Greetings, movie and series lovers! 🎥
Hello everyone, Hive friends, today I want to share a new review, this time I want to talk about a series... and get ready, because I have a lot to say, today I will talk about: I Know What You Did Last Summer... when I found out that they were going to make a series like this, the truth is, I was like "let's see how it goes", you know? I mean, the nineties movie is a CLASSIC, so I jumped in, ready for a good old-school teenage scare... let me tell you... it was quite a ride, and not always in the prettiest way, the thing about this series is that, it kind of divided opinions, and to be honest, I totally understand why, the first four episodes hooked me! it felt like they wanted to grab that original vibe, but with a newer, more 2021 twist.
The vibe is the same: a group of teenagers in a town full of secrets, a horrible accident on their prom night, and a year later, a mysterious killer starts hunting them, classic, right? The cast, honestly, for the most part, seemed pretty good to me.. they managed to create characters that sometimes you root for and other times you just wanted them to be over, speaking of the story, it turns out that these guys are driving after their prom and BOOM!, they run over someone. Instead of doing the right thing, they make some TERRIBLE decisions and decide to get rid of the body.
But here comes the good part, and where the family stuff gets really dense and complicated: it is revealed that the person they ran over is the twin sister of the girl who was driving, Lennon. Madison Iseman plays the twins, Allison and Lennon, and they're really good. At times, it was a bit of a chore trying to figure out who was who, especially with so many flashbacks. One had glitter on her face, the other didn't; that was my main cue most of the time, this whole twin thing, and the super weird, almost toxic relationship between them, becomes a HUGE part of the story... plus there's a ton of drama between Lennon and his dad, which adds another layer to the whole mess.
Hola a todos, amigos de Hive, hoy les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, está vez les quiero hablar de una serie.. y prepárense, porque tengo mucho que decir, hoy les hablaré de: I Know What You Did Last Summer.. cuando me enteré de que iban a sacar una serie de esta onda, la verdad, me entró como un “a ver qué tal”, ¿saben? O sea, la película de los noventa es un CLÁSICO, así que me aventé, listo para un buen sustito adolescente de la vieja escuela.. déjenme decirles… fue todo un viaje, y no siempre por el caminito más bonito, lo que pasa con esta serie es que, como que dividió las opiniones, y siendo honestos, entiendo perfectamente por qué, los primeros cuatro episodios me engancharon! se sentía como que querían agarrar esa vibra original, pero con un toque más nuevo, más del 2021..
La onda es la misma: un grupo de adolescentes en un pueblo lleno de secretos, un accidente horrible en su noche de graduación, y un año después, un asesino misterioso empieza a cazarlos, lo clásico, ¿no? El elenco, la verdad, en su mayoría, me pareció bastante bien.. lograron crear personajes que a veces apoyas y otras veces solo querías que ya les tocara, hablando de la historia, resulta que estos compas van manejando después de su fiesta de graduación y ¡PUM!, atropellan a alguien.. en lugar de hacer lo correcto, toman unas decisiones ¡DE TERROR! y deciden deshacerse del cuerpo.
Pero aquí viene lo bueno, y donde los rollos familiares se ponen bien densos y complicados: se revela que la persona que atropellaron es la hermana gemela de la chica que iba manejando, Lennon. Madison Iseman hace de las dos gemelas, Allison y Lennon, y la verdad, lo hacen bien, a veces era una locura tratar de entender quién era quién, sobre todo con tanto flashback. Una traía brillitos en la cara, la otra no; esa era mi pista principal casi siempre, esta onda de las gemelas, y la relación súper rara, casi tóxica entre ellas, se vuelve una parte GIGANTE de la historia.. además, hay un montón de drama entre Lennon y su papá, lo que le añade otra capa más a todo este cochinero.
Now, look, even with that initial promise, I was already starting to have my doubts... like, why the HELL did they give it that name, I mean, yeah, it has things from the 90s movie, which in turn was based on the 70s book, and mind you, even those two already had their very marked differences... the book, if I remember correctly, didn't even have a single dead person! This series, on the other hand, does accumulate a good handful of corpses, but it's kind of... reserved, at times, to show them. You'll see someone about to be attacked, and then BAM!, cut to the characters finding the body... like you're like: "Ah, well, I guess that's enough"... but the connection to the title felt... weak, like it was hanging on with tweezers. It felt more like a teen drama with slasher vibes, especially in the beginning, rather than a hardcore slasher like the movie. There’s a TON of teen angst, secrets, people hooking up with other people, betrayals; you know, your typical high school drama turned up to the max… and the setting!
