(Eduard "Del" Delacroix sosteniendo a Mr. Jingles)

Source

Life has not always been fair, it is said that in everyone dwells a pinch of cruelty. This time the film will portray how people based on prejudice were able to end the life of an innocent, not only John Coffey the accused of the story but also George Stinney Jr. a 14 year old boy who after being accused of a crime he did not commit was sentenced to the Electric Chair, will be a story based on real events with touches of fantasy and references that will be left to the interpretation of each of the viewers.

The film was directed by Frank Darabont who also directed "Dream of Escape". It is based on Stephen King's novel "Death Row" where a real life event is also told, its main protagonists are John Coffey (played by Michael Clarke Duncan) and Paul Edgecomb (played by Tom Hanks), however, the story shows a good development of all characters equally.

(Paul seated with Elaine Connelly)
Source

It all begins showing Paul Edgecomb who is a resident of a nursing home where he spends what are possibly the last years of his life, he is 108 years old which for his age looks quite healthy and has lived so long that all his friends and close people have died. One day, after watching a movie with the other elderly people, a friend from the nursing home questions his feelings after noticing that he was distressed by the movie, since it had awakened memories of his life as a Prison Guard. The two of them sit apart in another room where he comes clean and after so many years without talking about it with anyone, he decides to tell her about his life in Cold Mountain Prison.

(John shaking Paul's hand)
Source

The scenes show us John Coffey a black man, the new inmate sentenced to the electric chair for the alleged murder of two white girls, being escorted to his cell in E Block also called "The Green Mile" for its faded and worn green floor, where all those sentenced to the same fate are held. We are introduced to guards Brutus Howell (referred to as "Brutal"), Dean Stanton, Harry Terwilliger, Percy Wetmore and, finally, a 44-year-old Paul.

From the first moment you can tell by John's behavior that he has a mental disability, he is quiet, scared but with an innocent attitude like that of a child.

Already in the cell Paul reads John Coffey's file, discovering for the first time his name where he replies: "Like the drink, only it's not spelled the same". After the brief chat Paul introduces him to the guards and mentions that he can go to them for anything, before leaving John asks him to "Please don't turn off the lights as I'm afraid of the dark", after this he shakes Paul's hand saying goodbye. In John's face after everyone leaves we see a deep sadness that with the dimly lit environment of the cell conveys the first feelings to the viewer.

Source

Minutes after the film we see a chronological recapitulation after the reading of the documents of John's case by Paul, the event occurred in Louisiana where the events of what happened are shown. At the end of the scene we see a John hurt and shattered by what he found, giving us to understand that he only found the deceased girls but because of the geographical context and the year that surrounds him, his skin color played against him and he was judged right off the bat. However, although he told the Sheriff "I couldn't help it because it was too late" he decides to arrest him, a situation that leads us again to continue with the story.

(Arlen Bitterbuck talking to John)

Source

One of the first executions was that of Arlen Bitterbuck, a Native American who was locked up before John entered prison, after being prepared for his execution he talks to Paul about repentance with the following question "Do you think that if a man sincerely repents for what he did he could go back to the time that was happiest for him and live there forever? Is that paradise?", after the sentence he tells that his happiest time was with his wife and all the time he spent with her in the mountains, when they talked until dawn, for him it was what he loved the most. Giving us to understand that he believed in redemption, he repented and hoped to go to paradise, which Paul consoled him by telling him that he thought the same as he did.

A fact that is not mentioned is that he was there because of a fight he was in while drunk with another person in a Bar and that he killed the other person by hitting his head against a cement block, that is one of the reasons why he never protested even on his way to his death, accepting everything he did in a calm manner.

(Eduard "Del" Delacroix holding Mr. Jingles)

Source

Eduard was the second execution and the character who had the closest relationship with John, since thanks to a little mouse that had been around since Coffey arrived causing havoc, Delacroix managed to catch him and train him, becoming friends, so much so that Mr. Jingles, as he baptized him, learned to do tricks, leaving everyone amazed. Rattlesnake, as he christened him, learned to do tricks that amazed everyone. On one occasion Mr. Jingles was injured by a stomp from guard Percy who by his attitude was known to be a coward and someone who treated inmates with violence, he did it out of revenge against Eduard but what they did not expect was that John had a GIFT which he had previously demonstrated by curing Paul of a urinary infection, however, at that moment he approached the bars of his cell asking Mr. Jingles to save him leaving everyone perplexed by such a miracle.

