Una película de Justine Triet, directora de "Anatomy of a Fall"
The famous Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place (it ends on Sunday the 25th) and all the eyes of moviegoers are on the titles that have begun to get good reviews at that time because it's a place where great films come out, such as for example, last year's winner, Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet, which also won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was one of the most celebrated films of 2023.
Actualmente se está llevando a cabo el célebre Festival de Cannes (termina el domingo 25) y todos los ojos de los cinéfilos están puestos en los títulos que han comenzado a levantar buenas críticas en esa instancia porque es un lugar del que salen grandes películas, como por ejemplo la ganadora del año pasado, Anatomy of a Fall de Justine Triet, la cual se llevó también el Oscar a Mejor Guión Original y fue una de las cintas más celebradas del 2023.
However, that was not what led me to review this other film by the same director, but rather having found out about the tremendous union of talents that Sibyl presents. As I already said, the film is directed by Justine Triet, the script was written by her along with Arthur Harari (same duo that won the Oscar) and in front of the cameras we have a trio of incredible actresses: Virginie Efira, a French actress from Belgian origin with a great career (including the film Un amour impossible); Sandra Hüller, the talented star of Anatomy of a Fall who also starred in The Zone of Interest; and - one of my favorite European actresses - Adèle Exarchopoulos (Passages, La Vie d'Adèle). Finding out about this combination of Triet-Efira-Hüller-Exarchopoulos, four highly talented women, was what made me want to see this film without even knowing what it was about. Now, so that you can get an idea, I will say that Sibyl is a psychological drama that focuses on two characters. First we have Sibyl (Efira), a psychologist who decides to resume her career as a writer after having published a book ten years ago. To do this, she has to stop seeing all his patients and be able to concentrate on her writing. However, when she had already referred most of her patients to colleagues, a late-night call bursts into her peace of mind and changes her life in a way that not even Sibyl herself could have suspected.
Sin embargo, no fue eso lo que llevó a revisar esta otra película de la misma directora, sino el haberme enterado de la tremenda unión de talentos que presenta Sibyl. Como ya dije, la película está dirigida por Justine Triet, el guión fue escrito por ella misma junto a Arthur Harari (misma dupla que se llevó el Oscar) y frente las cámaras tenemos un trío de actrices increíbles: Virginie Efira, una actriz francesa de origen belga con una gran trayectoria (incluida la película Un amour impossible); Sandra Hüller, la talentosa protagonista de Anatomy of a Fall que también actuó en The Zone of Interest; y - una de mis actrices europeas favoritas - Adèle Exarchopoulos (Passages, La Vie d'Adèle). El enterarme de esa conjunción Triet-Efira-Hüller-Exarchopoulos, cuatro mujeres de gran talento, fue lo que me hizo querer ver esta película sin siquiera saber de qué se trataba. Ahora bien, para que ustedes sí se hagan una idea, diré que Sibyl es un drama psicológico que se centra en dos personajes. Primero tenemos a Sibyl (Efira), una psicóloga que decide retomar su carrera como escritora después de haber publicado un libro diez años atrás. Para ello, tiene que dejar de ver a todos sus pacientes y poder concentrarse en su escritura. Sin embargo, cuando ya había referido a la mayoría de sus pacientes a algunos colegas, una llamada nocturna irrumpe en su tranquilidad y cambia su vida de una forma que ni siquiera la propia Sibyl podría haber sospechado.
The caller is Margot (Exarchopoulos), a young actress who is going through a somewhat complicated situation and who asks Sibyl to help her make a decision: the girl is pregnant. The identity of the father, her relationship with him and certain aspects of the situation make abortion seem like the best option, but there are other feelings and relationships involved that complicate the situation a little and affect the emotional fragility of Margot, who at that time moment feels very vulnerable.
Quien llama es Margot (Exarchopoulos), una joven actriz que está atravesando una situación algo complicada y que le pide a Sibyl que le ayude a tomar una decisión: la chica está embarazada. La identidad del padre, su relación con él y ciertos aspectos de la situación hacen que abortar parezca la mejor opción, pero hay otros sentimientos y relaciones de por medio que complican un poco la situación y que afectan la fragilidad emocional de Margot, quien en ese momento se siente muy vulnerable.
At first, Sibyl decides to support Margot as little as necessary so that she can decide herself, but as the sessions go on and Margot tells her things about her life, Sibyl finds in the girl - and in her story - invaluable raw material for his literary aspirations. This is where one of the biggest dilemmas of the film comes into play: can Sibyl use that story to write a novel? The artist, the writer, is allowed everything when creating her work, but as a psychologist, Sibyl is obliged by professional secrecy not to reveal anything about her patients and even though a novel is a work of fiction, the similarities between the stories - Margot's and the novel - are very evident. Despite knowing this, Sibyl cannot stop writing and the advances she sends to her agent are highly valued by him, so she continues with the novel. However, not everything is limited to that, but as the weeks go by, Margot begins to trust her therapist more and more, to the point that she asks her to accompany her to the film set and Sibyl ends up relating too with the actors of the film and with the director herself (Hüller), which will make her cross professional and personal limits with an impulse from which there will be no turning back. Sibyl is a film with a lot of drama, complex emotions, difficult relationships between people and that reflects on the necessary limits both in professional practice and in daily life.