They filmed it in Hawaii, on Oahu, and it’s a beauty, seriously! Some of the locations felt super familiar to me, and it gave this beautiful, almost creepy backdrop to all the darkness. My only but, and it’s a minor thing, is that I would have loved to see more of the local Polynesian culture, for it to be shown off more. There are a few scenes or two, but I felt like they could have packed more into it, instead of just it being a pretty place and that’s it. But back to the story… as much as the mystery was intriguing in those first episodes, I had a couple of suspects in my sights, and they weren’t the same! I was completely wrong, there were things that started to bother me. The repetitive flashbacks, for example, showed you the same things over and over again, maybe from a slightly different angle, but it almost never added anything new... then the way the show OVER-EXPLAINS things sometimes?
Oh my God, how maddening! There's a revelation in the first episode, and it's pretty obvious, but then they show you the scene that confirms it, and then they show it again IN THE SAME EPISODE! I literally thought the second episode had already started and they were on the "previously on..." thing. Nope! It was like the show was saying, "Look, idiot, you don't seem to understand this, so here it goes again." It was so insulting, it almost made me want to stop watching right then and there.
Ahora, miren, incluso con esa promesa inicial, yo ya empezaba a tener mis dudas.. como, a ver, ¿por qué RAYOS le pusieron ese nombre, o sea, sí, tiene cositas de la peli de los 90, que a su vez se basó en el libro de los 70, y ojo, que incluso esas dos ya tenían sus diferencias bien marcadas.. el libro, si mal no recuerdo, ¡ni siquiera tenía un solo muerto! Esta serie, en cambio, sí que acumula un buen puño de cadáveres, pero es medio… reservada, a veces, para mostrarlo. Van a ver a alguien a punto de que lo ataquen, y luego ¡PUM!, corte a los personajes encontrando el cuerpo.. como que dices: "Ah, bueno, supongo que con eso basta".. pero la conexión con el título se sentía… flojita, como agarrada con pinzas. Se sintió más como un drama de adolescentes con toques de slasher, sobre todo al principio, en lugar de un slasher de hueso colorado como la película, hay un MONTÓN de angustia adolescente, secretos, gente enrollándose con otra gente, traiciones; ya saben, el típico drama de prepa pero elevado a la mil potencia.. y el escenario!
La filmaron en Hawái, en Oahu, y es una belleza, ¡enserio! Algunas locaciones se me hacían súper familiares, y le daba este fondo precioso, casi escalofriante, a toda la oscuridad. Mi único "pero", y es una cosita de nada, es que me hubiera encantado ver más de la cultura polinesia local, que la lucieran más, hay una escenita o dos, pero sentí que pudieron meterle más, en lugar de que solo fuera un lugar bonito y ya. Pero volviendo a la historia.. por mucho que dio curiosidad el misterio en esos primeros capítulos, tenía un par de sospechosos en la mira, y ¡nada que ver!, estaba totalmente de equivocado, hubo cosas que me empezaron a molestar. La repetidera de los flashbacks, por ejemplo, te mostraban las mismas cosas una y otra vez, tal vez desde un ángulo un poquito diferente, pero casi nunca aportaba nada nuevo.. luego, ¿la forma en que la serie a veces te SOBREEXPLICA las cosas?
Ay, Dios mío, qué desesperante! Hay una revelación en el primer episodio, y es bastante obvia, pero luego te muestran la escenita que lo confirma, ¡y luego te la vuelven a pasar EN EL MISMO EPISODIO! Yo literal, pense que ya había empezado el segundo capítulo y estaban con el "anteriormente en...". ¡Pues no! Era como si la serie te estuviera diciendo: "A ver, menso, como que no te da para entender esto, así que ahí te va otra vez". Fue súper insultante, casi casi me hizo querer dejar de verla en ese mismísimo momento.
Look, despite those little red flags from the beginning, the mystery of who the killer was DID have me hooked. I wanted to know! And the series has a good amount of sex, nudity, violence, and swearing. I mean, it's definitely for a younger adult audience. When things get good, with the chase and the violence, it's actually pretty well done. There's quite a bit of blood and some deaths that are actually pretty brutal. So, at those moments, it did give you that slasher fun you're looking for... but then... oh, then we got to the second half of the season, and that's when things took a nosedive. Badly! Around episode six, I remember thinking, "This is getting really boring." It started to feel super convoluted, with so much information and so many things happening at the same time that you didn't even know what was really important anymore... all that mom and cult stuff?
Completely unnecessary! I spent a good while thinking, "Okay, the cult is behind all the deaths, that's it!" And then... well, no, it just fizzled out and led to nothing. They could have cut all that out, and the show would have definitely been shorter and better... honestly, I started to lose interest, so badly. I'd find myself grabbing my phone, surfing YouTube, pausing the show for an hour... That's never a good sign, NEVER. It seemed like the writers didn't even know who the killer was until they were already filming the ending. I read somewhere that not even the actors knew, and looking back, I totally believe them! The ending was... a disaster, just like that... the reveal of the killer felt so pulled out of thin air, like they'd seen who was left and said, "It's going to be you!" The whole thing was so poorly put together that the killer literally has to give a monologue to explain his motives and the whole plan right before the credits roll, because nothing was explained properly beforehand, it was just... pfff, a total letdown.
