The Politician; The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story; Feud: Bette and Joan; Ryan Murphy; Glee; Pose.
Ryan Murphy signed a five-year deal with Netflix a few years ago, which is allegedly worth $300 million. You may know him from “Glee” or “American Horror Story” or “American Crime Story”, and maybe from “Nip/Tuck” if you are above a certain age.
He is a well-known producer and creator and writer.
But a $300-million guy?
These all are of high quality although not to my taste, and they’ve certainly attracted a wide audience.
And by saying “not to my taste”, I mean I didn’t fall in love with these shows, not that I didn't watch them.
I might not be a fan, but it wouldn’t be wrong to say that I am among the audience.
So, yeah, 300 million dollars suit him just fine.
(Still, I need to open parenthesis for “Eat, Pray, Love” – I’ve never understood the sensation it produced although I’ve appreciated the fact that it made some women -a few of them were my friend’s mums- go to India with their unfaithful husband’s money to find peace within themselves and end up having sex with young Indian boys. Then again, Murphy once said “If you’re not writing about women or gender or race, you’re not writing. He is not only pro-gay but also pro-women, so to give oppressed women a revenge opportunity may well be his intention from the beginning:))
"HOLLYWOOD"
His Netflix miniseries “Hollywood” is all about giving oppressed minorities including women, gays, Asian Americans, African Americans a never-given opportunity to change the history. In the series, an opportunity is given to a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers (by a woman on screen), and it leads to an imaginary, better version of Hollywood.
The miniseries has been criticized harshly for its messages.
I don’t think it has one; but yeah, some parts sound like it is blaming the minorities themselves for not having enough courage to come out of the closet. Then, who am I to judge?
I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me.
And it was also accused for being too shallow to deal with deep problems.
Oh, come on, it is a Netflix show, after all!
I have time for shallow Netflix series, so I saw it, but I wouldn’t recommend that you watch it unless you intentionally want to make a five-hour tour of Hollywood fairytale.
But I’ll recommend a show – this is only the intro of the post I am planning to write on another Netflix series of Ryan Murphy, “The Politician”!
Wait for it ‘cos I love it!

Netflix miniseries, "Hollywood".Bir süre önce Ryan Murphy’nin Netflix’le 300 milyon dolar değerinde beş yıllık bir sözleşme yaptığı haberleri gelmişti. Murphy’yi “Glee”den, “American Horror Story” veya “American Crime Story”den ya da yaşınız tutuyorsa “Nip/Tuck”tan hatırlarsınız.
Tanınmış bir yapımcı, yaratıcı ve yazardır kendileri.
Peki 300 milyon dolar eder mi?
Saydığım diziler her ne kadar benim zevkime hitap etmeseler de belli kalitede işler ve geniş bir izleyici kitlesi tarafından da sevildiler.
Ayrıca benim zevkime hitap etmediklerini söylerken kastettiğim bu dizilere ayılıp bayılmadığım; yoksa denk geldiğimde sırtımı dönüp kaçtığım işler değiller – gayet de izlemişimdir.
Yani Ryan Murphy hayranı olmayabilirim ama izleyici kitlesine dahil olduğumu söylemek yanlış olmaz.
Dolayısıyla, evet yani, adam 300 milyon dolar eder.
(Gerçi “Ye, Dua Et, Sev” için bir parantez açmam lazım. Millet bu filmin nesine bu kadar bayıldı, cidden hiçbir zaman anlayamayacağım. Yanlış anlamayın, bu filmi izleyen birtakım kadınların, Cem Yılmaz’ın tabiriyle huzuru “içlerinde” bulmak için, onları mütemadiyen aldatan kocalarının parasıyla Hindistan’a gidip orada genç Hintlilerle yatmalarını takdir etmediğimden değil. Nitekim Murphy’nin de bir keresinde “Eğer kadınlar, cinsiyet ve ırk hakkında yazmıyorsanız, bir şey yazmıyorsunuzdur” demişliği var. Yani bir gay ve gay hakları savunucusu olmanın yanı sıra ayrıca kadın hakları savunucusu da, dolayısıyla belki de bu filmi yapma amacı en başından itibaren ezilen kadınlara bir intikam fırsatı sunmaktır – kim bilir?)
Sonuçta Netflix’e yaptığı mini dizi, kadınlar, gayler, Asya kökenli Amerikalılar, Afrika kökenli Amerikalılar gibi ezilmiş azınlıklara tam da böyle bir fırsat vermek hakkında. Dizide bir grup aktör, senarist, yönetmen adayına bir kadın tarafından bir fırsat veriliyor ve vaktiyle aslında hiç verilmemiş olan bu fırsat sayesinde yeniden yazılan tarih bizi hayallerimizde bugünkü Hollywood’un çok daha iyi bir versiyonuna götürüyor. Çok karışık söyledim galiba, sadeleştireyim: Dizi temel olarak diyor ki eğer vaktiyle böyle bir fırsat verilmiş olsaydı bugün Hollywood daha şahane bir yer olurdu.
Dizi bu mesaj yüzünden değil ama bu mesajı doğru veremediği ve hatta yanlış mesajlar verdiği için eleştirmenler tarafından topa tutuldu.
Dizinin bir mesaj derdi olduğunu sanmıyorum, ama evet, bazı yerlerde azınlıkları yeterince cesur olmamakla suçladığı gibi bir anlam çıkarılabilir, doğru. Öte yandan ben kimim ki buna karar vereyim? Ryan Murphy'nin kendisi gay, niye gay'lere haksızlık etsin?
Bir de böylesi derin ve kökleşmiş sorunları ele alamayacak kadar sığ olduğu yazılıp çizildi.
E yani, ne bekliyorlardı ki, Netflix dizisi sonuçta!.
Benim sığ Netflix dizileri izleyecek zamanım var. Eğer beş saat boyunca bir Hollywood masalında dolanmayı özel olarak tercih etmiyorsanız, yoksa öyle bir vaktiniz, tabii ki size izlemenizi önerecek değilim.
Fakat bir dizi önereceğim. Bu post aslında benim başka bir Ryan Murphy dizisi hakkında yazacağım yazının girişi gibi bir şey oldu.
“The Politician”, az sonra, ya da işte birkaç gün içinde…

Yes 300 million dollars sounds a lot for any kind of contract, let alone being a glorified storyteller lol.
I have gotta agree with you 100% that the idea of a NF series being able to tackle truly deep issues seems a contradiction in terms. It often feels as though a profound message or moral is being approached and then it is skimmed over and dealt with in a 5 minute segment... Dissapointing.
It is endearing and should be commended that a far more diverse range of stories are being made for those who feel they are simply not being acknowledged within such media offerings and I am certain that will only be improved upon as people show their love for such creative projects.

As a streaming platform which aims at general audience, Netflix is doing its part in this respect I think.

"The Politician" is about z-generation. What I like most about it is that its imaginary discrimination-free world feels very real while everything else seems wonderfully absurd...
Not sure if this makes any sense - I'll write a post about it when I have the time.