From that moment on Delacroix became very close friends with John, it is known that Del had done something serious since what led him to jail and to be tried for the death was the murder of a young girl that he tried to hide by burning her body, in the process as he did it behind a building he ended up setting fire to part of it ending the lives of 6 more people. Thanks to the interactions he had with John it is also known that the latter was very remorseful of his actions and thanks to the DON he could know that Eduard no longer had a shred of evil in his heart.

Some of the phrases Delacroix said were; "Promise me that you will take Mr. Jingles to Villa Raton" and another was "I would like to have known them under different circumstances", referring to the fact that he and the guards could have been good friends since he considered them good people (for never treating him badly).

Unfortunately Eduard in his execution was sabotaged by the guard Percy, who hated him and generated one of the most painful deaths because he did not wet the sponge that was part of the process.

(John Coffey cures Warden's wife's tumor with his GIFT)
SOURCE

The greatest miracle that Coffey was seen to do was to cure the tumor of the warden's wife Melinda in her last moments of life saving her, one night he was taken to the warden's house, this shocked leaves with a rifle thinking that the guards had gone crazy, they explained that the only way to save his beloved would be for him, to which incredulous and doubtful without thinking much took the option to accept asking to please save her.

John went up to his room fearful, you could see on his face the sweat running down his face. He sits next to the lady, they talk briefly while Melinda asks her name, John introduces himself with her name and mentions "like the drink but written in a different way", he approaches her face opening his mouth, calms her, kisses her on the forehead and like a divine action begins to absorb all the bad in her body while the lights increase their intensity and a small earthquake occurs. From one moment to another by divine act she had been healed changing her appearance in a second, she had been saved.

Already as someone who had had a second chance, she sits on the bed without remembering what happened, she turns to John again asking his name and he answers but this time Melisa says for some reason "like the drink even though it is not spelled the same". She smiles at him and gives him a necklace as some gesture of thanks.

image.png
(Percy then received the ashes that John absorbed from Melissa.)

Source

John being returned to prison after curing Melissa feels very bad because whenever he absorbs someone's evil he must expel it, this time he kept it. Percy was asleep in a room because of some sedatives they gave him to get John out without him knowing, after waking up and walking very close to the fence Coffey pulls him towards him passing from his body to Percy's body all the evil that was inside him. As if he was in a trance he stopped responding, the guards restrain him and he just walks away, he walks towards the inmate William Wharton subject that after a vision John knew he was responsible for the murder of the girls he found and for which he was sentenced to death, he pulls out his gun and immediately ends William's life instantly.

John at no time does that with an intention of revenge, he only sought to put an end to the evil and atrocities that William had done.

(The execution of John Coffey)

Source

Early before the execution Paul goes to see John with Brutal asking him what he would like to do, they will help him escape if he wishes. Paul is terrified as he is afraid of going to hell for executing a miracle of God, John assures Paul that he is a good man and that he has nothing to worry about, that it has to happen. John mentions that he is tired of being alone and wants it all to end, he is tired of people being mean to each other and the evil in the world.

The only thing he asks is to see a movie since he has never seen one, the guards take him and coincidentally it is the same movie that starts the story, the one that made Paul sad.

The hour of execution begins with John walking down the corridor of worn green floor, he goes smiling telling a dream he had where there were many children and the poor girls who were hurt in a place where everyone laughed with Mr. Jingles and his tricks. They enter the room and he feels how everyone there hates him, they sit him down and prepare him while all the guards slowly collapse at every move they make, they can't help but hold back tears or regret every second for what they are going to do, they prepare him and when they put the mask on him John says "please don't cover his face because he is afraid of the dark", Paul agrees, he approaches John, takes him by the hand and walks away again, he gives the orders stuttering and so between tears and sadness .... John leaves this world behind where he will no longer be able to fear anymore having at last a break from it all.

(Paul in his bed back to his present in the asylum)

SOURCE

Near the end we can see a Paul who since the death of John retired and all his life has regretted the injustice he had to commit, how to kill a miracle worker of the Lord, an innocent will haunt him until his last days. 108 Years, he has lived and buried all his loved ones, he wonders if GOD punishes him for what he did and asks for his life to end soon, he wishes that death finds him much sooner because his GREEN MILE seems very long at times....

This movie honestly made me cry, feel very connected at all times with each scene, feel John's pain and fear. To know that life and people can be cruel, that there are things that can't be avoided and that forgiveness exists, unfortunately both John and George Stinney Jr. were noble and innocent people who didn't deserve to suffer.

This movie is so so so emotional that my eyes were wet, and I was crying for whatever had happened. Have you watched Miracle in cell no 7?

Every time I watch it my eyes get wet too. Yes, I saw that movie and I also found it quite emotional, I may bring it back soon:)

Saludos!

Créeme, no te va a defraudar.

Saludos! 👋
