After having seen Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt present together at the Academy Awards and having also seen Ryan's monologue for Saturday Night Live in which, accompanied by Emily, they covered Taylor Swift's All Too Well talking about the Barbenheimer phenomenon, I knew that even though it wasn't my kind of movie, I wanted to see The Fall Guy.
Después de haber visto que Ryan Gosling y Emily Blunt se presentaran juntos en los premios de la academia y de haber visto también el monólogo que hizo Ryan para Saturday Night Live en el que, acompañado por Emily, hicieron una versión de All Too Well de Taylor Swift hablando sobre el fenómeno de Barbenheimer, supe que aunque no era mi tipo de película, quería ver The Fall Guy.
And according to the promotional trailer, this film directed by David Leitch and written by himself (adapting a TV series from the eighties) seemed to be a mix between a romantic comedy and an action story. And it is exactly that. Colt Seavers (Gosling) is a stuntman; that is, one of those actors who are hired to film the most dangerous scenes within a film production with the aim of not putting the main actor, that is, the star, at risk. Overturning and crashing cars, jumping off a building, diving into water, crashing through a wall of glass, those are things that a stuntman does and not the actor (unless it's Tom Cruise). And that is Colt's job, to be the double of a movie superstar named Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) until an accident takes him off the recording set and Colt decides to isolate himself from the world, quit his job (out of fear) and the girl he was falling in love with, a camerawoman named Jody (Emily Blunt). After working low-paying and tedious jobs for more than a year, Colt receives a call from Tom's agent to act as a stuntman in the actor's next movie, a sci-fi story with cowboys and aliens that is destined to be the next big box office success, which Colt doesn't care about and rejects the offer until he is told that Jody is going to direct the film. With the past wanting to come through his window, Colt agrees and flies to Sydney where they are filming the movie.
Y es que de acuerdo al trailer promocional, esta cinta dirigida por David Leitch y escrita por él mismo (adaptando una serie de Tv de los años ochenta) parecía ser una mezcla entre comedia romántica e historia de acción. Y es exactamente eso. Colt Seavers (Gosling) es doble de acción; es decir uno de esos actores que son contratados para filmar las escenas más peligrosas dentro de una producción cinematográfica con el objetivo de no poner en riesgo al actor principal, es decir, a la estrella. Volcar y chocar automóviles, saltar de un edificio, lanzarse al agua, atravesar una pared de cristales, esas son cosas que hace un doble de acción y no el actor (a menos que sea Tom Cruise). Y ese es el trabajo de Colt, ser el doble de una super estrella del cine llamada Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) hasta que un accidente lo saca del set de grabación y Colt decide aislarse del mundo, renunciar a su trabajo (por miedo) y a la chica de la que se estaba enamorando, una camarógrafa llamada Jody (Emily Blunt). Después de tener trabajos malpagados y tediosos durante más de un año, Colt recibe la llamada de la agente de Tom para que haga de doble en la próxima película del actor, una historia de ciencia ficción con vaqueros y aliens que está llamada a ser el próximo gran éxito de taquilla, cosa que a Colt le da lo mismo y rechaza el ofrecimiento hasta que le dicen que quién va a dirigir la película es Jody. However, not everything is as it seems and as soon as he arrives in Australia, Colt realizes that Jody doesn't want him there and that the real reason Tom's agent called him is because Ryder has been missing for a couple of days. Apparently, the actor got involved with shady people and his life - if he still has it - may be in danger.

From there the film mixes the different plots until they intertwine at the end. On the one hand we see Colt trying to find Tom's whereabouts and to do so he must go to dangerous places with very bad people. Colt is a stuntman, yes, but this is not a scene, it's real life and there are people here who want to get him out of the way at any cost. And on the other hand we see Colt trying to win back the heart of Jody, the only woman with whom he would be happy and who seems to want to give him another chance, but as always happens in these stories, Colt's two persuits are irreconcilable and repeatedly he must choose between one and the other. The Fall Guy is mainly a tribute to the stuntmen who, in this case, personified by Colt, are the heroes of the film. Colt is not the protagonist of Jody's film, but he's of the one we see. The entanglements and the love story are added to that central message; aggregates that do not shine too much, but do what they promise. Let's not kid ourselves, no one is going to see The Fall Guy expecting to have a cinematographic epiphany. The intention of the film and the reason why people go to see it is very clear: entertainment. There are laughs, crushes, explosions, jokes, references to other similar films and a degree of mockery towards the film itself that keep the viewer entertained, happy and attentive.
