Last week I made a mistake in the League of Movies entry (HIVE WRITING CONTEST), Second Edition Week 03. I made a TV series as an entry, and that of course did not comply with the rules of the contest, and it was very bad news. This time I do not want to be wrong and miss information, fortunately, I made one mistake, because with mistakes we finally know what should be right to do, right?
This is my entry for League of Movies (HIVE WRITING CONTEST), Second Edition Week 04, initiated by @wiseagent. If you want to join and are interested in this challenge you can see the rules in the post below:
Initially, I thought, Hellboy [2019] was a sequel movie that I had watched in 2004 and 2008 by the maestro who successfully conducted a number of monster movie Guillermo del Toro. After watching Hellboy [2019], I looked back at the casting, and sure enough, there was no Ron Perlman name there, the man was more successful starring Hellboy [2004] and Hellboy II: The Golden Army [2008].
Hellboy [2019] is a reboot movie directed by Neill Marshall and David Harbor to get the opportunity to replace the role attached to Ron Perlman a decade ago.
In Neill Marshall's claim, I did not feel like watching Hellboy [2004] and Hellboy II: The Golden Army [2008]. The story is too monotonous, a lot of monologues that make us bored watching a movie that is supposed to present action, humor, and mystery.
Admittedly, the plot in Hellboy has unlimited potential. Unfortunately, this was not put to good use by Neil Marshall as a director and in a manuscript written by Andrew Crosby.
Previous Hellboy movies managed to steal the hearts of the audience so that the Hellboy character became one of the favorite characters and gained tremendous popularity.
No wonder in 2008, Hellboy had the opportunity to get a sequel titled Hellboy II: The Golden Army. This duology has become a high enough standard that it seems to be difficult to make a third film that achieves the same quality. And that was proven, in Hellboy [2019] unable to reach the climax even though I spent 2 hours in front of the TV screen and occasionally sleepy watching it.
Being a reboot, David Harbor gets a chance as a new actor to portray the iconic character of Hellboy. Having seen the extraordinary acting skills in the original Netflix Stranger Things series, it is not surprising that David Harbor is the leading candidate for Hellboy.
Although there are some skeptics about this reboot project, the duet Neil Marshall and David Harbor are arguably making Hellboy one of the most awaited films in 2019. Unfortunately, the final product that the audience gets is far from satisfying and fails to satisfy Hellboy fans.
Hellboy (2019) becomes a story 'origin' Hellboy discovers an identity that tells the story of Nimue's revival of an evil ancient witch who was trying to rule the world. Throughout the movie, Hellboy is repeatedly confronted with conflicts and dilemmas regarding his true identity.
You will be treated to a little flashback scene at the beginning of the film. Nimue (Milla Jovovich), a violent witch who lived in the days of the British empire, was executed by King Arthur (Mark Stanley). Could not be killed, King Arthur decided to separate the body parts of Nimue and hidden to various corners of the world.
The story continues with the journey of a half-demon human journey nicknamed Anung Un Rama. Called to Planet Earth to help Nazi forces win the second world war, Hellboy was finally adopted by Professor Broom (Ian McShane), a senior at B.P.R.D (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) and taught to be a human protector.
While investigating the disappearance of a B.P.R.D agent, Hellboy realized that an evil force was about to be resurrected, namely Nimue. The protagonist finally has to fight with himself after realizing the fate that is already written.
This ambitious story that has the potential to be extraordinary is tainted by boring action and bland humor that fails to make the audience laugh. One of the things that makes Del Toro's film Hellboy special is none other than the balance between action, humor, and the manifestation of conflict from the dilemma Hellboy feels realistic. Neil Marshall's Hellboy seems to fail in every aspect.
In this film, I feel tired of the character of Hellboy who seemed busy with his own world. Many subplots are offered throughout this film, but there are also many subplots that don't seem important or don't have a satisfying ending.
Various history and background of the story are also poured into the audience through narration which becomes an exposition that seems not to be 'smart.'
The single most interesting action that caught my attention was when Hellboy had to deal with three giants at once. The rest of the action displayed was arguably very disappointing, although Milla Jovovich [my favorite actress] managed to portray the figure of an evil witch.

I saw that in Hellboy 2019, the action scenes displayed were too dependent on visual effects so that I felt that it actually reduced the tension felt by the audience. We feel aware that the visuals displayed in front of us are nothing but the result of man-made digital imaging. With its R rating, it is a pity the action in this movie is no more riveting than the Hellboy (2004) which only has a PG-13 rating.
The iconic Hellboy, as if unable to help this film to look charming. Moreover, other characters around Hellboy are also unable to give performances that can make the audience amazed.
It is unfortunate, the story that woke up for two hours in this movie must end with an anticlimax ending. When the protagonist is confronted with the main villain, Neil Marshall chooses to take an unexpected conclusion, but fails to fascinate, far from the expectations of the audience. And in my opinion, Hellboy [2019] is like an unexpected reboot, that's all. Oya, to catch a glimpse of the Hellboy reboot trailer you can watch it below.
Nice entry, @ericha. Hellboy is a very spooky creature from the underworld.
Good luck in the contest.