Al principio, Sibyl decide apoyar a Margot lo mínimo necesario para que ella misma decida, pero conforme se van sucediendo las sesiones y Margot le va contando cosas de su vida, Sibyl encuentra en la chica - y en su historia - una materia prima invaluable para sus aspiraciones literarias. Allí entra en juego uno de los mayores dilemas de la película, ¿puede Sibyl usar esa historia para escribir una novela? Al artista, al escritor, le está todo permitido a la hora de crear su obra, pero como psicóloga, Sibyl está obligada por el secreto profesional a no revelar nada sobre sus pacientes y por más que una novela sea una obra de ficción, las semejanzas entre las historias - la de Margot y la novela - son muy evidentes. A pesar de saber esto, Sibyl no puede dejar de escribir y los adelantos que le envía a su agente son bien valorados por este, así que sigue adelante con la novela. Sin embargo, no todo se limita a eso, sino que, conforme pasan las semanas, Margot comienza a confiar más y más en su terapista, al punto de que le pide que la acompañe al set de grabación de la película y Sibyl termina relacionándose también con los actores de la película y con la mismísima directora (Hüller) lo que hará que traspase los límites profesionales y personales con un impulso del cual no habrá vuelta atrás. Sibyl es una película con bastante drama, emociones complejas, relaciones difíciles entre personas y que reflexiona sobre los límites necesarios tanto en el ejercicio profesional como en la vida diaria.
However, what makes this film something more interesting is the thriller rhythm that Triet and Harari printed in the script, not only because of that non-linear time - an ideal tool in suspense films to capture the viewer's attention - but the different narratives that are intermingled without any type of introduction, like fragments of different stories that have the same center: Sibyl.
Sin embargo, lo que convierte a esta película en algo más interesante es el ritmo de thriller que le imprimieron Triet y Harari en el guión, no sólo por ese tiempo no lineal - herramienta ideal en las películas de suspenso para atrapar la atención del espectador - sino las diferentes narraciones que se van entremezclando sin ningún tipo de introducción, como fragmentos de diferentes historias que tienen un mismo centro: Sibyl.
On the one hand there is the reality in the present tense, that of the sessions with Margot and other patients and her family life with her husband, daughters and sister; Added to this is a second narrative thread that at times seems to be the story she's writing, but also seems like memories of her past. Sibyl is writing a novel using material from Margot's life, but also from her own past, and we see new characters appear in the film who then disappear in the present time, momentarily confusing the viewer. Using abrupt cuts and brief flashes in the style of David Lynch's Mulholland Drive or The Texture of Falling (written, directed, produced by and starring Maria Allred), Sibyl may initially unnerve you, with the first appearance of this resource, but then it can surprise you with the way in which the psychology of its main character is built, who's not only the impeccable professional with literary aspirations that we believed at the beginning, but also - like all people - also has internal demons, wounds from her past and a host of complex emotions fighting within her. In case you have seen and enjoyed Anatomy of a Fall, I recommend Sibyl, available on MUBI and Amazon Prime Video. It's not the same kind of movie and it's not at the level of that one, but it's an interesting, different film and above all a wonderful exhibition of female talent in front of and behind the camera, have any of you seen it? Por un lado está la realidad en tiempo presente, la de las sesiones con Margot y otros pacientes y su vida familiar con su esposo, hijas y su hermana; a ello se suma un segundo hilo narrativo que a ratos parece ser la historia que está escribiendo, pero también parecen recuerdos de su pasado. Sibyl está escribiendo una novela utilizando material de la vida de Margot, pero también de su propio pasado y vemos aparecer personajes nuevos en la película que luego desaparecen en el tiempo presente, confundiendo momentáneamente al espectador. Utilizando cortes abruptos y flashes breves al estilo de Mulholland Drive de David Lynch o The Texture of Falling (escrita, dirigida, producida y protagonizada por Maria Allred), Sibyl puede desconcertarte al inicio, con la primera aparición de este recurso, pero luego puede sorprender con la forma en que se va construyendo la psicología de su personaje protagonista quien no es sólo la intachable profesional con aspiraciones literarias que creíamos al principio, sino que además - como todas las personas - tiene también demonios internos, heridas del pasado y un cúmulo de emociones complejas luchando dentro de ella. En caso de que hayan visto y disfrutado Anatomy of a Fall, les recomiendo Sibyl, disponible en MUBI y en Amazon Prime Video. No es el mismo tipo de película y no está al nivel de aquella, pero es una película interesante, diferente y sobre todo una maravillosa exhibición de talento femenino delante y detrás de la cámara, ¿alguno de ustedes la ha visto? If you doubt I think this plot would be a different movie than what I'm used to! but I'm sure I'll like it, it looks good and your review has aroused my curiosity.
