Robert Eggers' new film throws us into the world of the Vikings and bases the legend of Amleth.
In the first half of the film we learn about the young years of the main character Amleth, where, being the son of a king, he sees a massacre and the seizure of the throne. He decides to avenge the death of his father.
The film follows him from adolescence to adulthood, until the time when he can take his revenge. Northman does not rush the action, builds tension, gives the viewer a chance to breathe, although the second half of the film is limping in places, so the third act simply bombards the viewer with various titbits.
It has been known for a long time, that Robert Eggers is able to create an extraordinary work, and every film is between dream and reality. Often in the film there are various symbols that foreshadow certain events. It's a road movie and a revenge movie, but hardening in the belief that revenge is actually a dead end.
Although the film lasts 135 minutes, it draws the viewer into this unusual Scandinavian atmosphere, giving the feeling of communing with warriors from an earlier era.
The main character played by Alexander Skarsgård plays very well although his facial expression lacked some of that madness.
The story itself may strongly remind of William Shakespeare's novels where in Hamlet we had a perfect example of how revenge influences a man. Here, in this story, our hero lives for revenge, even when it turns out that he can run away somewhere far away and have a peaceful life next to his beloved, he prefers revenge, because revenge was written for him from a young age.
Of course, the film couldn't do without the charismatic and intensely wacky Willem Dafoe, who plays an interesting though brief role.
Watching Northman, I felt on one hand the repetitiveness of the material (the road and revenge), on the other beautiful views. However, the middle part of the film lacked something that could have made you squirm in your seat, but instead we get a long reflection on the revenge plan, which unfortunately was a bit boring at times.
The film also has an editing error in the scene where the Valkyrie appears to be carrying the hero to Wallhala (a dream).
The film is full of ambiguous allusions as to whether the hero is sane or not. It is best shown in the sword fight scene where we have a double sequence of this fight.
To sum up, this is not a chilling film like Lighthouse, closer to Shakespeare's work than to the madness the director indulged in.
It's a film that doesn't have much to show besides revenge, although the plot of lying revenge is interesting, the atmosphere dies down somewhere in the middle of the film.

The beginning is very promising and one can even feel a slight hint of Lovecraft apart from the Viking. However, later on the director wanted to show it in a rather gentle tone too much which makes the initial idea disappear in the middle part and only in the final part we again feel that anxiety and atmosphere from the beginning, that hint of Robert's madness.

W pierwszej połowie filmu poznajemy młode lata głównego bohatera jakim jest Amleth, gdzie będąc synem króla widzi masakrę oraz przejęcie tronu. Postanawia pomścić smierć swojego ojca.
Film pokazuje losy od lat młodzieńczych po dorosłe, aż czas kiedy może dokonać zemsty. Northman nie spieszy się z akcja, buduje napięcie, daje widzowi często odetchnąć, choć druga połowa miejscami kuleje, tak trzeci akt wręcz bombarduje widza różnymi smaczkami.
Nie od dziś wiadome jest, ze Robert Eggers potrafi stworzyć nietuzinkowe dzieło i każdy film jest między snem, a jawa i tak jest tutaj. Często w filmie przejawiają się różne symbole zwiastujące pewne wydarzenia. To film drogi i zemsty, ale utwardzające w przekonaniu, ze zemsta tak naprawdę jest ślepym zaułkiem.
Film mimo, ze trwa 135 minut wciąga widza w ten niezwykły skandynawski klimat dając poczucie obcowania z wojownikami dawnej epoki.
Główny bohater grany przez Alexandera Skarsgårda gra bardzo dobrze choć z jego wyrazu twarzy zabrakło trochę tego obłędu na duży plus jest fakt, ze jest Z Skandynawi, wiec wręcz mógł dobrze oddać postać jaka odgrywa.
Sama historia mocno może przywodzić powieści Williama Shakespeare’a gdzie w Hamlecie tez mieliśmy wręcz idealny przykład jak zemsta wpływa na człowieka. Tutaj w tej opowieści nasz bohater żyje dla zemsty, nawet kiedy okazuje się, ze może uciec gdzieś daleko i mieć spokojne życie obok ukochanej, woli zemstę, gdyż zemsta była mu pisana od młodych lat.
Oczywiście nie mogło w filmie zabraknąć charyzmatycznego i mocno szalonego Willema Dafoe, który gra ciekawa choć krótka role.
Oglądając Northmana, czułem, z jednej strony powtarzalność materiału( droga i zemsta), z drugiej piękne widoki. Mimo wszystko w środkowym etapie filmu zabrakło coś co mogło by wręcz gnieść w fotel, a tak dostajemy długie rozmyślanie nad planem zemsty, co niestety miejscami bywało trochę nudne.
Film ma tez błąd montażowy w scenie Gdzie pojawia się Walkiria która wiezie Do Wallhali bohatera ( sen) Walkiria ma aparat na zebach i trochę dziwnie oglądało się ta scenę.
Film jest przepełniony dwuznacznymi aluzjami jeśli chodzi o to czy bohater poczytalny czy tez nie. Najlepiej ukazuje to scena walki o miecz gdzie mamy podwójna sekwencje owej walki.
Podsumowując to nie jest film mrożący krew w żyłach jak Lighthouse, bliżej filmowi do twórczości Szekspira niż szaleństwa jakim oddawał się reżyser.
To film, który prócz zemsty nie ma wiele do ukazania choć wątek kłamliwej zemsty jest ciekawy to jednak gdzieś klimat siada w połowie filmu.

Początek jest mega obiecujący i wręcz czuć prócz Wikinga lekka nutę Lovecrafta, jednak później zbyt mocno reżyser chciał ukazać w dość łagodnym tonie przez co początkowy zamysł w środkowej części umyka, a dopiero w finalne znów czujemy ten niepokój i klimat z początku ta nutkę Szaleństwa Roberta.

So all in all, would you recommend watching this movie? It seems like you are being a little disappointed by it, if you only giving out 6/10. But then also you could just be very critical :D
The movie isn't bad, the middle is a little worse, but the beginning and end came out very well in my opinion. If you have seen Lighthouse, it lacks atmosphere. You can see that the director is trying to show something, but he makes long stretches where there is no need. The film itself is ok and you can watch it, I just have a tendency to die sometimes.
Man this movie... The directing skills from egger are incredible. He has a unic vision and i love it.
