del Titanic sólo viéramos a Jack, Rose y un puñado de personajes menores, no dimensionaríamos la grandeza del barco. Es decir, para que esas escenas resulten verosímiles y para que la historia de los demás personajes resalten sobre el resto, hacen falta estos personajes de fondo, muchos de los cuales interpetó Jill Goldston a lo largo de varias décadas. En las escenas que muestra el documental la podemos ver cerca de Meryl Streep, en medio de una película de Hitchcock o junto a Anthony Hopkins en The Elephant Man, única película que pude reconocer en el documental, ¿cómo hizo para aparecer en más de dos mil películas y series? No lo sé. O bien tuvo un manager excelente o bien muchísima suerte, pero lo cierto es que después de décadas de no ser acreditada, finalmente Jill Goldston aparece como protagonista - y único nombre en el reparto - de Jill, Uncredited.
Hence, this entry does not talk about photography, soundtrack, script or other similar aspects, such as plot or editing, because the objective of this review - and of the documentary - is to highlight the edges of the scenes and society, the margins of the world, that whole framework that is part of cinema and that is not always recognized. For this reason, I consider that Jill, Uncredited is the vindication not only of a woman but of an entire group of people - the extras - and a call to reflect on the small things in life, the minor artists, the creators of so many things that surround us and who are not known or awarded. It made me think a little more about the anonymous artists behind some paintings, not very famous songs, short films, in that whole conglomerate of people that form our background, who accompany us momentarily on the stage of our lives, on the subway, on the street, in an elevator, we never know when one of those extras will become the protagonists of our story, but even if they don't, it is necessary to be grateful for their presence in our world. De allí que esta entrada no hable de fotografía, banda sonora, guión ni otros aspectos similares, como trama o montaje, porque el obejtivo de esta reseña - y del documental - es destacar los bordes de las escenas y de la sociedad, los márgenes del mundo, todo ese marco que forma parte del cine y que no siempre es reconocido. Por ello, considero que Jill, Uncredited es la reivindicación no sólo de una mujer sino de todo un grupo de personas - los extras - y un llamada a reflexionar sobre las pequeñas cosas de la vida, los artistas menores, los artífices de tantas cosas que nos rodean y que no son conocidos ni premiados. A mí me hizo pensar un poco más en los artistas anónimos detrás de algunos cuadros, canciones no muy famosas, cortometrajes, en todo ese conglomerado de personas que forman nuestro fondo, que nos acompañan momentáneamente en el escenario de nuestras vidas, en el metro, en la calle, en un elevador, nunca sabemos cuando una de esos extras pasen a ser protagonistas de nuestra historia, pero aunque no lo hagan es necesario agradecer su presencia en nuestro mundo, ¿alguno ha visto el rostro de Jill Goldston en alguna peícula?
