Wow, I totally agree! The intro to Peacemaker is a gem, something crazy that no one expected. When I first saw it, I was like, “What is this?!” but I was hooked instantly. It's one of those things you have to watch more than once just to catch all the details of the choreography, which is ridiculous and serious at the same time.
And yes, it's great that superhero series are exploring that “gray area” you mention. It's what makes characters like Peacemaker more interesting, seeing the person behind the costume with all their personal issues and bad decisions. It gives them a depth that is sometimes missing. James Gum really had to stand up to DC to change the whole way things are seen. This, added to the potential that can be seen in the structural changes from how he used to do everything before, took the things that interested him and simply made them known above all else, thus giving us a fairly well-structured formula for how the cinematic universe can be combined.