A partir de allí la película va mezclando las diferentes tramas hasta entrelazarlas al final. Por un lado vemos a Colt intentando dar con el paradero de Tom y para ello debe acudir a lugares peligrosos con gente muy mala. Colt es un doble de acción, sí, pero esto no es una escena, es la vida real y aquí hay gente que quiere sacarlo del camino a como dé lugar. Y por otro lado vemos a Colt intentando reconquistar el corazón de Jody, la única mujer con la que él sería feliz y que parece querer darle otra oportunidad, pero como siempre ocurre en estas historias, las dos búsquedas de Colt son irreconciliables y en repetidas ocasiones debe escoger entre una y otra. The Fall Guy es principalmente un homenaje a los dobles de acción que, en este caso, personificados por Colt, son los héroes de la película. Colt no es el protagonista de la película de Jody, pero sí de la que nosotros vemos. Los enredos y la historia de amor son agregados a ese mensaje central; agregados que no brillan demasiado, pero cumplen con lo que prometen. No nos engañemos, nadie va a ir a ver The Fall Guy esperando tener una epifanía cinematográfica. La intención de la película y la razón por la que la gente va a verla es una muy clara: entretenimiento. Hay risas, flechazos, explosiones, chistes, referencias a otras películas similares y un grado de burla hacia la propia película que mantienen al espectador entretenido, alegre y atento.
The film also has good performances by Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham and Teresa Palmer and a soundtrack full of catchy songs that help make certain moments more fun, such as the appearance of All Too Well (and now I understand why they chose it for Ryan's monologue on SNL) and I think all of these things add up.
La película cuenta también con las buenas actuaciones de Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham y Teresa Palmer y una banda sonora llena de canciones pegajosas que ayudan a hacer más divertidos ciertos momentos, como la aparición de All Too Well (y ahora entiendo por qué la escogieron para el monólogo de Ryan en SNL) y creo que todas estas cosas suman.
Now, that sum is not very high. As I said, the film entertains and little else. I think there is good chemistry between Gosling and Blunt and although their characters are somewhat awkward, they also feel authentic (as authentic as they can feel understanding the context, of course) and the dynamic between them works well. It's not a romantic comedy with big classic romantic gestures or dramatic arguments and toxic jealousy. In that sense, the relationship and its ups and downs are more relaxed than in other stories, but I think that's because the romance is framed within an action comedy, so it couldn't be too maudlin. I think it's a good movie for a Sunday afternoon, to laugh a little while sitting in the theater or on the couch, or for when you want to watch a movie that doesn't make you think (I've heard many people use that phrase); If we talk about romantic comedy I still prefer Crazy Stupid Love and if we talk about action comedies the British Hot Fuzz seems funnier than this one, but The Fall Guy is quite good, it brings together two movie stars in one light story and above all it dignifies and recognizes the work of those anonymous heroes responsible for us being able to enjoy impossible stunts in films precisely like this one, have any of you already gone to see it? Ahora bien, esa suma no es muy elevada. Como dije, la película entretiene y poco más. Creo que hay buena química entre Gosling y Blunt y aunque sus personajes son algo torpes, también se sienten auténticos (lo más auténticos que pueden sentirse entendiendo el contexto, claro) y la dinámica entre ellos funciona bien. No es una comedia romántica con grandes gestos románticos clásicos o con discusiones dramáticas y celos tóxicos. En ese sentido, la relación y sus altibajos son más relajados que en otras historias, pero creo que es porque el romance está enmarcado dentro de una comedia de acción, así que no podía ser muy sensiblera. Creo que es una buena película para un domingo por la tarde, para reírse un poco sentado en el cine o en el sofá, o para cuando se quiere ver una película que no te haga pensar (he oído a muchas personas ocupar esa frase); si hablamos de comedia romántica sigo prefiriendo Crazy Stupid Love y si hablamos de comedias de acción la británica Hot Fuzz me parece más divertida que esta, pero The Fall Guy está bastante bien, reúne a dos estrellas del cine en una historia ligera y sobre todo dignifica y reconoce la labor de esos héroes anónimos responsables de que podamos disfrutar de acrobacias imposibles en películas precisamente como esta, ¿alguno de ustedes ya fue a verla?
