Have you ever felt intrigue or curiosity about the behavior of strange people that might seem crazy at a first glimpse but perhaps there is a little bit of sanity and maybe even a bit of genius in what they are doing? Because if you have, I am sure you will enjoy this film. I mention this because while watching the movie, the behavior of one character reminded me for some reason, of a couple of videos I watched a long time ago on Youtube, about weird and maybe individuals who were intelligent and functional enough to do some interesting projects.
One of these videos is about something called Time Cube and the other one is about TempleOS. Both of these videos are from the Youtuber Fredrik Knudsen, and if you are interested in this type of researches I also recommend checking out Nexpo and Atrocity Guide.
While I was watching this film, I was constantly thinking about the strange people from those videos and comparing them with the weird guy in the film. If the story in the film happened in real life, I am sure sooner or later the weird guy would eventually end up in some of those investigative videos.
Before talking about the film, let's briefly mention some of the people who worked on it.
Main names associated with the film
The director of the film is Colin Trevorrow, he hasn't directed many productions, less than 10 so far and of those only 3 are normal length films. However, those 3 films have all been great, besides Safety not Guaranteed, he has also directed The Book of Henry and Jurassic World. He seems to take his time before beginning a new project but when he does it is always a good one.
The writer of the story, and this is when the originality came from, is Derek Connolly. He seems to specialize in writing action stories because most of his work is in that type of production. He has worked in the series Lego Jurassic World: The Indominus Escape, the films Kong: Skull Island, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, among a few other productions. However, I believe Safety Not Guaranteed is his most original work because in those well-known action franchises I guess there must be some type of guidelines to keep the fans happy, but with the comedy, he surely had complete writing freedom to do whatever he wanted, and the result was a very memorable story.

In Safety not Guaranteed, her role is that of an intern who helps a magazine writing an article about the weird guy, and while doing so, she will discover many things that will change her life in unbelievable ways. Since the beginning of the film, this character gave me the impression that she was the type of person who is not judgmental and always open to new experiences.
Her boss in the movie is played by Jake Johnson who is well-known for participating in several comedies throughout the years. He had small roles in the films 21 Jump Street and Neighbors, and he played the main role in Let's Be Cops and the series New Girl. In Safety not Guaranteed, he is in charge of writing the article but the real reason why he wants to go to that town is to visit an old flame from his youth. He isn't entirely disciplined and appears to want to settle down after having lived a very intense party life throughout all of his life.
The weird guy is played by Mark Duplass, and this isn't the first time I see this actor playing a creep because he was also the main character in 2 films called Creep 1 and Creep 2, which I totally recommend watching if you like mystery-thriller filmed as a found footage film. He also worked in the films The One I Love and Your Sister's Sister. In Safety not Guaranteed, he is a guy crazy enough to put on an ad in the newspaper looking for a companion to time travel. How crazy is that?
Finally, another important member of the cast is the other intern who is also helping in the writing of the article, this character is played by Karan Soni who has also worked in many other productions such as Office Christmas Party, the Deadpool films, and Creep 2. Usually, his roles are small and I don't think he has ever played the main role in any production. In Safety not Guaranteed, he is a timid virgin guy who can't talk to girls and his boss will be trying to constantly help him and give him advice.
As we can see, the film has talented people all over the place so it is not a surprise this film turned out to be great.
What was the movie about?
The film begins with the character played by Aubrey Plaza telling a little bit about her present and her past life. She currently only has a job as an intern for a magazine, and I believe she was looking for something to spark her life and made her feel really alive once again. It is not like she was depressed, but she had a personal issue from the past that really affected her even to this day. When she hears the magazine is going to work on an article about a crazy guy who pretends he can time travel, she immediately requests to be included in the journey.
Soon enough, we have the editor and the 2 interns on a sort of road trip towards the town where the crazy guy lives. There will be some funny dialogues, most of the time involving either the virgin intern or the crazy guy.

¿De qué trataba la película?

Cuando escucha que la revista va a trabajar en un artículo sobre un loco que finge que puede viajar en el tiempo, inmediatamente solicita ser incluida en el trabajo.
Muy pronto, tenemos al editor y los 2 pasantes en una especie de viaje por carretera hacia la ciudad donde vive el loco. Habrá algunos diálogos divertidos, la mayoría de las veces involucrando al interno virgen o al loco.

The crazy guy lives an isolated life. His house is surrounded by woods and he doesn't appear to have any friends. He is convinced he can really time travel, and one of the things that's funny about him is that he is always acting a bit paranoid, thinking people are onto him, or that he is being persecuted and things like that. He has all the signs a crazy individual would have, but he also appears to be kind of healthy most of the time. He is really strange for sure.
As her field investigation advances, she begins to really get to know the weird guy, learn new stuff, and her views about him begin to change. She will have to help him do some crazy things in order to gain his trust, and slowly but surely, the movie will provide some nice surprises to the viewer. The big question is if this guy is really crazy or not, and by the end of the film the viewer will know for sure the correct answer.
Have in mind this is a comedy film mixed with some romance and a very original story, it doesn't have much drama but it really doesn't need it. The type of comedy isn't entirely silly which makes everything even more unique.
How were the performance from the cast, the writing and the camera work?
The cast did a terrific job playing their roles. I liked how everyone acted, and special mention for Mark Duplass for playing a strange character in just an appropriate way. I suspect he must be a bit of a weird guy in real life because he naturally plays this type of character with ease and expertise.
The writing of both the story and the dialogues were cool. The story, as mentioned before, is extremely original, entertaining, and allows for a lot of opportunities for comedic moments. The writer really did an amazing job. The camera work was acceptable but nothing special. There was no memorable angle shot or anything like that. What makes this movie so good, is the story, and the great performance of the main actress and actors.
Final thoughts
This is a worth-watching indie comedy that most people will surely enjoy. It is a feel-good film with a story that is entirely original and memorable. Most people in the mood for a nice comedy will surely have a good time watching this flick.
El loco vive una vida aislada. Su casa está rodeada de bosques y no parece tener amigos. Sospecho que debe ser un tipo un poco extraño en la vida real porque, naturalmente, interpreta a este tipo de personaje con facilidad y experiencia.

La mayoría de las personas que estén de humor para una buena comedia seguramente se divertirán viendo esta película.
