In the fourteenth century the Black Death struck all of medieval Europe manifesting a mystical terror among the European population that was annihilated by 25 percent. This plague led to a religious chaos and a daze among people who only knew a supposed religious outlet in the face of such discomfort, so much so that many of the remedies contained written parts of the Bible.
The film places us in this scenario but it really is an analogy to the existential malaise of the human being. This is a film that despite its short duration is dense, handling deep philosophical codes and emphasizing existentialism and directly sowing the doubt of the existence of God.
En el siglo XIV la peste negra azoto a toda la Europa medieval manifestando un terror místico entre la población europea que fue aniquilada en un 25 por ciento. Esta peste propicio un caos religioso y un aturdimiento entre las personas que solo conocían una supuesta salida religiosa ante semejante malestar, tanto así que muchos de los remedios contenían partes escritas de la biblia.
La película nos sitúa en este escenario pero realmente es una analogía al malestar existencial del ser humano. Esta es una película que pese a su corta duración es densa, manejando profundos códigos filosóficos y haciendo hincapié en el existencialismo y sembrando directamente la duda de la existencia de Dios.
Antonious Block is a knight who crosses death and this, not having found any meaning in life, decides to entertain the scythe with a game of chess, mentioning that if he wins he will get rid of death itself, but this is just an excuse to get the time to clear up philosophical doubts that pertained to his life, his faith and the meaning of existence. Soon death decides to stop the game and give Antonious more time.
Antonious Block es un caballero que se cruza con la muerte y este al no haberle encontrado sentido alguno a la vida decide entretener a la guadaña con un juego de ajedrez mencionando que si gana se librara de la muerte en si, pero esto es solo una excusa para conseguir el tiempo necesario para despejar dudas filosóficas que le atañían a su vida, su fe y el sentido de la existencia. Pronto la muerte decide parar el juego y darle más tiempo a Antonious.
On his way, Antonious is with his squire who is an important character in the work since he represents the antithesis of the medieval common citizen, moving away from any metaphysical claim, being a pragmatic man and almost approaching the philosophy of Nietzsche. In many dialogues Squire Jons (the squire) mentions his blatant rejection of religion, positioning his life as the joy of life and of the will.
En su camino, Antonious esta con su escudero quien es un importante personaje en la obra ya que representa la antítesis del ciudadano común medieval, alejándose de cualquier pretensión metafísica, siendo un hombre pragmático y casi acercándose a la filosofía de Nietzsche. En muchos diálogos Squire Jons (el escudero) menciona su rechazo descarado hacia la religión, posicionando su vida como el goce vital y de la voluntad.
Later on we will get together with the rest of the cast as they are a couple of actors who roam the streets flaunting the free spirit of the artist but also the misinterpretations that they can have by conservative and irrational characters.
My favorite character is undoubtedly Jons, since despite his pragmatism he has his own moral code rejecting religion as an imposition and doing justice with his own hands. Sometimes Jons can be a bit vile person but at least he is someone authentic.
Más adelante nos conseguiremos con el resto del elenco como lo son una pareja de actores que vagabundean en las calles haciendo alarde al espíritu libre del artista pero también de las malinterpretaciones que estos pueden llegar a tener por personajes conservadores e irracionales.
Mi personaje favorito sin duda es Jons, ya que pese a su pragmatismo tiene su propio código moral desechando a la religión como imposición y haciendo justicia con sus propias manos. En ciertas ocasiones Jons puede llegar a ser una persona un poco vil pero al menos es alguien autentico.
Block's desperation is more than understandable and I have put myself in his place not for religious reasons but because of a deep existential crisis in trying to make sense of a life without purpose. That is why it is important to have a conviction and a purpose that drives us and gives us enough energy to continue ahead, otherwise we will be lost forever.
While the film is based on medieval times and the cultural backwardness that this posed for 14th-century Europe, a perfect analogy can be drawn in modern times. It is almost a fact that director Bergman tried to reflect the concerns of modern times by making a fable about the Black Death. Agnosticism and doubt are the main philosophical axis of the work that is full of dialogues that show us the director's concerns.
Whenever I see a Bergman film I try to focus on every detail of the dialogue as it is dense and you have to read a lot between the lines and interpret what the director wanted to say. This is not a movie to spend on a Friday night but to reflect on our existence and identity as human beings. A film that attracts universal and worrying concepts, which little by little have been fading.
La desesperación de Block es más que entendible y yo me he puesto en su lugar no por razones religiosas sino por una profunda crisis existencial al intentar darle sentido a una vida sin propósito. Por eso es importante tener una convicción y un propósito que nos impulse y nos de la suficiente energía para seguir delante de lo contrario estaremos perdidos para siempre.
Si bien la película se basa en la época medieval y en el retraso cultural que esta supuso para la Europa del siglo XIV, se puede sacar una perfecta analogía en tiempos modernos. Es casi un hecho que el director Bergman trato de reflejar las inquietudes de los tiempos modernos haciendo una fábula con la peste negra. El agnosticismo y la duda son el eje filosófico principal de la obra que está repleta de diálogos que nos demuestras las inquietudes del director.
Siempre que veo una película de Bergman trato de enfocarme en cada detalle de los diálogos ya que son densos y hay que leer mucho entre líneas e interpretar lo que quiso decir el director. Esta no es una película para pasar un viernes en la noche sino para reflexionar acerca de nuestra existencia e identidad como ser humano. Una película que atrae conceptos universales y preocupantes, que poco a poco se han ido desvaneciendo.
Apart from the philosophical side, it is also worth commenting on the historical aspect and the deep ignorance that plagued the European streets. The crisis of a plague in a town that had gone back in time plunging into a dangerous darkness that would kill millions of lives. I think that the main plague was not the black one but the ignorance that seduced millions of souls with archaic and fundamentalist ideas.
There are many scenes that are worth highlighting such as the scene of the chess game and its dialogues only at the beginning of the film but in general terms the film is gloomy, dark and with an exotic mix of harsh reality and masked fantasy.
This is another of the great recommendations that I can contribute to this community, a cult classic and a film with a strong philosophical charge that can leave us stunned after watching an hour and a half of the film. However, it is worth mentioning that all Bergman's films are like that and this is a review that does not merit the great work. Rather, this text seeks to express a largely opinion and appreciation of one of the best cinematographic works of all time.
Aparte del lado filosófico también vale la pena comentar acerca del aspecto histórico y la profunda ignorancia que embargaba a las calles europeas. La crisis de una peste en un pueblo que había retrocedido en el tiempo sumergiéndose en un oscurantismo peligroso que asesinaría millones de vidas. Pienso que la principal peste no fue la negra sino la ignorancia que sedujo a millones de almas con ideas arcaicas y fundamentalistas.
Hay muchas escenas que valen la pena destacar como la escena del juego de ajedrez y sus diálogos solo al empezar la película pero en términos generales la película es sombría, oscura y con una mezcla exótica de cruda realidad y de fantasía enmascarada.
Esta es otra de las grandes recomendaciones que puedo aportar en esta comunidad, un clásico de culto y una película con una fuerte carga filosófica que nos puede dejar aturdidos después de visionar la hora y media de película. Sin embargo cabe mencionar que todas las películas de Bergman son así y esta es una reseña que no le hace merito a la gran obra. Este texto busca más bien expresar una opinión en gran medida y la apreciación de una de las mejores obras cinematográficas de todos los tiempos.

I would have never thought about watching this film but after reading what you say and the philosophical take the movie has I got to say I am very intrigued about it.