Miren, a pesar de esas banderitas rojas desde el principio, el misterio de quién era el asesino SÍ me tenía enganchado, yo quería saber! Y la serie tiene un buen de sexo, desnudos, violencia y palabrotas, o sea, clarito que es para un público más adulto joven, cuando la cosa se pone buena, con la persecución y la violencia, la verdad es que está bastante bien hecha, hay bastante sangre y algunas muertes que sí están bien brutales. Así que, en esos momentos, sí te daba esa diversión slasher que uno busca.. pero entonces… ay, entonces llegamos a la segunda mitad de la temporada, y ahí la cosa se fue en picada, ¡mal! Como por el episodio seis, me acuerdo que pensé: "esto ya se está poniendo bien aburrido". Se empezó a sentir súper enredado, con un montón de información y tantas cosas, pasando al mismo tiempo que ya ni sabías qué era lo importante de verdad.. toda esa onda de la mamá y la secta?
Completamente innecesaria! Me pasé un buen rato pensando: "Ok, la secta está detrás de todas las muertes, ¡ya está!". Y luego… pues no, simplemente se esfumó y no llevó a nada, pudieron haber quitado todo eso, y la serie seguro hubiera sido más cortita y mejor.. sinceramente, empecé a perder el interés, así feo. Me encontraba agarrando el celular, navegando en YouTube, pausando la serie por una hora… Eso nunca es buena señal, NUNCA, parecía como si los guionistas ni siquiera supieran quién era el asesino hasta que ya estaban grabando el final. Leí por ahí que ni los actores sabían, y viéndolo, ¡les creo totalmente! El final fue… un desastre, así, sin más.. la revelación del asesino se sintió tan sacada de la manga, como si hubieran visto quién quedaba y hubieran dicho: "tú vas a ser!". Estuvo tan mal armada la cosa que el asesino, literal, tiene que echarse un monólogo para explicar sus motivos y todo el plan justo antes de que salgan los créditos, porque nada te lo explicaron bien antes, fue simplemente… pfff, un bajón total.
And then they have to drop the bait for a second season right before it ends... seeing how it's been doing online, I'd be really surprised if they even gave it to them. It's like when you're in the middle of a romance, everything's going amazing, you two are super into it, and then all of a sudden, when the good part comes, it's just... meh, just like that. I was so fed up with it, I don't even think I'll want to rewatch it to see if I missed anything because honestly, I was probably on my phone because I was bored to death... it's a real shame because it started off really hard, right?
Those first four episodes had me hooked, they really did. If they had squeezed all the good stuff into like four, maybe five or six episodes, it could have been a perfect miniseries... but eight one-hour episodes? No, well, they just dragged it out like that, the whole thing felt bloated, like it was filled in... so, if I had to give it a rating... wow, it's difficult. The first half had potential, yes... but the second half falls flat. I'm going to give it a 3.5/10. I almost didn't want to talk about it because I felt like it wasn't worth wasting energy on, but that ending... the series doesn't even deserve that title... and well, that's it for my review today... Y luego, tienen que dejarte ahí el anzuelo para una segunda temporada justo antes de que acabe.. viendo cómo le ha ido en internet, me sorprendería muchísimo que se la den, es como cuando estás en el mero romance, todo va increíble, los dos están súper metidos, y de repente, cuando llega el momento bueno, es un… meh, así nomás. Terminé tan harto, ni siquiera creo que quiera volver a verla para ver si se me pasó algo, porque sinceramente, lo más seguro es que estaba en el celular porque me estaba muriendo de aburrimiento.. es una verdadera lástima, porque empezó con todo, ¿eh? Esos primeros cuatro episodios me tenían atrapado, de verdad que sí.
Si hubieran apretado todo lo bueno en unos cuatro, o tal vez cinco o seis episodios, pudo haber sido una miniserie perfecta.. pero, ¿ocho episodios de una hora? No, pues así nomás lo alargaron a lo tonto, todo se sintió inflado, como con relleno.. así que, si tuviera que ponerle una calificación… híjole, está difícil. La primera mitad tenía potencial, sí.. pero la segunda mitad se estrella. Le voy a dar un 3.5/10. Casi ni quería hablar de esto porque sentía que ni valía la pena gastar energía, pero ese final… la serie ni siquiera se merece ese título.. y bueno, hasta aquí mi reseña de hoy.. espero que les haya gustado, cuidense mucho!
